My mother was here for 2 years after suffering a stroke. Sadly she had severe mental health issues and we were not really in contact with her so I can not comment on the day-to-day care. Nevertheless, we were not under the impression that she would die. When I received a call she was sent to the hospital with a fever the hospital told me she has lung cancer that spread to her brain and she died 2 weeks later.#1 How does someone live in a nursing home for 2 years and is not encouraged to have a health care proxy?#2 How is someone in care of medical professionals for years who are unaware she has lung and brain cancer and is 2 weeks away from dying?#3 My mother was Catholic and it said so in her records. Yet I was the one who had to suggest calling a priest for last rights - good thing as she died 6 hours later. I shudder to think if I hadn’t been there to visit that day.#4 There doesn’t seem to be any process for a resident dying. Not a single person contacted the family after to express their condolences never mind I had to call weeks after to ask them where my mother’s belongings were - they seemed confused and said it ‘wasn’t that much stuff anyway.’ ? Hu? We’re you just planning on tossing them in the garbage?#5 There were personal funds left in her account that they never contacted me about, and instead sent them to the funeral home (whom she had already paid a year ago in advance) so now it’s good luck to me to try and get my $2,000 back.

Please stay by your loved one if they are passing! My grandmother resided at Essex Park for nearly five years. Overall it was clean and safe, the nurses, activity, and facility staff took good care of her and genuinely cared about her. Over the years they made physical improvements to the building and overall it worked...until her last day of life. She had wanted to wear her 2 favorite rings and never took them off for the whole time she was there. She had mentioned that when she dies, we would have them. We knew she was in her final day, so I went to see her. On that day she held my hand tightly and I took a pic of that. I know from the pic that she was wearing at least one of the rings. I knew she loved those rings and felt the staff was reasonably honest so I did not hesitate to keep them on her. However, when she passed the nursing home was quick to offer her son her stuffed animals, but no mention of the rings. When he later questioned them, they claim they checked, but there was no sighting of them. I know that unfortunately this happens frequently at nursing homes, and its probably just one bad apple employee l, but none the less its stealing and wrong! I know my grandmothers karma will come to this employee, but the nursing home should have strict policies in place to track personal belongings to ensure the residents live and die with dignity. Very disappointing.

Well where do I start !!!! My mom suffered from a spinal stroke. She was in the hospital for 3 weeks . When she was ready to leave and go to therapy the only place that was taking non Covid patients was Care One Essex Park. When speaking to the admission person I was hopeful things would be ok but wow was I wrong. Not being able to get in to check things out We as a family had to pray she would be ok. The day she was going to arrive there I packed up all the things she loved . Her clothes, pictures of her family , make up and Nail stuff etc. We also bought 3 little flowers to bright her room. Nothing was taken out of her bag no pictures and her flowers were dead in the brown bag we brought them in. They did let her wear shirts but nothing else no pants or anything, We would call Daily to see how she was and we would get well she’s not happy to be here. We knew that by our calls to her. She was full of life when she entered . Each day she went down little by little. I asked several times when will we have a family meeting Lauren the social worker said I don’t know. When that is but you should get a letter ( I found that letter in her draw after she died they gave it to her and they had the meeting already and never told us). We finally got a nurse who told us that she had a Kennedy ulcer and that she was end of life and why hadn’t we been to see her. We replied with we weren’t told we could . Unbelievable no doctor called us with her update. We were able to go in 2 days later and she was non responsive . They made so many mistakes while we were there never mind before. They locked the med cabinet key in the cabinet . My mom was an hour and a half late for her morphine she was shaking and scratching her face . Many more mistakes like sleeping cnas with head phones in while my mom was dying. We stayed for 48 hrs aside from 3 hrs to shower and get a nap. She was only there for 2 and a half weeks and she was dead . Such a horrible experience . The one rating is a gift only for a few nurses Bethany ,a male nurse and one other girl . Thank you to Bethany for treating us with the respect we deserved. Please let me know if I can provide you with anymore information. Lauren the social worker really needs to take a course in family communication .

We had a wonderful experience with CareOne, they really understood the importance of making both the patient and their family comfortable with the process of rehab and the importance of keeping the family in touch with the patient in these difficult times. Being able to at least FaceTime with the patient while in quarantine. They also did a great job of communicating with the family almost every day. And everyone returned phone calls in a prompt manner which is not something I have experienced in the healthcare system today. After experiencing the poor communication and lack of empathy for the patient’s family at the Nashoba Valley Medical Center where my wife spent 2 1/2 months CareOne was a breath of fresh air

I have been here since August and its the best place i have ever been! I have been in 5 facilities over the years and this is the best. They answer my call light right away. The administrator and director of nursing are available to me 24/7, even on the weekends. Its like the Ritz carlton. The nurses deserve 25 stars, they are off the chart amazing!

Its been 2 weeks and Im still trying to get my moms property or see if her property is there. Someone took my address down and said theyd call back and never did. The receptionist who answers the phones is completely insensitive and doesnt seem to know her job well enough, directed me to the not so English speaking maintenance person. Ill also say that my mom , RIP, during her time there called screaming in pain and was taken to the hospital hours after the nurse had claimed she was fine. I do not feel that they have been competent in their jobs or in returning property.Update: as of 4/17/19 although they have claimed to call, no voicemail and no call yet. Day 23 of waiting for this call theyve now claimed to have made...Update 4/29/19 Still no word on my moms stuff.Update 5/21/2019 after calling a 3rd party, hospice, and them locating numbers for me to call, I finally have my moms property. I still think I should have been able to get the correct information from your own receptionist... sad you all lack in communication.P.s. my mom said the food was inedible, one of the last texts I have from her. Thanks so much....

We placed my mother here for rehab we were little nervous as her last rehab stay (somewhere else) was not the best experience. I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the center was and how welcoming the staff were from the receptionist all the way to the housekeeping staff. The director Sarah was helpful and supportive. She helped to alleviate a lot of our fears. You can tell she loves her job and helping people. The rehab unit nurses were kind and attentive. I can’t imagine anyone would have anything negative to say about this place! Thanks essex park for getting mom stronger and back home.

One of the worst care giving places I’ve ever visited. My 94 y/o dad was there for three days and said it was horrible. We got him out as soon as we saw the terrible conditions! The place is a joke.Employees sleeping in the corridor while patients are screaming for help. The food was inedible. My dad received zero rehab assistance.I believe that nothing would have happened for him, had I not pressured the head nurse to help us get important test results. We waited nine hours to get simple lab results that pointed towards a life-threatening need for an immediate transfusion. They were going to leave him in overnight if I hadn’t been there. We called an ambulance and sent him to Brigham Woman’s...a REAL healthcare facility. Its just a money making ripoff as far as I can tell.

Was kind of fair a few problems, some people nice and caring, but were some staff shortages had my manual wheel chair went missing but I managed to get it back luckily and some one threw my wheel chair foot rests to the wall, there were problems with people getting threw to me on the phone I think the desk wasnt staffed, and when the physical therapist felt it was time I could go home well the meeting had been falsified of things of how many times the g tube had to be flushed only a few nice persons came to do that I praise them but some didnt do that I had a sassy night desk person and I had to buzz them to come I wanted to get sleep I gave a look in real attitude but I think they wanted me to stay but I had to get the staples out then in the two weeks I had to go back to doctor and get g tube out I couldnt miss that appointment or Id be waiting a month and that wouldnt be good,so I was able to go if people were to come in because I dont like being not at home plus I couldnt sleep all night there ladies across the hall yelling for the bathroom I felt bad for the night person to put up with that, then someone went into the bathroom without a staff and they fell and the fire,EMS etc had to come it wasnt good at all why didnt they go in the bathroom with that person? Thats short-staffed thats why,I dont know if Ill go back to there Id rather be at my own place and not at a rehab placement I do better at home! But Im okay and back to my life again though!

If I could give less than one star I would. The communication between families and social workers are aprehensivable and non-existent. Nurses and PT are good. Would strongly recommend another faculty for your loved one. Administration is just not what you’d want to deal with for a loved one going through a difficult time. Many better places out there!

Worst place ever! Dont go there. You will regret it. One star is being extremely generous. Bad communication, care is even worst. My dad lasted only a year and on his death bed his belongings were stolen. I only wish I had listened to him. Trust your gut. I am referring to the alz/dementia unit. 😟🤬

My father was recently treated at Care One after suffering from a minor stroke. As his health care proxy and POA I’ve been involved with all the decision making when it comes to his health. I was never informed when the initial meeting would take place to discuss the plan of action - it was only a few days after when I inquired that I was told it would take place...in three weeks. I thought that was strange, every other rehab facility we had been to had called me within 48 hours and asked to set up a meeting within the first week. Needless to say any type of communication with the social worker was nearly impossible after that. Phone calls not returned until days later, same with emails. No idea what my dad was even being treated for. The icing on the cake was when my dad was discharged. I was told it would happen on a specific day (this is after serious probing). I visited the night before and the nurses said they did not have a discharge plan in place so it did not seem like he would be discharged. The next day I called for an update and was told he was discharged in the early afternoon. No phone call, no email confirmation that he was back safe at the assisted living place. Maybe I’m an over communicator, but that’s just bad.As the review below said, the nurses and PT/OT are top notch and took good care of my dad. Genuinely kind and wanted him to get better. Unfortunately the administration would keep me from having him go back. It’s stressful enough having to be a caregiver, I don’t need to stress out more because I have to beg for information.

Im Debra Torto-DiScipio and Im writing in response to Deborah DiScipios (ex-sister-in-law) poor review of Care One at Essex Park. Im the Health Care Proxy for both my in-laws who are residents at Care One at Essex Park. I have been extremely pleased with the care theyre getting. The memory unit staff are very attentive to my in-laws needs. When my mother-in-law banged her eye on the bedside table the staff called me immediately and let me know and they had her seen by the medical staff immediately. I think it looked worse than it was. Realistically, the staff cant be expected to have eyes on all residents every minute of the day. My family members obviously have very little knowledge or understanding of what these memory unit facilities deal with daily. Caring for 52 residents simultaneously may yield odors on occasion but overall the housekeeping. nursing and support staff do a very good job. After visiting 18 facilities, and getting recommendations from friends for Care One, we placed our in-laws at Care One at Essex Park and are very pleased with our decision.
