By far the best experiences I’ve ever had visiting a doctor’s office. Reception is always clear and friendly. I never feel like I’m being rushed when visiting the doctors or students. And they did an amazing job making me feel comfortable with getting hearing aids. Do yourself a favor and make the trip to UNC.

I had been going to a wonderful ENT in Raleigh for my hearing aids. This practice went to only disposable aids and that just wasn’t for me. I went to UNC Hearing and Communication Center for new aids. I was very impressed with the evaluation of my hearing issues, as as well as the careful consideration of the best hearing instrument for me. I was helped every step of the way with fitting and use of the accessories. The staff was very compassionate. I highly recommend this practice.

So grateful for Caitlyn Whitson, Au.D. ! She has been managing my (now) 95 year old mothers audiology needs for the last few years. She is very knowledgeable and has a real gift in communicating with the elderly. My mom has a real hearing deficit, yet Caitlyn was able to step her through a new hearing assessment and fit her with the perfect pair of hearing aids. She asked us what we really wanted in a pair of hearing aids and worked hard to find the perfect pair to fit our needs exactly. In addition, she has helped me understand communication strategies that I have adopted in my moms care. I highly recommend Caitlyn - especially for the elderly!

I received my hearing loss diagnosis at age 8. I’m 29 now and have had hearing aids since I was 14. Over the years, I’ve seen dozens of audiologists because of the different cities I’ve lived in. Never have I encountered such a effective, professional, intelligent, supportive, organized audiology clinic in my life. My audiologists, Anne Marie and Dr. Johnson, distilled all the information about my hearing loss to me in easy to understand bites. She supported my lifestyle. She responded to my concerns and my hearing problems, always with a solution. I recommend UNC Hearing and Communication without qualification. This place is the bee’s knees.

Im writing to you at the request of my mother, a 76-year old patient of yours. She asked me share her heartfelt appreciation to everyone at UNC Hearing & Communication Center. She has experienced severe hearing loss for about 20 years and during that time, relied on a retail hearing loss company for the selection of and maintenance of her hearing aids. After struggling with outrageous costs and a lack of dedicated medically-based hearing loss professions, she decided to explore a different experience and was recommended to UNC Hearing & Communication Center by a dear friend. It has made a PROFOUNDLY positive difference in her life! Your experienced and compassionate staff thoughtfully assisted my mother in the entire process from assessment to fitting of new hearing devices. Our entire family cant thank you all enough! We wanted to remark that your dedication to helping my mother is especially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic since we rely more heavily on telephone communication. We struggled to understand one another before but can now have conversations on the phone again. With heartfelt gratitude, Geraldine S. and her entire family

I love coming here. Why? First, I prepare because I want to get my money’s worth. I’m an old New England cheapskate. They (I see Dr. Johnson), patiently and with good spirit and professionalismanswer all my questions until I have no more. I get the feeling that these folks have their patient’s best interests at heart. I’m excited about my new hearing aids that are blue tooth capable so I can listen to podcasts, phone calls, Zoom sessions, basically anything on my phone or computer. The fidelity for streaming music, etc. I’m finished with my 45 day service period that was part of the original purchase but feel fully comfortable with these devices and my hearing is much improved. Just ask my wife! One last thing, they are very on top of Covid safety. I felt quite safe during my appointments.

I have been with this group for a 6-7 years. Over that time I have seen several of the audiologists, and all have been excellent. My daughter and grandson have also had an excellent experience. They are the UNC hearing specialists on the south side of Highway 54 and are the group who train the next generation of audiologists in their PhD program. Along with the senior audiologist, you may also be seen by one of these students. Based on my medical school experience teaching residents, this enhances the quality of care.

I cannot imagine a better facility for hearing evaluations and obtaining hearing aids than the UNC Hearing & Communication Center. Their staff is outstanding. The thoroughness of their hearing assessment and adjustment of the hearing aids to compensate for my hearing loss was extraordinary . It was also reassuring to know that the hearing aids they recommended were sold at cost. There was no incentive to provide more expensive hearing aids that I didnt need. Their follow up service has been equally outstanding. Definitely 5 Stars.

I have a long history of hearing problems that have progressed to include a balance problem and a need for hearing aids. I have shopped around for the best audiologist for me. Dr Patricia Johnson and her 4th year student have met my high expectations. I was asked to complete forms asking what I wanted to achieve with hearing aids. The best part about this organization is that they will program your hearing aid to work with an in-ear device. It makes a big difference. The worst part is that they are very controlling about everything. Although nice, Dr. Sjobald insisted on her choice of hearing aids becuase she knew best. They werent a bad choice, but the idea of the patient choosing was too novel for her to accept. It was worse with insurance. They didnt understand the issue and wouldnt listen to me. As a result, it took me three months of phone calls to resolve something that should have taken a weak.

Dr. Johnson was helpful, knowledgeable, and personable. The hearing aids and ancillary equipment were checked out thoroughly before the sale. My needs were satisfied and hearing improved. The diagnostic equipment for evaluating my hearing was very good. The processes for using the equipment were gone through thoroughly, with my full participation. An auxiliary piece of equipment that would not integrate with my home theater system was returned without any difficulty. The front office staff were friendly and helpful as well. The office is near the entrance on the first floor, so theres no access problem. Lastly, there werent lengthy waits for appointments at the time I was scheduling with the center.

I found this center through their excellent website. I was fitted with my first set of hearing aids about one month ago. Through the evaluation and fitting, I worked with 3 different audiologists. All were knowledgeable and professional. Everything about the center was designed to help the patient deal with their hearing issues. One small example - when a coordinator leaves a message to remind you of an appointment, the message is clear, enunciated distinctly and is not rushed. The hearing aids have helped me to hear better and I have learned a reasonable amount about my hearing in the process.

Ive met with audiologists in Salisbury, Charlotte, Burlington, Raleigh, and Chapel HIll since my hearing began to decrease in my teens; this has been the best by far. Nancy McKenna is knowledgeable and friendly, and gave me the most thorough hearing test and analysis I have seen yet. Most importantly, she was clear about the cost of different types of hearing aids so that I could weigh my choices. After receiving them, she took as long as needed to adjust and calibrate them properly before I left--something many hearing aid dealers skip almost entirely. She helped me to finally obtain a caption call phone as well, which has been life changing!

I donated the second of a set of $4,000.00 hearing aids to a hearing clinic. My hope was that they could re-program those for someone who could use them and was more tolerant of increased background noise than I. That was 8 years ago. It recently became clear that I could no longer escape hearing aids if I wanted to remain part of the conversa-tion. After consulting with friends, I took the plunge and went to the UNC Hearing & Communication Center for an audiology workup and a recommendation. The upshot, I now wear a brand new pair of expensive hearing aids. But.what a difference; they produce sound that is so realistic and so clear that I am thrilled with how much easier it is for me to participate in a conversation. Those 8 years have made a miraculous difference in all aspects of the technology. And Dr. Johnson knows what she is doing!

I chose to go to UNC because I wanted an experience untainted by commercial considerations or sales pitches. I am totally satisfied with my complete process - from the initial audio gram screening to the prescription recommended by Dr. Sharon Johnson. Incidentally, that recommendation was NOT for the most expensive aids. I am doing very well with my mid-level aids and have found that they are comfortable to wear all day from post-shower until bedtime. I’ve had no problems with the adjustment to using hearing aids probably because I went quite early in my hearing loss. I recommend that anyone whose family or friends have mentioned the need for assessment do that at once. And I would recommend UNC for that.

I was very impressed with the personal attention and expert clinical care from UNC Hearing and Communication. Dr Johnson is a warm and caring individual who ensures that you have the right device for your needs and provides the right encouragement for difficult patients such as myself. I knew that i had a hearing problem but never thought that i could get used to wearing a hearing aid. I was also held back by the cost and sales practices of some of the for-profit hearing centers.I had heard good things about these folks and was very pleased with my experience. It is a small office without the impersonal feel of other offices at UNC. Staff is very attentive and helpful - all appointments are made through their office and they are always easy to reach by phone.I wont go into the pricing model but it is much more transparent than other hearing centers and appears to be lower cost.If you do decide to make an appointment be aware that there are two hearing practices at UNC - this is UNC Hearing and Communication and is part of the Department of Medicine. The other is UNC Audiology and is part of UNC Health Care.Take my advice and stick with UNC Hearing and Communication.

My 90-year-old mothers hearing had changed over the past year and her old hearing aids simply werent working very well anymore. We talked about going to the UNC Hearing and Communication Center to see if newer hearing aids could help her, but mom was very skeptical that getting new hearing aids would really help. Long story short: Dr. Sjoblad and her grad students fitted mom with a new set of hearing aids that have really improved moms life. She can hear her son on the phone; she can understand what is said while at the bridge table; and she is constantly telling me to speak more softly (something I havent done in years because shouting was the only way she could hear me!). Dr. Sjoblad is patient and compassionate; her demeanor always calms my mom down; she listens carefully to mom’s concerns and comes up with creative solutions to solve problems; and she is happy to take the time to fine tune mom’s hearing aids so mom can get the most out of them. I am very pleased by the care Dr. Sjoblad and graduate student, Aneesh, provided. Dr. Sjoblad carefully assessed my hearing loss, offered me options for appropriate hearing aids at different price points, and worked with me over several appointments to ensure that my new aids were a good fit and had good functionality for my needs. I had my prior hearing aids (my first) for almost five years and had almost stopped using them because I felt they did so little good. But with my new hearing aids, I can now hear in restaurants, in the car, and in meetings. I can even hear the birds singing in the morning when I walk the dogs.! This is such a wonderful change, and has made me much happier, and also more confident in social situations. I appreciate the time Dr. Sjoblad and Aneesh took to review the situations that were giving me trouble, and working specifically to address those. They are patient and kind, and keep up with the latest in research and technology, as fits with a clinic whose audiologists are also teachers (professors) in the field. Aneesh also offered an excellent free workshop on hearing loss and hearing tips. I am most grateful for their help.
