Please do not take the negative reviews seriously and pass on this great counseling experience. My wife and I got off track a bit with our marriage and were headed for divorce. I made several phone calls to counselors in the New Haven Area and I only received a return phone call from Dr. Avilas Office. After about a half-dozen sessions, issue were brought to the forefront and immediate corrections were made. My wife and I are very happy again. Dr Avila is an excellent listener. He remained neutral when dealing with my wife and I. He gave excellent advice and supplied us with some new techniques to help strengthen our relationship and marriage. Most-importantly, Dr. Avila is very compassionate and I credit him for helping us save our marriage.

Unfortunately a bad experience. They didn’t get my insurance right. My intake was spent being interrupted on numerous occasions and then discounting what years of therapy and many doctors and licensed psychologists determined was a sound diagnosis after listening and hearing my story and then never called after being told they would set me up for an appointment with one of their therapists. I’ve never experienced such in my 20 years of counseling and would not recommend this practice if you truly need any sort of serious help.

I love this place, it isn’t only so helpful with stress but they take the time to help you strive and do better in your life, I didn’t even plan on going to college not even trying to register, that thought never crossed my mind but during my sessions there all Raul did was speak positivity into my soul and changed my life for the better even went the extra mile to show me the website for a college and taught me how to register and stuff things I had no Idea about and no plans about, on top of it made me feel worth so much more than what I felt about myself, they are all so wonderful there, the staff amongst themselves treat each other like a family and are so genuinely nice. If you want to get put together, if you’ve never felt motivated to do anything, feel like you are down in the dumps and your life isn’t going anywhere I recommend this place to help you change those emotions and life around! I’ve become more proud of who I am thanks to them and feel a new self love for myself. Raul is honestly the most sweetest and helpful person and definitely changed my life for the better.

For over 2 years going through very hard times having liver cancer the whole staff helped me stay positive and fight. After having a successful liver transplant 4 months ago I feel great. I am grateful to Alternative Therapy of Hamden for playing a big part in my success. Raul, M, and Faith have been there for everything.

Do not go here for therapy. The building is dead and sketchy, it feels as though youre the only one there. The therapist I saw seemed to not care about anything that I said, the session never seemed rushed and like they wanted me out of there as soon as possible. He also seemed to talk about himself more than what I needed to talk about and get off my chest. Yes, he was very nice and could be helpful but Im not fully convinced he is a real therapist with experience working with people with mental illness. Additionally, the receptionist didnt let me pick a day that I was most available on because she did not want to be there so late. When I cancelled my appointment, she just said okay and hung up on me, I never got any confirmation that my personal information will be shredded or an apology for their bad service.

Warning: DO NOT GO HERE!!! This place is run down sad excuse for a therapeutic environment. I went here for my daughter to be reunited with her father and it was awful! Sue the “therapist” that my daughter went to is about 20 years past retirement. They played an iSpy memory game with each other in which Sue thought a panda bear was a polar bear, a guy riding a bike was a guy on a motorcycle, and a violin was a guitar and my daughter spent the entire game looking for the wrong things. She’ also repeatedly asked the same questions over and over again because she can’t remeber anything. After being asked the same question for the 100th time I informed her she had already asked me these things and she actually said, “Oh, I haven’t reviewed my notes.” It’s her job to review her notes so she can progress with patients. They would constantly call me while I was at work asking why I didn’t show up to an appointment when they never scheduled one! And then would blame it on me. They are an inadequate, poor excuse for care. When we parted ways they told me they were now billing me for correspondence to my lawyer even though they usually didn’t as a punishment! Someone should take their therapy liscense away. It’s scary that these kind of people are supposed to be helping with such sensitive matters.
