I submit this review of my experience with Dr. Stephen Hart in April 2021 out of love and compassion for fellow patients.Dr. Hart shirked his responsibility as a care practitioner and medical health professional by treating me poorly, fat shaming me, and not listening to my concerns about my health. His lack of diligence, compassion, and professional demeanor were so traumatizing to me, it has taken me over two months to even compile this account. In April 2021, I went to see Dr. Hart, who had been my physician for a few years. Every time I saw him, he glossed over my medical history, and told me the priority was for me to lose weight. He did not question or listen to aspects of my health that might be preventing me from doing just that. I felt fat shamed, and had trouble reaching out to him when I noticed blood in my stool. However, panicked about what it might mean, I messaged Dr. Hart and made an appointment to come in. To better give him a holistic picture of my health situation, since he never asked during our meetings or tried to elicit the information from me, I made a list of everything that was concerning me.When I arrived at the Dr.’s office, I sat in the waiting room for 20 minutes past my appointment time. Finally, Dr. Hart came out. I began to get up, thinking it was time to go in. He halted me, and waved a copy of the list I had made, which his receptionist had printed out for him, in my face. “This is ridiculous.” He told me. “18 things? This is completely unreasonable. You’ll have to wait longer, and this list is ridiculous.”“Well,” I said, completely humiliated and stammering, “Whichever thing is more important to deal with….”“We’ll deal with what you made an appointment for,” he said, rudely, turning his back to me. He went back into his quarters, closing the door behind me, but I could hear him loudly proclaiming to the receptionist and to himself again how “unreasonable” my list was.Completely at a loss for what to do, I waited 10 more minutes. I thought about leaving, but I had come a long way to see him and was, quite frankly, a bit shocked by his rude and unprofessional behavior. I felt blamed for being sick, and for being proactive enough to make a list. Finally, Dr. Hart beckoned me in. His eyes were on his chart and he seemed annoyed. “So, blood in your stool.” He looked up at me and I had tears in my eyes. I asked if he had a nurse present. “What? No.” He responded. “Why?”“Well, then -- can your receptionist come in while we have our session?,” I asked. “Or can we leave the door open?” He got angry again. “I think you need to find a new doctor,” he told me.Alarmed and bewildered, I followed him out to the waiting room. I, too, was angry at this point. How could a doctor sworn to treat the sick engage with a patient in way?“Where can I complain about this visit?” I asked his receptionist. Dr. Hart quickly rounded on me. “Online. Have a good day,” he said, dismissing me. I left in tears, and have seen another doctor since. The trauma of this interaction cannot be understated. It is difficult enough for people of color to trust doctors in this country. This kind of behavior needs to be called out and censured for what it is -- abuse of power, negligence, unprofessional.

Well, Im glad im not the only one that has experienced issues with Dr. Hart.Im particularly disappointed as he had been my Dads doctor for almost 10 years. This changed when 2 things occured, my dads ailments started getting worse, & being told my dad couldnt see the doctor until we cleared up a $200 bill which was accrued unbeknownst to me. My dad had Medicare & Medi cal & I thought the office visits were covered in full. It was strange that it was the 1st time that was ever an issue at the office after being a patient for years. It was only when I raised a fuss, not believing the doctor would be this chickentshit , especially since my father was an elderly man with dementia, seizure disorder & had a couple of strokes that he was allowed to be seen. I noticed when we were seen now Dr. Hart wouldnt automatically schedule my dad for a follow up appointment a month later, as he always had.So there was a noticeable pulling away from my father after this. The clincher was when my dad had another very serious stroke. Unlike all doctors Ive had , if my father had a stay in the hospital, Dr. Hart would never be privy to it. So I would have to brief him to the best of my abilities, which would obviously pale in front of what a doctor or hospital could brief him on. My dad now couldnt walk at all & started having tremors & spasms that seemed to pull at his tendons , causing an excruciating pain. Dr, Hart would not prescribe anything for pain, saying he didnt want to put anymore meds into the mix ! While in general, I could perhaps understand this P.O.V, but not when my dad is in unbearable pain. I would stay awake @ night, almost feeling like I had a small child in pain & not being able to take it away. I knew we were at the ending of my dads life, & nothing mattered more than making my dads pain go away. He made my dad white knuckle pain for 3 WEEKS !! My dad was never one to complain about pain, but he was be in tears sometimes & said he wished he was dead a number of times. I couldnt believe this was happening. It took us these weeks to just get him on Comfort Care so he could be without pain. My dad is gone now, & im still livid that my dad had to go through such trauma in his last days on earth. I had a massive falling out with Dr, Hart, when he tried to turn the tables & say I needed to do better . I was the one up all night with my dad. I always thought Dr. Hart was quirky , but I never thought he would just stand by & watch an elderly patient being wracked with avoidable pain. Just unethical behavior.

As I began to explain my issues...he rudely interrupt me and say I only want to hear one problem?? I said I have multiple pain etc. The doctor, patient relations was non existence, I still managed to finish telling him my injury he then refused to accept the fact bc of my age???...after that he adds by saying we are either compatible or not etc..?..I couldnt wait to leave his mind set. :((

I have read a number of reviews of dr. Heart. It seems that a few people found him great but the majority of the reviews were very negative. Which I fully understand after my first appointment with him this week. Whats more is that all these negative reviews sight the same issues that I encountered! Stephen Heart is by far the worst doctor I have ever seen! He is dismissive, unkind, talks very fast and does this right over what your trying to tell him. He seems to have a predisposed judgment against clients with psychological issues like EDD, bipolar, depression (this I see reflected in the reviews I have read).I like another reviewer was told about big pharma. He had no respect for the work I have done with my psychiatrist of over 15 years. Who unfortunately is retiring soon and dosent take the insurance I was forced to buy when I was laid off due to the pandemic. From the second he walked in Stephen rushed through everything as if he only had 5 minutes. Ignored what I believe to be serious health issues and symptoms that I attempted to convey, and in the end told me he could not work with me. On the way out he said to me, I hope you get a job. I was stunned by our visit for hours. Ive never been treated with so little respect from any doctor, let alone any employer, or professional of any kind. I not only do NOT like this man, frankly I would call him dangerous. (That being being demonstrated by the review saying that he had left the patient without important medications multiple times by either not returning her calls or by making the mistake of using expired prescription slips. The reviewer goes on to say that he blamed the mistake on his assistant, and was so rude about the pharmacy pageing him that they actually refused to fill any further prescriptions from Dr. Heart!) Now that shows he is indeed dangerous! I would not only discourage anyone from seeing this man, I would encourage anyone who has seen him to write a review. This man should NOT be working in the medical field.Stay well away from Dr. Stephen Heart!

Please DO NOT go to Dr Hart for any medical help. From the moment he stepped in he was decided on what the issue was, ignored any feedback from the patient and did not provide any helpful information. He spent half the appointment making mysogynistic jokes and sexist comments and the other half of the appointment he was trying to sell us on a birth control product (we were in there for a completely different and totally unrelated issue) which he never even tied back to the initial problem. His demeanor towards women is completely unacceptable. Dr. Hart, please retire and stop harassing women and belittling them when they are down.

Doctor Hart is a funny, normal person (something in very such short supply in Berkeley) and a great doctor. If I were still in California he would without a doubt be my family doctor for life

Dr. Stephen Hart is excellent. Hes very straightforward, respects the time he has with you and helps you get to the root of any issue you might be having. He asks lots of questions, empathizes and offers very meaningful paths to take to solve a problem. He tends to look at the bigger picture of wellness, which is what I appreciate most. On top of that, hes super charming and witty, which makes it always a pleasure. Totally recommended.

My initial visit I found the Doctor to be a bit quirky but extremely pleasant and personable. Unfortunately this was short lived. I had an awful interaction with Ileana Collins the receptionist. I had a question about a copay and soon found myself arguing with a very unprofessional, angry person with an extremely poor disposition. When I attempted to articulate my concerns to the Doctor he immediately jumped to her defense citing her; “impeccable resume” I soon realized why the receptionist was so emboldened as her boss was a complete and total jerk who made me feel as though I was not a valued customer. I filed a grievance with Health Net & Brown & Toland physicians. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND DR. HART EVER!!!!!!

Doctor Hart has been my doctor for almost 3 years now. He is highly rational and has a great sense of humor; a great combo for a doctor. Ive always been treated respectfully, efficiently, and effectively by him.

Started seeing Dr Hart about six months ago. I take medication that requires an office visit whenever I need a refill. He told me on our initial meeting that he does not think my disorders (ADHD and depression) are real, but in fact a scam created by Big Pharma. He agreed to issue my prescriptions anyway. He struck me as a bit eccentric but a nice enough man. The most recent time I needed a refill, I called his office for a couple of days and no one ever answered. He finally responded to an email and I was able to get an appointment. Waited in his lobby for over half an hour with no explanation or apology. When I went to fill the prescription, the pharmacy refused it because it was written on an outdated prescription pad. This happened to be on a Saturday. Pharmacist had to page (!) him in order to notify him of the situation before she could fill the prescription. He was so rude and hostile to pharmacist on the phone that she told me she will no longer honor prescriptions written by him. I was shocked. I emailed him, told him what had happened, and asked him to remedy the situation. In response he sent me a belligerent rant. He rebuked me for disturbing him on a Saturday, complained that the pharmacy voicemail system was too complicated, blamed the mistake on his office assistant, and said that if I wanted to remedy things I should file a formal complaint against the pharmacist (who was only doing her job). I have never encountered such unprofessional conduct, and the fact that he only doubled down when I voiced a complaint is all the more disturbing. Avoid!

Seems nice enough, but youll be better off seeing literally anyone else. Ive seen a lot of Doctors over the course of my life, and he is the worst that Ive seen. Doesnt return phone calls. Unmotivated staff. Lack of compassion for patients. Has left me in a bind without meds more than once. Find a different doctor. Not worth risking your health with a bad doctor.
