Awesome experience! Taught very well for 5 minutes and got us out on some waves. Very accommodating with our one day notice that we wanted to try surfing

Billy was an absolutely awesome instructor. For three people who never surfed before, we all were standing up after his instruction. Did not feel rushed, and we had an amazing time. These are the guys to learn with! Thanks to the whole team: Rusty, Billy and Wyatt. Great dudes.

10/10. Took my first ever surf lesson with Shawn and two friends. He had all three of us up and on waves within minutes of us hitting the water. Hung out after the lesson and rode waves near the instructors for another hour. These guys are just out there to have fun and share the stoke. Good vibes all around. I will be looking for them next time I visit Carlsbad for another lesson.

I cant say enough good things about the crew at SoCal Surf Lessons. After a failed attempt at surfing 7 years ago, I decided I wanted to try again this summer and its been such an incredible experience. Rusty and his crew really know what theyre doing and create a fun environment where youre catching waves right away and building confidence in the water, while actually learning techniques so you can surf independently. They provide you all the top of the line gear you need and in great condition. Ive had lessons with Justin, Homer, and Mark and their different instruction styles have resulted in different tips and pointers that have helped me continue to progress and made me completely stoked to get out in the water as much as possible.As if that wasnt enough, their friendly and positive vibes on the beach and in the water made my daughter and son feel comfortable enough to give surfing and body boarding a try too and theyve been loving their lessons as well.Such a rad experience for me and my little humans and definitely a highlight of our summer!

Rusty was very quick to respond via text with answers to questions about the lessons. Our nieces took two lessons on consecutive days and we were very happy with the experience. They had all the equipment the girls needed. Their instructor Justin was fantastic. He was patient and calm and very helpful. Both girls were able to stand on the board by the end of the first lesson and by the end of the second lesson, they were able to do most of the work on their own (although Justin did help with a lot of the paddling and did steady the board a bit to get them going). It was a great adventure and really built their confidence. We highly recommend this company. Would give six stars if we could.

Justin is the best! He took two kids from the Midwest with zero surfing & very little ocean experience and had them standing! Super patient and able to read each person’s strengths/needs. We’ll be back!

Rusty was flexible and accommodating and our instructor, Mark was wonderful! He gave very clear instruction and made me feel comfortable in the water! He was encouraging and fun. Highly recommend!

Had so much fun! The instructors Homer and Miles were great! Wet suits and birds provided and location was super easy to get to.

SoCal Surf Lessons, provides one of the best surfing education experiences you can find in California. Rusty, the owner, and his team of terrific surf instructors are kind, patient and a lot of fun to learn from. They get you up and standing on a board the first day. And if you are looking for more comprehensive lessons over a longer period of time they will work with you to customize each lesson to your needs and quickly help you learn the skills to be a great surfer.

Great experience, we were 5 beginners and Rusty and his crew showed us a great time on the beach! All 5 kids and adults stood up and surfed at least once during our lesson! Highly recommend. 👍

Easy to book and Homer the instructor was very knowledgeable and very patient.The waves were very small today but with his help I got up on the board the first attempt. Homer continually critiqued my stance and weight distribution and within the hour I was able to ride all the way into the beach.

I loved Rusty! He got my child with Downs Syndrome up on a board 3rd try! Surfing! Great lesson! When my daughter tired, the other teacher taught her surf life (hang loose), ecology, and the joy of the ocean.

Rusty and his crew are awesome! Their experience and love for the sport really reflect on their students. My wife recently attended a lesson and rode probably 10 times more waves than I did. I highly recommend them and will continue renting boards and wetsuits from them! 10/10 will go back!

Best thing Ive done in YEARS! The private lessons are the way to go, I saw how the instructors are right with you in the water every minute. My daughter and daughter-in-law took lessons on the first day, sharing an instructor. The second day each one had a private lesson, and I had a private lesson as well. Im a decent athlete but 51 years old with no surfing experience. I felt completely safe in the water, Miles is a fabulous instructor. Justin did a great job with Elizabeth and Noel on the first day. On the second day Rusty taught Noel, got her up surfing and helped her overcome her fear of the Pacific waves. Cant say enough good things about Rusty, Justin, and Miles, they did a fabulous job. I felt completely safe with Miles taking care of me, it gave the courage and confidence to surf for the first time in my life. Thank you for the fabulous memories! We hope to come back this summer for more private lessons. Youll get so much out of it if you pay for the private lesson, well worth the modest additional cost.

What a great company.With all the beach closures and challenges, Rusty made it so easy to get to our spot on the beach with maps and met us.Homer was so patient and swam in rough surf aside from my teenage daughter and got her up on her first try!Such a great experience

One of the best vacations Ive ever had. My 11 yo loved it and was able to learn how to surf with only a couple of lessons. We had Victor as an instructor, he really knew how to work well with kids, very patient and inspiring. Highly recommend!

Took 3 grandchildren, 6, 8 & 10, they had a blast! The instructors were excellent, very patient and clearly enjoy what they do. I would strongly recommend lessons with Rusty and his crew.

One of the best investments I’ve ever made is taking a lesson and buying a surfboard. It’s completely changed my life and I have to thank Rusty and his amazing crew for this. They taught me how to surf in an hour, these guys are all great surfers but even more importantly they’re absolutely remarkable teachers. Never surfed before, called up Rusty and he had the best instructor ready to go the next day. Homer was the man. He was super attentive, and was able to tailor the lesson to me. More than work the money. I was surfing within minutes. They provided a wetsuit, surfing board, and incredible instruction. Go with these guys.

I scheduled a last minute surf lesson for my daughter and her friend. The scheduling process was a breeze, Rusty was responsive and polite and the instructor, Homer, was Awesome. He was kind and patient and in the words of my daughter “Super Cool”! We are already planning a trip back to Carlsbad and SoCal is on our list of things to do again!!Thanks SoCal Surf!!!

Rusty is a super nice guy. He delivered the board I wanted to my hotel and even showed me some good spots. He really is reliable and has an awesome customer service

I was pretty disappointed with my experience. All of the instructors were very kind, but I would not return or recommend it. I spent a maximum of 5 minutes learning on the shore before jumping into the water which felt really rushed. On my second wave, after falling, somehow the board smacked me in the head very hard. I was dizzied but paddled back out and had a huge painful lump on my head. I told the instructor what happened, we checked out the lump and he asked if I was okay, and then he told me that when I fall, I’m supposed to put my arms up to protect my head, which he did not tell me at any point before. I ended up having to stop the lesson 30 minutes out of a 90 minute session because of a headache. When I went to leave and pay, they said they’ve give my a discount, which resulted in me paying $85 for a $95 lesson. I appreciate the thought, but that’s not much of a discount for taking a 1/3 of the time, and getting hurt in part because I wasn’t instructed on how to be safe. I understand surfing is dangerous and you could get hurt (I’m a snowboarder, I get it), and I don’t want to blame them for every injury a client gets. But they didn’t prepare me to be safe and didn’t make many efforts to make up for my time, which I found to be pretty disappointing.

Wonderful experience for the whole family!!!! They were able to set up our lesson on short notice. Rusty and Johnny were great with my 9 and 10 year old boys. Rusty helped with the on shore lesson and Johnny was our instructor in the water. Johnny was great with my boys. They were popping up and riding waves within 15 minutes. They helped us make wonderful memories with our boys and we had a blast. I couldnt have asked for a better experience!!!!

I was just looking for a good experience for my young children. Rusty and his instructor were amazing. Me and my 5 year old had a blast. I highly recommend this amazing experience.

This place is awesome. Place is very easy to find with the instructions given to you. I was taught what to do on shore. That part took about 5 min and we were in the water. The instructor knows what they are taking about. Very happy and highly recommend.

We had the family in town for a couple of days and were looking for some fun experiences for the kids that they would remember for ever. Rusty and his staff came through like champs. Our son (10) had never surfed before... but loves adventure. He is a strong swimmer but struggled to get his board back beyond the breakers. An instructor was with him everytime. My daughter (15) had one previous lesson when she was just 8 or so when we visited NC.After their on beach lesson and safety points. Off they went. Both up on their 1st attempt. They were instantly hooked. Talked about their surfing adventures all day and the next....and I know they will talk about them for the rest if their lives. Our 10 year old now wants his own surf board. Ashame we live near the mountains of Virginia. Great job Rusty. Thanks again.

What a great time!! I purchased the 2 hour one on one lesson. Shawn (apologize if spelled wrong) was a terrific teacher. My 13 year old son had a blast with his first time surf lesson!!! Rusty, the business owner, was professional and communicated beyond expectations. Definitely recommend this outfit for any locals or visitors from out of the area. Thanks again guys!! First time surfing ever. Got up first try! Wiped out a xillikn times. Had super fun. SoCal surf in Carlsbad took care of me. They provided all the equipment and made sure I was ok in the waves. Very cool and super fun. You should go for it!!

We are back for the third year and this time for the surf camp. My boys love it. The instructors are great very friendly and the boys learn to surf. Equipment is provided. Everything is easy going. Well come back next year.

What a great experience. My husband bought our daughter two surf lessons for her birthday and she had her first lesson today. She loved it and cant wait for her next lesson. We came with a youth hockey team and these guys were amazing with the entire group of 30 people. It was an amazing experience and Rusty and his guys were absolutely awesome! Fun time, we highly recommend them!!!

We had a wonderful day with Randy and Staff!!! Very professional and safe. All of us were up and surfing within 1 hour. The kids had a blast and had extra time in the waves to play with boards. Great time with this organization SoCal Surf Lessons. There were 12 of us who came to take the lesson together and they had 4 instructors for us. Great 3:1 ratio meant we always had someone to help out. We booked the lesson for 2 hours. All the instructors were great - super friendly and helpful. They provided wetsuits which kept us plenty warm. Some initial instruction/practice on the beach and then into the water on 9ft-10 ft foam boards. Everyone managed to get up and some of us caught 10+ waves. Would highly recommend.

Awesome guys with a level of chill like no other. These guys not only make it look easy, they make easy the reality. They are attentive, encouraging and knowledgable. Never once did I doubt that the perfect wave was out there for me. They made me want to quit my life and get good at surfing.

Just the best experience truly and greatest group of people that are willing to work with the disabled! 5 stars for sure!

My surf lessons with Rusty were a highlight of my trip to Carlsbad. I was initially impressed with the detailed pre-lesson communication of where to meet and what to bring. As for the actual lesson, Rusty and Billy were great instructors, had a positive and patient attitude, and by the end of the lesson I was catching waves! They were perfect instructors for a beginner like me, but they clearly have the skill and expertise to teach any level of surfer. I look forward to taking lessons again as I return to the area and try to improve. Thanks again!
