Ive been going to Balcones Pain Clinic monthly for several years. Dr. Khan, the nurses, and their administrative staff have always been kind and attentive to my needs and concerns. Dr. Khan also provides nerve abrasions and cortisone shots that have significantly improved my quality of life.I appreciate that they have a small office locally and are easy to access any time I need them.

I saw Dr. Kahn at Balcones Pain Consultants for my second visit this morning. My appointment was scheduled at 8:00 a.m. I had to wait for 45 minutes to be taken into a room because a new patient was taken before me. My first appointment lasted less than 15 minutes, my second less than 10, after waiting 45 minutes to be seen. I was informed at the visits that pain management was interventional in nature, that pain medication doesnt work for patients with spinal stenosis and that injections were my best option. I wish to impart that I not only have spinal stenosis, I have cervical and lumbar spine disc herniations, spondylolisthesis of L4 on L5 and a bone spur at L5. I called the only facility that Balcones Pain Consultants uses and was informed that my first injection visit would cost > $700 and my second visit would be close to $200; they dont accept Care Credit, all of the balance must be paid up front and they dont offer a payment plan. I have an 83 year old husband with bone marrow cancer, I have been a Nurse since 1985 and work at home (at 61, it is a great health risk for me and my Husband for me to work outside of my home). Not only this, I have weaned myself off of fentanyl patches, lowered my pain medication dose and am now down to 1 anti-spasmotic medication daily. I dont think its too much to ask that pain medication continues to be offered without making the patient feel like all the provider wants to do is spend money I dont have for procedures I dont want to have. Needless to say, I am helpless to do anything else but to take money out of my dwindling 401K in order to pay for something other than pain medication which Im not abusing.

Unfortunately Im seeing why the reviews are so low for this clinic. I was referred to Dr. Ray Ximinez this month (January 2021) and he seemed kind and like he listened but his notes for my sessions had a lot of things that werent correct or outright wrong (things that we hadnt discussed but it said we did or that my pain was 50% resolved from my current medications when it ISNT and thats the whole reason I went to him in the first place!). I sent him a message in the patient portal regarding this but is has yet to be answered a week later. Someone from his office did call me eventually a few days ago but when I went to call them back and press the correct options I was put on hold and then hung up on without anyone saying a word to me (twice). This is reminding me of my recent experience with Urology Austin....no one actually picking up the phone most of the time on the other end to actually you know, communicate.

When I first came to Balcones Pain Consultants I had high hopes but it was dashed in the first week. I wasnt offered a long acting pain med because Dr. Kahn stated that there was a study that shows long acting pain meds do not work. Now I know better then that. Ive had to take long acting pain meds by themselves and they improved my quality of life greatly. On one visit I was told that if I didnt have more insurance that he couldnt justify giving me any more pain meds at all. He was very abrasive and rude. What that amounted to in other words is, if I dont get the expensive procedures done to make them money, they were going to stop my meds completely. That was illegal of him. Ive never seen more unprofessional, unkind and opinionated care. I do not recommend Balcones. You wont get a long acting. You will be treated as a malingerer.

Awful place, they are not accommodating to their patients who are in pain. The office staff is Very rude and unprofessional. The dr was nice, but most of the time is spent dealing with the bad staff. They do not forward records, they do no make requests for records (even during Covid) and are not understanding to the patients that are in pain. There is a recurring theme of unreturned phone calls, not scheduling appointments timely, not following up, long call wait times (15 min), and an air of entitlement. The office staff are not sympathetic to your pain. You are a nuisance and need to go away. No smiles, no empathy.I would Never recommend them if you are in pain.

Its a shame, that what most likely is a team of very talented and professional physicians, is not represented by clerical and administrative staff of equal talent and professionalism. My experiences with those at the front desk, and over the phone, have been most unpleasant. The warmth and personality of a paperclip comes to mind. A provided list of medications and their respective dosages was inaccurately recorded. It took four days for a prescription to be called in to my pharmacy, and the individual responsible for calling in the prescription lied about when she had actually gotten around to calling it in. By my count, thats four strikes.

So I’m not one to do this but I have been thoroughly frustrated with Dr. Kahn in particular. The staff is great don’t get me wrong, the staff at the surgery center are even amazing. I am a very sickly person and have been to many doctors and specialists. I’m all for a “to the point doctor” I actually prefer it. I’m not sensitive and you don’t have to give me exceptional bed side manner. But as soon as Dr. Kahn knew I had anxiety issues he made it seem like it’s totally in my head. Yes I have fibromyalgia and I know when I’m escalating my symptoms with anxiety. I have been doing this for a long time and have kept myself in check when I feel myself doing that. Anyways, When I was at the surgery center for my injections you have to fast 6 hours before if you get sedation. My appointment was at 3:40 and by that point I had a killer migraine. The staff there were so sweet before I left they knew I had a long drive from south Austin to Leander and I told them I was extremely nauseous. The anesthesiologists asked doc if he could give me something for nausea and my headache before I left, Dr. Kahn responded with “Shes not going to die from a migraine.” I just couldn’t believe that he said that right in front of me? I have been dealing with this pain for a long time along with my numerous chronic illnesses I have had since I was 12. I mean my last resort was pain management at 29..... So I have got my injections and they have been helping coupled with my pain meds. Even though that’s been helping he has decided that I don’t need pain meds even though I am in pain without them. 🤷‍♀️ Needless to say I am not going back. I think he is a very rude doctor and does not listen to what people have to say. He forms his own opinion while he’s ignoring you talk. It’s very unfortunate because the staff was great. I hate making bad reviews. Yes I understand the opioid epidemic I really do, but I don’t understand if something is working for a patient why you would discontinue what was working when it had purpose to be prescribed in the first place. I wasn’t Asking for refills before they were due and I had the medication In my system?! 🤷‍♀️ Well that’s my 2 cents, I hope this helps. 👊🏻

TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE pain management!! If you want to be treated like a drug addict 8 days after major neck surgery, this place is for you!! My wife was sent here. The first visit they took an urine analysis and filled out paper work. They gave her a pain reliever and muscle relaxer. They set her next appointment for just 14 days later. The second visit still had ZERO information from the surgeon OR the MRI results that the Pain doctor referred her to. She was still in a LOT of pain. The doc gave her a little strong pain meds and more muscle relaxers. The third visit was the golden one!! The doctor acknowledged that something seemd wrong with the surgery and that she was in a LOT of pain. Still no MRI results OR info from the surgeon!! He noticed that on the VERY FIRST UA showed traces of THC. Said since you used street drugs and signed a contract. I could only prescribe Suboxone. Suboxone is a drug that gets people with opiate addiction off the opiates. WTF??? She was not under any pain management care when she consumed THC or under a contract at that time. AND when my wife asked about cannabis, THE SURGEON SAID, JUST DONT LET IT GET YOU IN LEGAL TROUBLE, IF I COULD PRESCRIBE IT, I WOULD. The Suboxone it a TERRIBLE and SCARY drug. Just trade a possible addiction for a guaranteed one on Suboxone. People ARE CUSTOMERS, NOT PATIENTS!!!She is STILL IN SEVERE PAIN AND CANT SEE ANY OTHER PAIN MANAGMENT BECAUSE ONE THE CONTRACT THEY MAKE YOU SIGN!!!! AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!!!!!

Don’t go here I was in massive pain and needed immediate relief They said physical therapy first, then injections, then stimulator and NO PAIN MEDS Turns out I had two bulging disc’s in my neck that required surgery. Had I done therapy I would have just been hurt worse but he said they have a system so that’s it! So I walked out. And did not hire them. But they still charged my insurance $500
