I have so many wonderful things to say about Dr. Chris, Raj, and his team! They were so patient with the hundreds of questions I had, and they were able to perform life saving surgery on my puppy for an affordable cost. I am so incredibly grateful for them, and I don’t think I could write a review to do them justice. Thank you so much for taking care of my precious Gnocchi!

My kitty was brought here a few nights ago because she ate a hair tie that was too thick for her to pass without possible obstruction. We originally took her to another ER but they would not help us make an educated decision and basically convinced us to put her under the knife and be opened up to get it out. We found out she may have a heart condition so we opted out and called everywhere to see if there was a less invasive option. After about 5 phone calls, I reached out to CSU and they were so incredibly kind and got us in as soon as we could get there. They hospitalized her overnight and gave us our options, all while being patient and informing us of everything we needed to know. We ended up getting an endoscopy done on her and all went well and she is back to normal and a happy little camper. They were so amazing to both us and our kitty, and we ended up spending far less money here than if we used the other ER (who gave us non urgent care fees which were still $4k estimate). They had a whole team ready to care for her and the front office staff was so patient with me when I was trying to get the financials figured out. Dr. Fukushima was great and helped our sweet girl get the care she needed, along with all of the other staff (whom Ive forgotten their names, but all of them were absolutely amazing).I highly recommend going here if you need surgery or any procedure done on your pet ( if its not incredibly urgent if you are far away). These guys were fantastic. Thank you, CSU team.(Attached a photo of our girl, Eury :) )

Our dog had emergency gall bladder surgery and then lump/lung and now cancer treatment. The cost of the first surgery was equal to just the urgent care place close to my home that didn’t even do a surgery - so was actually pretty happy with their costs. I feel their pricing is very fair for surgery. The doctors have been incredible. The communication efforts incredible. The discussions of quality of life have been reassuring, honest and supportive. The students are top notch. Medical care is incredible.Only complaint is billing. They are always busy and you need to pay before you can leave with your pet. So you get stuck ready to pick up but can’t speak to someone to pay. I could give billing many options that could alleviate this issue. It’s very frustrating.Update: wonderful Anna in billing changed my view!!

The experience I had here at CSU is just unmatched to any experience Ive had with an ER in the past. The compassion and honesty are something I appreciate so much. Dr. Sarah Michalak was one of the best doctors Ive ever had the pleasure of meeting. She made me feel like my opinion mattered and made me feel like I was apart of his treatment plan before deciding anything. Unfortunately, together we did decide humane euthanasia was the best option for my kitty, Milano. Dr. Michalak was so empathetic toward Milano and I, I really just cant thank her and the whole CSU team for making such a difficult time more bearable with the incredible medical care available at CSU along with the compassion given throughout the whole process. Thank you all so much!

Expensive but excellent for 24 hour emergency services. Staff is professional and compassionate and their knowledge base is phenomenal. Also offers a regular daytime clinic that rivals a vet office for fees and convenient appointments. Altho its a bit of a drive for us, we were extremely grateful that we could take our pet here. An amazing resource for the community. Bring your mask, as they are still asking humans to wait outside, and call ahead so they know youre on your way.

They have always done good work on my dogs, warranting 4 stars, but the customer service gets 0 stars. Dealing with this bureaucracy is a Kafka-esque nightmare. Worse than any government agency. Students rotate through positions weekly, meaning you will be answering the same questions endlessly and nobody knows what is going on. They will call you from blocked numbers and leave no way to return a call except through the horrific reception service. Youd be better off with your local vet. The price will be the same and youll get human treatment.

Wednesday night we came home to discover our 13 yo dog had broken his leg. When we brought him in everyone we spoke to was very professional and caring. Dr. Diaz has an incredible bedside manner. When he initially came out to talk to us he walked us through all of our options, we then discussed the health issues our dog had and with recovery what that would mean for his quality of life. We made the very difficult decision to put our boy to sleep. Once we made our choice the staff did what they could to make us comfortable and allowed us to have as much time as we needed. Their compassion was a light in a very dark night.

I would only suggest this place if it’s a SERIOUS emergency. You’re going to pay at least triple of what you would at any other location, will have a large wait time, and it’s going to take much longer than any other place. After my terrible experience I had to go back to get a refund as they charged me for the cremation of my dog…who was well and very much alive upon discharge. The amount of attitude I got from the receptionist was ridiculous for a mistake that was fully on the business. With such a large name these guys should be doing exemplary work, but truly it’s quite the opposite, lazy, uncommunicative, and all around unprofessional service. There are much better places that give you quality service at a much lower price and will refrain from trying to tack on additional unnecessary services during every visit. I’d look elsewhere before considering this place ever again.

CSU vet hospital was great pre-COVID. They saved the life of my sun conure when she almost died from salpingitis in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, they subscribe to the notion that animals arent as important as humans and can therefore be sent in and examined without the owners. Parents would never be expected to wait in the car while their non-verbal children were examined. As a result, information was not conveyed correctly (as evidenced by incorrect documentation and history in the notes I received). Most recently, I drove from Denver when my sun conure was lethargic, losing weight, and not eating (after rapidly becoming blind). I even called first to be sure they thought I should bring her in. And they told me they could refill her antibiotic that was expired and her primary vet told me to restart. When it was clear the technician wasnt understanding the history (and cut me off before I could provide it all), I asked to speak with the vet before she was examined. The response was very rude, Do you want to be seen? If so, this is how it works. And they proceeded to call the on-call exotic vet before I was even allowed to speak to the urgent care vet. They did give her sub-q fluid and told me to follow-up with exotics (in a week or so), while reminding me to be realistic because she is old. They couldnt even draw blood, and they told me an avian vet would have to prescribe the antibiotic. Fortunately, she has a wonderful primary vet, Dr. LaBonde, and she is doing much better now. She is old - she is 26, but that doesnt mean I need to neglect basic care that can improve her quality of life.

Our dog developed a very aggressive brain tumor. Our vet in Salt Lake City said his only chance at life extension was radiation and for that, CSU was the best place. Five days later, we were in Ft Collins and radiation treatment was planned and executed over a ten day period. The vets believe this has probably extended our dogs life 1-2 years. ALL of the vets and techs we met in our ten day stay were highly professional, caring and communicative. Their services arent cheap, but our dog is worth the cost. We are highly impressed by our experience with the CSU vet school

I live in Thornton and called before my husband drove all the way up to Fort Collins to take our Peach Throat Monitor here. They told me before he left that they had exotic vets on-call and if required, they could be at the hospital within 20-minutes. The normal vet would take a look and if needed, consult the exotic and have them come in. After driving there and waiting > an hour for an initial examination, the doctor on-call said there was nothing they could do that evening. They couldnt take x-rays or blood, or administer any medications since their exotic vet wasnt there. They said for $300 they would keep him overnight, and the next day run tests, all-in-all which would run us $1600-1900!!! Unbelievable. We might as well have stayed home and just brought our Monitor to see our normal exotic vet in the morning!! Whats the point of having an emergency exotic vet service if theyll do absolutely nothing to help you, after lying to you on the phone to get you there and spend $160+ for an exam? RIP OFF.

I would like to give a big shout-out and thank you to Dr. Forbes, John Fischer, Dr. Mullens, and the other livestock doctors who worked miracles on our five-month-old piglet. I took my piglet to a vet close to home to get spay, and when we brought her home, she started to throw up what appeared to be fecal matter, was not interested in drinking or eating, which is very unusual. From the moment I called CSU, to the moment I dropped her off, Dr. Mullens stayed in constant communication with me every hour and with every update or turn. Dr. Forbes and her team performed emergency GI Surgery that same night and gave me a call as soon as the surgery was over, which was close to midnight. The team and faculty at CSU are incredible in their knowledge and care with both the patients and family members. Im not convinced that my piglet would be alive today if it werent for the quick actions of the CSU faculty. I cant thank them enough. Each vet, vet student, and vet assistant we have come into contact with here have been amazing- compassionate, well-informed, and willing to answer all of our questions about the care for our animal. When we had to bring our dog to urgent care, even the parking attendants were warm and made us feel better about the experience. The students especially have been so enthusiastic and you can tell they are passionate about their work. The folks here take the time to get to know our nervous dog before bringing him back and I have only ever felt like I am leaving him in capable hands. My only feedback is on the operational side of things. Every time we visit- for routine visits or because our dog is sick/hurt- we have had to provide all of our dog’s information all over again. It would be helpful if there was a way for his chart to be pulled up each time he goes so that we don’t have to re-explain who he is, his medical history, etc.

They said they would call before sedation, they didnt. They said theyd call with an estimate before performing services, they didnt. After a $600 vet bill, my dog received not only a catheter, but a cone that the clinicians couldnt be bothered to put on my pet.He was diagnosed with a skin allergy and given a medication for it, and a narcotic for use before his next vet visit because he was so naughty for us.You require that I give my dog narcotic pain medication an hour before seeing him again. What sort of practice is this? The cone was made of hard plastic. My dogs neck is raw and bleeding from the hot spot. How could you think that a hard plastic cone would be beneficial to scabs and raw skin? My pets regular vet was extremely alarmed by the lack of and quality of care you showed my dog. The fact that you couldnt even put the cone on, leaving us forced to traumatize the dog is utter nonsense. You had the capacity, and chose to sedate him in your visit. Rather than use that time to get the cone on him, you leave it to the owner to traumatize the puppy after the medication wore off.All the talk of well provide you an estimate is completely unprofessional. What if I didnt have those funds available? If you make a commitment in writing with a customer, you should follow it.The entire situation seemed like a very large cash grab, my emergency situation wasnt remedied in any manner, and now my pet is in for another emergency visit for the issue I paid you $600 to handle. How could I ever recommend this place to anyone else?

When we got home (South Dakota) we were called almost daily by Dr. Duerr or a staff member to check on his progress. We were also given a tour of the Hospital, while the Veterinary Medicine field is continually evolving CSU is state of the art in animal care. The day we were there a Surgeon from a human Hospital was visiting to look at the state of the art operation rooms CSU has. He was researching how they could improve the equipment they had at his hospital. The lines between animal care and human care in the Medical Field is narrowing quickly. The second time which was a week ago, our other ferret vomited three times and they tried to get us to do $4,000-$6,000 exploratory surgery or to have us euthanize him. Went to his regular vet a week later and they said he is okay- not nearly ready to be euthanized. I took my animal here for a few different concerns that our normal vet could not test for. The wait for an appointment was over a month, but they ended up squeezing us in sooner after adding me to a cancellation list. After telling me some differential diagnoses and explaining how to test for them, I agreed to the costs. The doctor and her student told me we would have all the results minus the culture by the end of the day. My animal was there from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm, and we had 1 result, which was just a radiograph. I was told we would get updates after each test, and we got none at all. I had to call them at 4:00 (because that’s when she was supposed to be done) to get the first update. In all of this time, I got to speak to our doctor 1 time. The rest was through her med student, who was great, however obviously did not have much to tell us as he is a student. I paid the $840 bill and took my animal home. A few days went by with no call about her blood work or culture (culture to be expected as they quoted me 3-5 days) so I called. The doctor was unavailable so they had to send her a message. She called me later in the day to tell me her diagnosis, which can be severe in other cases but not in my animal’s. She prescribed IM antibiotics and allowed me to have them shipped to me so I didn’t miss anymore work due to their business hours. Several more days passed after that before I got a call to pay for the antibiotics. I paid and confirmed my address. I got a facebook message today from someone who said they had my package with my name but her address on it. We compared addresses and they are not similar in any way except for the same city. I now have to drive to pick them up from her house, and am hoping they weren’t sitting out all day since they need to be frozen. I would not bring my animal to this hospital again.

This place is a world-class veterinary hospital. There are maybe only a couple institutions like this in the United States. The doctors and their staff moved very quickly from the moment we dropped our sick cat off after we transferred her via referral from a smaller animal hospital which was underequipped to make a diagnosis. The facility itself appears like it could be hospital for a small city in its own right.Diagnostic work was impressive and included full metabolic lab tests and ultrasound imaging. She had to have emergency surgery and doctors were excellent about explaining their plans/reasoning along with the potential risks and complications. The team leadership included a staff veterinarian, a CSU faculty vet, and a Veterinary student who contacted us every few hours with an update. We were required to pay a deposit which was a supermajority of the final total. I am personally grateful we did not have to discuss the financial implications much because we were able to cover the costs. I understand others complaints However I feel like the hospital has to have a strict protocol in order to succeed as such a technically advanced organization especially so that people can be treated in an equitable way each time.As someone who has seen many bills for other veterinary surgery in the past, the pricing was competitive with smaller, lesser equipped facilities which was a pleasant surprise. All of this happened on July 5th; a federal holiday. They saved my little two-year-old cat from what seemed like a hopeless situation. If you live in Colorado then this is easily the best in the state.

I had given her an oatmeal bath, checked for fleas, ticks, etc. Gave her chlorphenaramine (antihistamine) to help with the itch. Nothing helped. So went to urgent care at CSU because I was concerned about exposure to something harmful, a thyroid issue, etc. They are still on curbside assistance due to Covid, so I dropped her off. She spent three hours there, I got a bill for $168, and a note later in the day via email that no one in dermatology was available to look at her. So they suggested I find ANOTHER dermatologist online at a DIFFERENT facility and have someone look at her. OMG!! Seriously? Took you 3 hours to say you didnt have anyone to help her?? A GENERAL practice vet couldnt give an opinion, and possibly suggest another med to help calm her down, or run some blood work???? Shes absolutely in agony tonight. Cant sleep. My dog is sicker than ever because of the diet they provided AND they will not set up another reevaluation appointment for a month AND they are asking for another $300 to fix the issue they created in the first place!! You will never speak to an actual veterinarian unless you pay a hefty fee and they do not offer advice on veterinary referrals. I am truly heartbroken I put my faith and money into a program I thought I could trust, especially with something as important as the health of my dog. Where do I turn to now? We can not say enough about CSU VTH and their team. What an amazing animal hospital. From the minute we came in with our dog for her consult we received the highest level of care and compassion. Its like the Mayo Clinic for animals. Initially we were provided with our options from two different departments and we chose a lengthy treatment (approx. 1 month with treatments every weekday). As we live 5 hours from Fort Collins - not only did we need cost-effective local options (which they had in place!), we needed to have care in place for our dog when we couldnt be with her. After our initial consult we had multiple vet techs offer to care for our dog and welcome her into their home during portions of her treatment. The tech who cared for her has become like family to us - we are forever grateful! On her last day of treatment it was like a party for her - as we walked down the hallway everyone knew her - even departments she had nothing to do with! The care, kindness and love for not only what they do, but the animals was amazing. They were readily available to answer questions before, during and after treatment and continue to touch base with us which is so appreciated. We cant wait to see everyone at her follow-up visit. For future care we cant get through our regular vet - there is no doubt that we would make the trip to CSU VTH for any of our animals - large or small. Tahnk you from the bottom of our hearts!

I was really impressed with CSU and the time they took to understand our goals, evaluate our pup and explain/discuss the options with us. Our 4th year student was incredibly kind and patient with us, as well as the Dr. taking plenty of time to come out and chat with us to explain our puppys hip dysplasia and what different options we might need. I feel like we got great value out of our visit and I was super appreciative of their entire proccess.

They labeled our senior cat as Fractious on the first visit and sent us home to sedate him and try again another date. We did sedate him and brought him back on another day. He just needed shots and blood work, and treatment for ear mites. They gave him shots and told me that they would need to give him anesthesia to draw blood. Told me he looked fine and really wasnt necessary but if I wanted to get his blood work done that is what they would need to do, and it would be a minimum of $450 to do so. They never even looked at his ears. So 2 visits and $165 later, he got a few shots. They talk about how important the handling a fractious pet is on their website. That it is one of the most crucial aspects to being a good veterinarian. A pet that is Fractious is more likely to go untreated as the pets parent grows frustrated with the vet and will not return for treatments. CSU Veterinary is a TEACHING HOSPITAL. Guess they are not teaching their students this important piece.

I have an 8 year old Chinese water dragon. I was referred to CSU from his primary vet for a partial tail amputation due to tail rot and slight oral inflammation and teeth cleaning. We scheduled his appointment for 11 am on the 1st of April, get there 15 minutes early like told, fill his paperwork out and are told that his team would be with us in about 10 minutes. Well..we sat in the parking lot for over an hour...no-one showed up. I called the receptionist and she puts me on hold to go talk to the exotics department. Lo and behold they forgot about us...blamed it on a communication error between pagers ....ummm okay its 2021..theres plenty of other communication equipment you could have used...like a cell phone, but beside the point. Well she comes back and says..the doctor will be right out.Another 10 minutes passes by and nobody..We ended up leaving without even being seen. I highly suggest people not take thier small exotics to this place...as you may end up forgotten. Also if they have this issue before any processes start.what kind of issues actually take place after youve signed your pet over to them...

When I moved to Ft. Collins I was looking forward to finding a small animal internist at CSU to help my 6-year old kitty. I had a great experience with large animal and I thought I couldnt go wrong with small animal. Unfortunately my experience with small animal was entirely different and entirely terrible.1. Receptionist is in the wrong line of work: When I called to make my first appointment, she told me that Id have to wait 6-8 weeks. I asked if there was a way to squeeze us in earlier. Instead of politely telling me that it wasnt possible, she told me I should go somewhere else if I needed something sooner. Its hard to convey her tone in writing so youll have to trust that it was rude.2. Forgotten about in the parking lot … twice: I waited ½ hr in the parking lot with a terrified kitty before I had to remind them I was there. It was another ½ hr before they came to get him. They said it was a communication mix-up. Sadly, this also happened with an urgent care visit. I guess we don’t share the same definition of ‘Urgent’.3. Communication not a strength: Our internist was incommunicado half the time. Sometimes he would respond to calls/emails within a couple of days. Other times he wouldn’t respond at all. I’m still waiting for urgent care to return a message that I left in October.4. Dont worry about it: On Feb 15 my kitty saw our regular vet for what we thought was pancreatitis. The evening of Feb 18 he took a turn so we went to urgent care. The doc did an exam and ultrasound that required sedation. She said she didnt see anything extraordinary and discharged him at 7PM. When we got home he wasnt looking right. By 11:30 PM there was no improvement AND he had become incontinent. I called and asked if I should bring him back. They told me not to worry and suggested it was the sedation he had 6-7 hours prior.5. Dead cat. On Feb 19 at 7:00 AM I awoke to the sound of my kitty SCREAMING in pain. I rushed him to Ft. Collins ER/Rehab but he was DOA. They said he probably threw a blood clot. I do NOT fault CSU for failing to detect the clot. What I DO have a problem with is dismissing his condition when I called the night prior.6. Salt in the wound: Clinical staff wont call you but Billing has your digits. They called a couple of days after my kitty died to collect the balance of what I owed. I thought I had paid that bill in-full. No one told me that they didnt include the charges for the ultrasound. I have no objection to paying what I owe but this call was rubbing salt in a painful wound. She said she would inform the clinical staff of my cats passing. Apparently she didnt as earlier this month I received an email reminder for a follow-up appointment. Let’s chalk it up to a ‘communication mix-up’? Or maybe, CSU just likes to be reminded of things … like patients waiting in parking lots or, dead cats.7. Sorry-not-Sorry: I received a sympathy card from Ft. Collins ER/Rehab. I received a sympathy card from my primary care vet. And from CSU? I just received the aforementioned slaps in the face. When my kitty was alive, I made excuses for CSU. I assumed that these lapses were attributable to COVID related challenges. But there’s absolutely NO excuse for the way we were treated. Our primary care vet and Ft. Collins ER/Rehab are ALSO experiencing COVID related challenges and they were able to treat us with respect and compassion without compromising their level-of-service.I am all for CSU charging market price for their services – it’s fair for EVERYONE. But I also would expect them to operate with the same level of professionalism as a private clinic. Perhaps they don’t feel like they need to since there’s such demand for their specialized services and world-class docs. I can say this; I would take a kind, compassionate, service-oriented, mediocre vet over CSU’s nonsense any day of the week. I should have done exactly what that rude receptionist suggested and taken my kitty elsewhere. He might be alive today if I had.

We were quoted $2500-$3500 for our puppies surgery. I set up the appointment and they had me fill out the registration paperwork. No other communication was ever made prior to the appointment/surgery. Nothing of what to expect , no mention of payment methods (they don’t except cash) (later to find out they do take cash and the person helping us didn’t know what she was talking about) covid procedures, etc. The day of pre-op they tell us we owe over $1000 more then what was quoted. I had set up to have our puppy boarded there the night before due to traveling there from a long distance away, they stated they didn’t know if they had room for him. We waited there for a three and a half hour appointment just to only get a phone call back instead of anyone coming out to talk to us. There was no need for us to stay three and a half hours. Nobody seem to have answers to anything. I’m thankful at this point the surgery was a success however they are very lacking in customer service and the accuracy of estimates/billing. Not to mention a total disregard for people’s time and travel.

Long story short, my experience here started great and ended terribly with me having to put my dog down after going through a straight forward surgery that he may not have actually needed. The pre-examinations werent done thoroughly or properly, so my dog went through a complicated and expensive spinal surgery, which he never recovered from neurologically (he had been presenting neuro issues for months and months and I dont feel as if anyone actually was listening to me). When I voiced what was going on with him post-op, I pretty much got a lot of shrugs and really no help trying to figure out what was going on - I didnt sleep for a week, nor did my dog, as he was waking up every half hour or so crying/yelping/howling. So appx $10k later, I took him to Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital where they were much more supportive, cheaper, and professional - they agreed that CSU did not go the proper route with my dog and things could have been different (and I wouldnt be in the hole thousands and thousands of dollars with still no real answers). Just go to Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital if youre in the area.

She is seen in the Internal Medicine Department and has also been to the Emergency Care department. She has always received excellent care. Her doctor, Dr. Siu is very attentive, compassionate and open to suggestions and many, never-ending questions ( I am a very devoted and curious dog-mom). STAY AWAY FROM CSU. Our dog had a TPLO surgery here and it was a mess. She had bowel incontinence for days afterwards and Dr Goh and Dr Au Yong couldn’t care less. They told us this happens sometimes and to gently wash her with a wash cloth. Our dog is super fluffy and was having incontinent diarrhea twice an hour for 1-2 days. So their advice was laughable. Our dog was collapsing while we cleaned her as they advised. They then just stopped returning our calls for a few days. Thankfully we found a home vet to talk to who graciously helped us and reinforced our concerns of a skin infection. He told us to come in for a sedated cleaning asap which we did and our dog had a skin infection. We were better at diagnosing our dog than the vets at CSU who told us not to worry and they’d do a full cleaning 2 weeks later.Let’s just say every single interaction we had with CSU post-surgery was a massive waste of time. They were contradictory about her condition and treatment after her 2 week appointment. They seem completely lacking in education and empathy. It honestly was strange. Due to their bizarre behavior and lack of professionalism, we had to call our new home vet after every single call-of which there were many-so he could tell us what was actually going on.We are shocked and dismayed at the extreme and seemingly accepted lack of empathy and professionalism of virtually every person we spoke with at CSU.Never send your animal here. We still feel extreme guilt for putting our dog through all this trauma and neglect despite us research for weeks. We have no idea why CSU is ranked so highly. There is never a reason for an animal to be treated this way. Don’t do to your dog what we did to ours. Stay away from CSU.

We recently brought our 6 month old puppy in to have a mass removed by her heart. We were referred to CSU by a cardiologist in Denver because it was over Christmas break when we almost lost our pup and there was no availability or resources in Colo Springs/Denver during this time. This is a teaching hospital which I personally think gives it a very unique feel because of the variety of profesional perspectives. Upon arrival we were assigned a 4th year student (Garrett C.), Veterinarian (Dr. Gagnon) and the cardiac surgeon (Dr. Orton). We met with all 3 at different points throughout our pre-operative appointment. I cannot say enough about how thorough, patient and kind they were during our pups appointments & surgery. Dr. Gagnon & Garrett C. took so much time making sure all of our questions were answered and explained the process, diagnosis and procedure more than they had to -- and this we appreciated immensely. Their followup after surgery was great as well, we emailed a question and received an answer very quickly. We live in Colorado Springs but will be making the drive up to Ft Collins when needed because of the care they exhibited to us and our pup. Completely unimpressed. We brought our dog into the emergency clinic after our dog was hit by a car. They required several thousand dollars down to even be seen and then informed us that putting him down would likely be the best decision. I had to interrupt the vet to ask how my dog was doing because he just kept spewing off how much everything was going to cost without giving me any update as to how he was doing. They said I would be issued a credit from the deposit I made since they didnt perform all of the services and they have yet to contact me about it. They also didnt give the cremation place our updated contact information, so we had to contact the place to find out if our dog had already been cremated or not. Overall, the horrible situation was made worse by bad bedside manner and terrible communication.

Our pup Dexter was having horrific skin issues: itching and getting bumps on his back that eventually started to ulcerate. We saw our local vet multiple times over 6 months to try to figure out the problem and they were at a loss for how to handle it. They put him on antibiotics and steroids, told us to start a diet of hydrolyzed protein only, and did skin biopsies. We did everything they told us and nothing helped. We found the dermatology department at CSU Vet Teaching Hospital and made an appointment. We saw Dr. Callum Bennie and within two weeks Dexters skin had cleared up. Our local vet had not done the appropriate elimination diet for Dexter and he was still having reactions to something in his food. Now he is off all his medications and doing incredibly well! We have learned he is allergic to chicken and he could possibly be allergic to other things as well. Dr. Bennie did a great job of setting us up to deal with his allergies for the rest of his life. He is an incredible vet; great with Dexter and explained everything perfectly for me. The vet students working with us were always professional and helpful. Highly recommend this place!

This is one of if not the best vet care for your pet that you can get. Period. Compassionate, world class vets with the most advanced tools. Things to be aware of is that communication can be difficult and appointments can take a long time. This is due to it being a teaching hospital and not a standard clinic. Normally you drop your pet off with a student and then wait for them to get back to you. Communication is done with the student and due to rounds and such it can be difficult to contact them and phone tag may result. You wont get a direct phone number, but the main desk to page them. And sometimes the wait can be really long. An appointment you expect to take an hour or so can take all day. This, from my understanding, is that emergency cases take priority and that it is a teaching hospital and a vet and student work together on your pet. Dont worry, your pet is still receiving the best care possible and if an emergency the will address it. Also, no news is good news as they will contact you if an emergency arises. I mention it so that new visitors can be prepared for this as it is a bit different from a standard vet clinic. Again, they are awesome and can do amazing things for you loved one.

My husband and I used to love this hospital, the urgent car department had been amazing with both our dog and cat, but our dog was having issues and was sent to neurology, the neurology resident that took care of her (from the start) was cold, unwilling to answer questions, misleading in the information she gave and then was not available when she said she would be or another doctor would be.This lead to us calling the front desk and asking to speak to any doctor that could give us info about our dog and they told us we weren’t allowed to talk to anyone, but that doctor. At this point, we demanded to talk to a doctor or we would call the director of the hospital, because we were not having crucial questions answered. This happened twice. After we got our dog home, we filed a formal complaint. We asked them to only call my husband’s number and ignored that request. The. We wrote two different documents, one pointing out that, in a letter to us explaining how they were in the right, the head of neurology completely lies about the reason and time frame that they ran tests on our dog. We had a time stamp on the records showing she lied. The only response we received after calling out this lie was a letter telling us we were rude on the phone to doctors and administration and to never bring our animals back again. In the end, the resident neurologist who was so set that our dog was just “gonna die,” never considered a neuromuscular condition that is apparently VERY common in Labradors. But we found that info out through UC Davis Vet School. We were warned by a vet student and a community member to NEVER bring our animals to this hospital, but since we are both affiliated with the university, we wanted to support our community. This is unprofessional and downright disgusting. We have been going there for years and had never been treated so badly, only to have it blamed on us, after it was clear they lied about reasons for procedures and the time frame those procedures were performed.I support CSU, but I urge anyone to reconsider taking your animals to the vet hospital if it means having to deal with anyone in neurology.
