If you or a loved one is experiencing any kind of dementia (or even SUSPECT it), I urge you to contact the Alzheimers Association. The Educational programs they offer helped me to understand the disease and how to be a better caregiver. Attending the Connections activities showed me that I was not alone in dealing with this devastating disease. The support and understanding I received from the staff and from others in the group meetings has been vital to my health - emotional, physical, and mental. And through the Association, I have learned of things I can do to help other families and to find a cure: fundraising; talking to state and federal representatives, and participating in trial studies. Call them now.

As the social worker for The Center for Success in Aging I highly recommend the Greenville office of the Alzheimers Association. They have myriads of programs, events, support groups available not only for the caregiver but also for the person with the diagnosis. Their staff is extraordinarily dedicated and I refer caregivers to them on a regular basis, knowing that it will improve their quality of life. Alzheimers is a stressful journey but one that does not have to be made alone. Call them!

When I first suspected that my mothers memory loss was more than age-related I wanted to educate myself about Alzheimers and other dementias. I found the Alzheimers Association and began attending their support groups and educational programs. That was 8 years ago. My mother was diagnosed and passed away 4 years ago at the age of 95. Since then I have become a support group facilitator. Reach out to the Alzheimers Association...learn from them and participate in the many programs that are offered. You will find that YOU ARE NOT ALONE on this journey.

The Greenville Chapter of the Alzneimer’s Association is a wonderful resource for those who are dealing with dementia whether it is the caregiver or the person living with dementia. My mother is living with dementia and being a caregiver can be a very lonely hard journey but the Alzneimer’s Association provided opportunities to connect with those on the same journey. We can share resources and stories with each other. The program director, Jamie, sets up educational and connection activities each month that are fun and perfect for all of us. I am so very thankful for Jamie and the others who participate in the activities.

My husband has Alzheimer’s and loves the lunch bunch group comprised of those suffering with this disease. It has helped us as a couple to have an open dialogue about what and how he feels and how I can support him better. Jamie Guay is so laid back! She plans alot of activities for this group. There are alot of resources to help all stages of this horrible disease. They are especially sensitive to the needs of the care givers. Jamie never fails to remind us to “take care of ourselves “.

Thee Alzheimers Association is hands down the winner!~ There is something for everyone. Individuals with Alzheimers, Caregivers, and persons seeking information and educational opportunities regarding this terrible disease. Where else could you obtain so much without any cost? A wide array of programs are offered by the Greenville Association. Regular meetings are held at least four times a month for the Alzheimers individual and their caregiver. One such meeting is held at the Up-Country Museum. This event includes a tour of a current exhibit followed by a craft related to the exhibit. All of the events are wonderful opportunities to meet others and discover you are not alone on this journey. At some of the other meetings, we have made stained glass projects, Easter Bonnets, played games, been entertained by great musicians. Other activities include field trips to different places of interest in the Greenville area. What fun and at the same time gaining support and information.Educational programs are provided on a regular basis that cover many topics that will help both the caregiver and the Alzheimers individual.Jamie Guay, the planner, leader of all activities, named this active group Connections. Why Connections? Social interaction is a major factor in slowing down the progression of Alzheimers disease.Respite is another of the associations opportunities. These are only a few of the opportunities available from the Greenville Alzheimers Association. How blessed we are to have this wonderful Greenville Chapter. The staff is so supportive and always willing to help or just listen. This has been most beneficial for me and my husband. I just cannot say enough regarding all that it has done and the wonderful friends I have made and the support given to me.
