Called to volunteer and its a flat, no, and I cant imagine adopting a pet without meeting them first. I would think if you could show proof of vaccination, wear a mask and sanitize your hands first that adopting an animal in person would not be a problem and same goes for volunteering.
These people are the most kind people Ive ever had the pleasure of knowing.. thank God for the dog food they gave me.
Great place, we get all our animals here.
The staff at this location are physically abusing the cats. Beware local adopters who are interested in getting at cat they also lied about all the health problems my cat had when I adopted him and it’s real age!
Adopted a kitten today from Berkeley. I came all the way from Eastern Maryland to Berkeley. I had a great contact with the employee, she was friendly, available and knowledgeable. After 2 failed applications in our local SPCAs without any reasons, I felt like Berkeley was personalized, reliable and military friendly.

Treated Goliath with love
Wonderful folks! Helped us out with food & litter for our kitten.
I love what they do. We went to drop off blankets and food after our beautiful 13 year old English bulldog died. They were glad of the donations, but truly sweet about our deep sorrow. Will continue to donate...and someday...
I love this place because they has been feeding my 8 dogs in this several months of the pandemic, God bless the persons who helps for this still giving 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Very low cost vaccinations. Better than VIP, which is still not working.
Great people who love animals work here. I especially enjoy visiting the Cat Chalet and giving some TLC to the kitties waiting on their forever homes
Awesome staff! Great place to fix your fur babies at a reasonable cost..Thank you Berkeley Humane!Great work! Shes doing great!
I adopted Champ, now know as Charlie. It was the best decision Ive ever made. Hes made my life complete and is a wonderful therapy animal. If you are looking for a new friend, then I highly recommend a shelter. The animals have had it so rough, just a little bit of kindness goes such a long way.I guarantee you wont be sorry.
I’ve been a volunteer here for a little over a year. The staff is compassionate and professional, everyone works hard to keep the facilities clean, and the animals (of course) are amazing. It’s incredibly fulfilling work. Available animals are posted by 7pm on Thursday to the website. If you are interested in a specific animal, especially a puppy, kitten, or “special” breed, I’d suggest coming at 10:30 on Fridays, before our adoptions start for the week (they run FriSatSun 11am-5pm). There are no holds, so the early bird gets the puppy! In addition to adoptions, there are tons of other services provided that make this place really special to the community. There’s a pet food pantry, dog training classes, low-cost spay & neuter, and even counseling for grief after the loss of a pet. This is what’s called an “adoption guarantee” shelter, which means that no animal is EVER euthanized for time or space—everybody who comes into the shelter has as long as they need to find a family, no matter how full we get. I’m writing this in August 2018, and we have a cat who has been with us since January. Berkeley Humane can afford to do this because we are a private nonprofit (funded by donations, controls our own intake of animals—we DO NOT TAKE IN animals from the public, we pull 100% of our animals from other, overcrowded shelters) as opposed to a public municipal (funded by the government, must take in any and every animal). No shelter wants to “kill” animals, and we are lucky to be able to operate the way we do (without the constraints of a public municipal shelter).
We adopted our sweet little kitten Winnie from here. The staff are so friendly, caring and helpful! We would love to adopt again soon, every animal there deserves a new home!
After a loss of our dear family dog, we searched for another. At Berkeley Humane Society we found understanding and professional help in the adoption process. The staff was thorough in determining if we were a good fit for the dog we wanted. We couldnt be happier with Berkeley Humane and of course, our Cassie.
I volunteer here, so can vouch for the quality of care these animals get. Ive seen so many animals arrive in dire need of socialization and medical help. And Ive seen them all get adopted. The gratitude and love the animals give back is priceless. Looking for love? Open for adoptions Fri-Sun 11-5.
Im giving this place a one star because there is no zero star, my family and I went here and we found a cat that we fell in love with, all of the volunteers were being very nice but when we got in the line to adopt him a volunteer come up to us and told us that someone else had already adopted him, my daughter myself and him son were all in tears because it was honestly the worst day of your life, we have been talking about getting a cat for a little over a year and we were all crushed to hear this news, and the volunteers did not seem to be simplicity at all! Over all a horrible experience!
During the entire 6 months that I volunteered here, I can confidently say that no other work place can have a more sincerely positive atmosphere than Berkeley Humane. Everyone who works here truly wants to be here, they are supportive and kind to one another, and they care about the animals. They are patient, loving, and maintain their good humor no matter what the animals do. The dogs and cats are well taken care of, the volunteers and staff are appreciated, responsible and dedicated. A great organization.
Got our pup spayed here. Incredibly efficient and affordable among all other clinics in the bay area. Not to mention kind thoughtful staff. Parking was a bit ruff. ;)
Some of the best people on Earth work here. Thanks for finding me the perfect dog
Well run shelter with adoptions and fostering. All animals are examined by onsite vet. All are neutered and up to date on vaccinations and meds. Animals can be returned anytime after adoptions for any reason.
I volunteered here. Excellent organization. Animal heroes!
Had puppy classes here and they went great. Very informative and helpful
Great service for the community, taking so good care of dogs and cats while finding them permanent homes. I am happy to volunteer there!
Nice people, cute animals. The prices are much less expensive (about half the price) than other SPCAs and if youre a Senior, its 50- bucks for a kitty cat.
Excellent facility doing their best to help critters find a happy home. Wonderful to see dedicated people helping others.
This is an amazing place to adopt the dog or cat of your dreams. There is always a variety of ages, colors and breeds. The staff is great to work with and doing creative outreach to adopt out as many pets as possible. They rescue pets from other shelters which is remarkable.
I had to turn in my sweet babies Silver and Shadow. They were so kind and understanding. I asked if they could be place 2gether bcuz they are brother and sister. They are best friends. I miss my fluff balls
The puppies and kittens available for adoption are cute and well cared for. They also host great/fun fundraisers routinely.
This is about the customer service..I was acknowledged by a nice young woman when I walked in. When I asked a question regarding a dog, the blonde curly haired woman was rude. Rolled her eyes at me when I asked questions and I felt completely inadequate for being there. I felt like I was in the wrong for asking questions about the dogs for adoption.I was really taken back by the way I was treated. I went out of my way to come here and to be treated like this makes me so hurt. You really made me feel terrible today. I just dont understand why I was treated this way. I came in there smiling and asked about a dog and for people to watch the videos in the computer rather then helping me and for that lady to treat me like this was wrong. All because I wanted to know about a dog I was interested in.
Great people caring for animals. Great volunteers.
Great dog training classes.
Great place for your ideal Dog or Cat
The cats and dogs are adorable! The very friendly staff does everything possible to make the adoption process easy and ensure that the animals are placed in good homes.
They abuse the cats
Amazing place :) great staff, great pets!
We adopted a dog last month and are doing the obedience classes with him. The adoption was simple, and the classes are great!
Bark by the Bay event was awesome, with many booths and even free ice cream provided by NBC news.
Love this place and all they do for the animals.
Wonderful no kill shelter. Lots of puppies and kittens!
Very helpful, kind people.
Berkeley Humane cares deeply about their cats and dogs! Ad the staff is very knowledgable and accessible.
The perfect place to adopt, I am so happy with my dog I got there.
The workers here are very kind and we loved the dog that we adopted here!
Excellent place with a caring staff. Very adoptable cats and dogs. Clean and sanitary.
I got two of my animals here and soon to be three. They take such good care of the animals here they are raised so well!
Great people and great animals.
They love their puppies and kitties!
Great place to adopt rescue pets
They are a great place to adopt or to foster animals. I have been fostering for them for about a year.
Say non kill shelter...bs
I volunteer there and love it
The people that work here are awesone!!! Our fur babies waiting for their forever homes are taken care of wonderfully!!!
I have been a volunteer for some time and the staff is really great and very caring.
This is the place if you want to foster dogs and cats! I have been a foster parent for great dogs and there were many times were I almost had a foster fail (meaning I almost adopted the pups). There are wonderful pets here and each one of them have great personalities. My first pup was a cute 50lb pitbull who falls asleep everywhere and loves to cuddle. The experience changed the way I looked at pitbulls and even though that pitbull went home to a loving family, I still think about him. It also changed my life and for the better. Its a great way to take a break from your hectic life and just play with a cat/dog.
Very nice shelter facilities for dogs and cats, kind and helpful staff. Adopted a kitty named Shadow.
Heres the brief story. we went last week to see a dog. arrived at 1/2 hour after they opened. we were third in line to see this white dog. we looked at others and left. a week went by, the same white dog was re-listed.this time, we arrived 1/2 hr before they opened. we met with w/ staff who told us dogs history and its situation: he was skittish/shy/ didnt feel comfortable around men/didnt like to be petted by strangers. yes he had been adopted last week but adopters returned him. same thing had happened the week before. this took about 5 minutes, then we we given 10 minutes to walk the dog. 10 minutes? i ask. they answer that there are 2 other people there to see same dog.we began walking. im thinking...so i cant pet you and we get 10 minutes to decide if we want to adopt you. we return 10 minutes later. we are asked our choice. we say well we dont really know, 10 minutes was/is short. they gave us a few more minutes at most, twice coming back to us to ask our decision.we passed on this sweet white dog. we hope you found a good home and hope the process to place others like you gets reviewed and extended for a special needs dog--prob many adopted dogs -- i think time is important to decide if its a match, lest you get mis-matches and the dog suffers.a final note.... we went to milo in richmond. we were given 1 hour to walk the dog. there happened to be no line for this dog so we stayed 3 hours. they have their own dog park with agility/obstacles. granted there was no line to see this dog, but we felt we could make a responsible decision with regard to parenting a dog for its life b/c we had an hour.we appreciate both milo and b.e.b.h.s for they mission they fill. just felt that both policy and staff at milo were more a match for us. thanks.
Great place to adopt a pet.
Lots of love in this shelter.
Come in and meet your next furry friend! If you want to adopt, check their site on Thursday for available pets, and plan to go early in the weekend to meet them. We adopted our kitten there and couldnt be happier.
