We were at site 20 in tents and it was awesome. Site was a great size and you really feel like outside. It was 90 degrees out but never felt it because of all the trees and breeze. Had a little climb to get into water but where this site is its like having a private alcove to swim or paddleboard whatever but has access to Altoona lake. We put our boats in the water there but if you have pull behind you would have to go to other side to drop in. Not far. Has cut beach on camping side just for campers. Day use people have another beach outside of campgrounds. The only negative I would say is that not all camp loops have bathroom so may have to walk. Also, no little store for ice or firewood. Have to travel 3-4 miles to main road where convenient store is at beginning of road leading into grounds. Stop on way in. One of my favorite places so far.

Camp sites are a little close to one another, some are too close when youre trying to sleep in and someone is yelling at their dog at 7 am. Other than that its great. If you like being close to others then youll love it.

Fully expect this to be your worst camping experience ever. From the second you drive up to the gate you will be greeted by the worst people youve ever met. This humans will be angry at you for showing up and even angrier that they cant hear you through the Plexiglas they set up. On top of this you will receive no joy from camping if you spend more than a single second in your 3×3 foot camping space. So if youre ever just truly tired of your fantastic life come down here for a weekend of misery and repentance.

Nice campground.Problem; I believe it is an unsafe practice to lock the gate therefore locking campers in overnight & locking out emergency services. Time is of the essence in an emergency. Theres no time to waste trying to find someone to open the gate to get someone to emergency care.

Love this camp ground so much!! Its beautiful and on lake Altoona. Its peaceful and calm. We set up a bell tent and went glamping and it was amazing. The staff up front are very friendly. Theres a public bathroom with a shower. Our camp site has power and water, which was very nice to have. Highly recommend checking out this camp site.

Great campground! The amenities were nice (convenient showers and toilets) and I loved that there was fresh water at the campsite! The built in fire pit with a grate was a nice bonus too. The campsite was very clean and level with small pea gravel. We loved everything about it except the late night noise from other campers. We will stay here again in the future though!

Pretty campsite on the lake - the spots are spacious and some are quite secluded which is nice. I took a star off my rating because the bathroom block was really gross and obviously not cleaned very often. The shower head was broken off and was just a spurt of hot water. The swim area was nice, my kids enjoyed it.

On 9/5/20 8:20pm the couple running the entrance office were very rude and very cantankerous! They were both, especially the Man, being very confrontational. Way over exaggerating and escalating as though I were an enemy, my request was to enter to pick up my children from a neighbor’s camp ground and leave, it was all that I was there for.By far the meanest couple I have ever come across at a “federal” camp ground.Beware!!! They are NOT nice!!!! Not worth camping here!!!

We had a great time camping here. Family members were able to book sites next to ours. Sites were clean. View of the lake. Bathrooms too far to walk with little ones, but quick drive. Everyone was helpful to all of us at check in. Beach was clean The only negative was the grass growing up and over the campsite border stones, leading to more pests at the table and chairs. And, the woods arent being kept back from edges of lake access near campsites. Definitely one of our favorite places to spend time. Good fishing from some areas, when you can get near the lake.Great place to kayak and see Osprey nests and other wildlife.

Great Campground, family oriented, clean bath houses, great views, really helpful Park Hosts. Were new at camping and my wife had booked online what she thought was a lake view site. Wasnt what we were hoping for.The park hosts Jane and Jerry cheerfully moved us to a site where we were right on the water. Thank you! The other park hosts Dave and Diane Carter found out I was going to have to take off the wheels on the left hand side of my RV to get new tires ( older fifth wheel ). Dave came down with his truck and equipment, jacked up our fifth wheel, took off the wheels, helped load them in our truck so I could get the tires replaced, and put them back on when we got back, with a smile and friendship. I cant say enough about how grateful we are to him! He really took the stress out of a difficult situation. HEY David! Thank YOU!!! You are THE MAN!!! Great campground, excellent hosts! We are definitely coming back!Sam and SueSam and Sue

Bathrooms can be a good walk to get to, but the campground is clean and has all the amenities it should: showers, playground, beach and plenty of trees for shade. Our spot had just a fire pit with a grill topper, which was difficult to cook on, but all the other spots we saw had grills AND fire pits. Close enough to town if you need to run out and get something or make a movie run in the heat of the day.

What a beautiful, clean, peaceful campground! We had a pull-through campsite with views overlooking the lake, in one of the loops that are farther away from the main gate. Im glad we chose the site we did as that end of the campground has a lot more shade than the rest, although there is no beach to speak of up there and no public bathrooms in our loop. But we have a small camper, and therefore our own bathroom, and we werent there for the beach, so we were perfectly content. The park attendants were friendly and helpful and the bathrooms and showers were clean, although outdated and not quite as well maintained as Ive come to expect from USACE campgrounds. The campsites, however, were all pristine.I wish wed been able to stay longer, but we were mostly just passing through on our way to visit with family. Hopefully well stay there again on our way back home, and will be able to make it a longer stay.

This is my local go to campground since it is near my home. We have stayed here multiple times and enjoy the lake access and sites near the water. It has the typical Army Core sites with basic electric and water hook ups and a separate dump station. Bath houses can be a bit of a walk depending on your site. Overall nice campground for the area.

The guy with the enormous beard at the gate threatened to have someone take away my tag because someone said a brightly colored car like mine was speeding in the campsite. Our site was very close to the entrance, so I literally didnt get far enough into the site to speed, and if Im paying my hard earned money to you, do I deserve to be accused of something I didnt do based on the recollection of some stranger? Is that even smart business? Later, the daughter of our friends who were camping nearby got yelled at (by we think the same guy) for camping at the wrong time, which they werent.

Beautiful campground! Who knew. Lots of campsites on the water front, some spots could be a little tight getting into (you cannot judge the site by the map) , 26 foot or less should not be a problem anywhere at this campground. Lots of sites have both 30 & 50 amp hook ups. All sites are paved pads and level. Plenty of room to open slides on your camper. Lots of places for your enos. The only con I would say is that the bath houses are not close to a lot of the sites.

We stayed here with three families for two nights during August of 2015. We rented campsite 99 & 100. Camp site 100 had access to the lake which allowed us some great fishing. The campsite had all the Amenities that you could want. We had a grill, table, and a short walk to the beach/playground. The bathroom facilities were out of date and poorly maintained but were clean and allowed for a hot shower. Some of the camp sites had grill that were at knee level, which would not make it very convenient for use (watch out).My only complaint is the check in process, the folks at the check in booth, were just rude, but that did not ruin our trip. I would highly recommend this site for families and large groups. We would go again.

Review №60

I usually prefer very primitive camping (no restrooms, middle of the woods, hike-in), but my group of friends (camping rookies) and I camped here last year and we loved it so much that we invited more friends this year and booked two sites next to each other for the end of May. The swimming area for Allatoona Lake is pretty big and was up to 7 feet deep last year which is amazing. Most lake campgrounds around here have a tiny swimming area that doesn’t really get deeper than 4 feet. But even with a full beach, we had plenty of space to swim around and hang out. The only draw back: the tent pads are a little small and not very easy to stake into. Our tent blew over last year in the middle of the night during a storm. But that was a small price to pay for the convenience of restrooms and showers. Definitely a great, very well-kept campground for rookie campers or someone who is just looking for a relaxing trip, no muss no fuss.

We stayed at Sweetwater campground for the first time in May of 2017. we have a large 16x16 tent and have a hard time finding spots it will fit on at most campgrounds. We had room to spare here!! We loved it. The spots are spacious, the restrooms were clean, there is a nice large swimming area. Lots of trees on our spot for my boys enos. the only issues we had 1. we didnt catch any fish. probably the fisherman not the fish haha..AND 2. there were some neighbors who kept letting their dogs off leash and they were running all around our campsite NOT OK. but management ,thankfully, made them leave. Campground is beautiful BUT the man in the checkin was soooooo rude! I couldn’t believe how awful he was to the people in front of me, to my husband, and relatives. Everyone that came up he snapped on if they werent ready to give him their tag number. I mean have some patience with people... is it really that hard to ask nicely. I’ve never been here before and didn’t know the procedure, as I was just a guest. He was very militant and harsh in his tone... not just to me but to everyone. Totally put the start of our fun weekend on a sour note. Also, they lock the gates at 10:30pm at night... so make sure you don’t need to leave... that’s totally unsafe and ridiculous.

Our family loves camping at Sweetwater, but for some reason all these old retirees that run these campsites are the RUDEST bunch of people I have ever come across!! I have had the same bad experience at many other campsites in the area. I dont know why they cant be more friendly. People are coming to their camp grounds for a mini vacation usually, and I dont like to start my vacation off with some crotchety old grumpy man barking orders at me! They really need to do a better job in screening these people to run these camp sites. Its not just one its most of them! Teach them some hospitality and customer SERVICE!!

We camped in a motorhome, arriving on a Friday afternoon. The campsite hosts were very pleasant and helpful. However, the campsite was covered with cigarette butts and goose poop. The grill and firepit had not been cleaned; the firepit had partially burned trash it. I am not faulting the crew at the campground as much as I am the previous campers using the site. Campers should be assessed an additional cleanup charge for leaving a trashy site. The rules expressly state not to burn trash in the firepit. I would recommend insect treatment on the mowed grass. I was covered in chigger bites from walking and picking up after our dogs. This is the first time I have ever had this happen at a COE campground. The campsite also had a lot of poison ivy, some growing on the stone steps leading to the water. Because of the trash and chiggers, I will probably go back to McKinney and not return to Sweetwater campground.
