Today at 1pm I went to my appointment at the Plaza Universitaria clinic at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. They opened the door at 1:20 because they were late in the morning and could not attend us on time.As we entered all the 3 girls we were waiting for we were talking loudly about who had arrived first and who had arrived later. Juan Bonilla was in the receptionists cubicle and he immediately turned to a Dominican girl and began to speak to her in a super dismissive way. Asking her for information about what she had come to do at the clinic. Obviously the girl did not know about the services, to which he continued slapping her and talking loudly telling her that if she did not know what she was coming for, she had to talk to the receptionist. At the time we were all (7 girls) in front of the reception watching him mistreat a person who simply did not have information about the clinic, when the duty of the receptionist was to do that job that he was doing in such a humiliating and shameful way for the young woman (which had her daughter in her arms) and the rest of us were there.I turn to the doctor (not knowing that the one who was behaving in this way was a doctor) that the way he was talking to that girl was out of place, since the girl evidently did not know anything about the clinic. He tells me to take care of my words that he sent in that clinic. To which I replied that to do the orientation and organization work of the spaces there was the receptionist who was quiet and completely ashamed of the situation. He tells me that for answering him he could not attend me because the manager was not there and that he could simply not attend me. The doctor comes out of the reception cubicle completely upset and gives a speech in the room about the shifts and what had to be done. Juan Bonilla returns to the reception to let me know that since the manager is not there and he is the one who was in charge of the clinic, he was not going to treat me.The receptionist looks at me with a face of shame and stay calm, and tells me that at least she could do the blood tests that had nothing to do with the doctor. After giving me a complaint sheet to fill out and begin the process of opening my record, she lets me know that since the manager was not there, the services were not going to be provided.Prevén is a clinic for poor people. And Juan Bonilla completely abused the authority granted to him to take harm to patients who do not allow themselves to be mistreated, speak in a bad way and even yell for him.The rest of the team did not support him with their attitudes because it was evident that he was out of proportion and that only that he was having was disgustingly wrong.I thank the receptionist and one of the nurses for their support and for trying to correct a situation that should not have existed if the receptionist had been allowed to do her job and if the clinic had a doctor with fewer authoritarian issues, more ethical and more aware of the sensitive population to which these resources are directed.Having an abuser, who humiliates his patients in front of other patients in a position of power and without supervision can mean that many people prefer not to even step on this clinic, which is the closest they have. The nurse who came out and said aloud to the receptionist that if someone did something to tell her not to attend to her, they also need an orientation about the population they serve and what they should be doing as professionals.I hope they take action on this shameful matter and that they send this professional to take the ethics course and if there is another on sensitivity as well.
