There should be one of these in EVERY neighborhood in the whole city. Actually, in every neighborhood in the whole world. Not kidding. When it comes to SUSTAINABLE and CYCLICAL and LOCAL, it doesnt get more real than the Plant Chicago. Go and check it out!

Worth the trip. I had heard they were much farther along in their goals of sustainability and zero waste than they really are, but theyre definitely making progress towards it. The tour was informative and the food vendors inside were all delicious and knowledgeable about The Plant.

One of my favorite non profit organizations in Chicago. They focus on sustainability and waste reducing. Do me a favor and check out their new place which is an old firehouse that they are renovating and its starting to look amazing. They also hold a farmers market over the summer in a park just across the street from them.

Wonderful space with so much going on. The farmers market had a great variety of things, many of which were made on site by different vendors. The work they’re doing about closed loop systems is very cool, and it’s great to be able to see some of those things in the different spaces around the building. The bar area is also awesome, very good beer selection and incredibly fresh and delicious pizza.

I absolutely love this place. I have done some volunteering here over the winter. I wish I had time to volunteer more. If you are into Green Tech, Sustainability, Agriculture, Closed Loop systems and farmers markets, you should make time for a visit. They have farmers markets once a month on Saturdays and tours most weekends.

A ten-year project at the very least. Do not be fooled by appearances: many good things take time, blood, sweat and tears - and this project has plenty of that, both in the past and present. Come here to learn more about Chicagos self-sustainability aspirations.

I love the purpose and thoughtfulness that goes into the selection of organizations in this building. The closed loop philosophy inspires thinking ahead when planning endeavors. For example the yeast expelled from making beer in this facility is used to bake bread in the bakery, and the waste from shrimp is used to fertilize the plants in the tank. This makes one realize that when you create a business, its important to think about your waste stream and how to mitigate it.The products here are also top notch: the coffee is excellent and the beer is delectable. The farmers market is the busiest time with the most opportunities for engaging with the myriad of offerings and seeing new and interesting things. This place rocks.

This is a great place to tour and to look forward to being a patron to in the future. Bring friends, be hip, drink beer, buy produce, and be in the loop by visiting this community model of a sustainable closed-loop system. It uses its tenants waste to recycle and regenerate energy to operate and feed into the grid. Learn about aquaponics (raising fish alongside/under plants), growing mushrooms (soon to come), worm culture, etc. Vendors and tenants include and offer, crafts, food, spices, grow lights, farmers market, and a rockin brewery with tables (jammed on Saturday with a good vibe). Tour is informative for adults and children. Cool to hear about the prior use of the building as a meat processing plant.

Very worthy mission. Had a chance to go to the 2nd annual food truck rally. Did expect a few more trucks but the real event was the tour of the plant. First time ive seen the vertical indoor farm. Would be great to see it expand. Also bought a jar of honey from Bike-A-Bee. It is the best local honey Ive had.

Check your expectations at the door - they advertise as a vertical garden which most would picture as a wall of horticulture. In reality it is vertical entrepenuership in an old meat packing plant in the back of the yards area. Go for a work day and get ready to get dirty and happily exhausted. Bring your work clothes! Also stay all day and they treat you to a lunch from a nearby mexican taco shoppe. There are fish and plant culture, brick oven bakery, gardening, etc. - and lots of vision for a brewery anchor in the future - is it always in the future.
