Dr. Shirley is so kind. Me and my husband had a wonderful experience working with him when our son got tubes. He is very wonderful with children and loves what he does. The surgery was quick and well done. Our son has little to no pain and has felt better since. Highly recommend him to others as the pediatric ENT to go to in Birmingham.

If I could leave zero stars I would. This was an atrocious experience. My son is 2 with a speech delay. We weren’t even seen until 45 minutes past our appointment time ans were taken in for a hearing test. The audiologist acted like it was an inconvenience to see us. After the test she said she didn’t “like” where he was developmentally. I told her he has a speech delay and is in music and speech therapy. She asked me 3 times WHO evaluated him and said he only needed speech and how did they do that. She asked several other questions before I stopped her and asked if she was implying he was autistic. She said she JUST had questions, and again wanted to know about his evaluation. I explained, for the third time the only appointment available was during his nap time and he’d had to wait an additional 40+ minutes to be seen, that he was just in no mood for anything. We then waited in the exam room another 15 minutes before we were seen by Dr Shirley. He was with us less than 5 minutes. I explained early intervention was concerned he needed tubes or had a hearing issue, his snoring, teeth grinding, constantly being stuffed up, constantly pulling huge wads of mucus from his nose and our family history of needing tubes. He said that none of that mattered. His nose was stuffy but fine and his tonsils were swollen but didn’t want to do anything about it.I plan to get a second opinion. This is NOT a place to take your toddler

I took my 2 year old to Dr. Shirley at the recommendation of her ped. Shed had 6 ear infections in the last year, three of which were in the last three months, each month. He looked at her ears and didnt really say anything much... he then went round and round talking himself in and out of tubes - I was completely confused by the whole conversation. At the end of what was a very bizarre and pointless conversation he said, lets wait, I dont think she needs tubes. I was OK with a lets wait as I was going to the doctor for his professional answers and opinion. What I was not OK with was the lack of confidence he had in his answer and how he decided that tubes were not the answer. Thank goodness I listened to my motherly instincts and went for a second option. One look in my daughters ears and the doctor said, yes, absolutely, without hesitation, she needs tubes. He explained that her ear was full of fluid and she showed no signs or symptoms of an ear infection at the time. She got the tubes and has had constant drainage which tells me she absolutely needed the tubes.

We had such an amazing experience. The front desk was helpful and the nurse worked so well with my 4 year old (I mean, he really really didnt even want to check his weight, yet she talked him into it). The doc was SO patient with my very anxious child. He understood and still took the time to explain very well to me exactly what we have going on. Then when they called to schedule a procedure, I had a million questions. She was so nice and did not act like I was wasting her time. I am appreciative of how this office has helped this Moms heart about my little ones issues.

My son has been seeing Dr Shirley for a long time. I truly love him as a Dr. Until the last 3 weeks. I am so disappointed. The lady that takes over the prescriptions and PAs for Dr Shirley isnt very perfesonal. I will be changing Doctors. Its crazy that my child still doesnt have the correct medican after 3 weeks. So disappointed!

Im leaving 3 stars even though I only want to leave 1. And that is because Dr Shirley was great with my daughter and very nice. With that being said, we will not be going back because of his ridiculously snotty staff. The audiologist there was incredibly rude. When it was my daughters turn to go back and see her (after waiting 30 extra mins in our room) she wanted to take the toy car she had been playing with. The lady rudely told my child (who just turned 2) that she could not take it out of our room and walked off. Even though her office was literally 2 steps from where we were. I let my daughter take it anyway to avoid a meltdown that would have prevented the Dr from being able to perform any test she was about to do. She told me its because the toys tend to walk out the door with the child. Ummm are you suggesting that Im going to steal some ugly plastic car when my daughter has much nicer toys at home? I was livid and she didnt work with my daughter well and ended up jerking a toy out of her hand before we left. It was all I could do to not lose it on that woman. I wish I could remember her name more than anything! Just because you have a fancy office on a fancy side of town doesnt make you special. The appointment girl Jennifer wasnt all that nice either when I cancelled her procedure for tubes because they made me so uncomfortable. We live in Chelsea and are by no means poor but that is exactly how we were treated by this staff!! The audiologist even tried to give me some info on state funded speech therapy! Are you kidding?? We have insurance but thanks anyway! Look elsewhere!

Dr. Shirley listened to me, and didn’t blow me off like other Drs (when I knew the diagnosis they were giving me wasn’t my son’s problem). They kept saying, “it’s laryngomalacia and he’ll grow out of it”. Something that he’s supposed to grow out of should be getting better not progressively worse, right? I wouldn’t take what they were telling me for an answer and followed my mother’s intuition to advocate for my son until I found someone to help with his respiratory distress. Dr. Shirley was that angel! He listened to me and got my son the help he needed, which was actually a life saving procedure. Our families have thanked God for Dr. Shirley and Dr. Smith over and over again and we thank you from the bottom of my hearts. Because of you TJ has become a thriving 7 month old and not this baby who only wanted to sleep all day, becoming developmentally delayed due to inactivity. All because, after his procedure he can now do something that we all tend to take for granted and that is...SIMPLY BREATHE! May God continue to bless you and your practice!
