Came here for the birth of my daughter. They managed to suck almost every bit of joy of the experience from me. Out of at least 50 nurses that I have delt with only three have been kind and most really dont seem to know what they are doing. All while being condescending to me. Not to mention the security. I have been harassed every time I go anywhere no matter how many different clearance passes I get from them. Have gotten well over 7. I have bad anxiety and they put it through the roof. Im so stung out by them that I am leaving my baby and girl here who need me for my own mental well being. A c section birth and she needs me but I cant take it anymore. Do not ever choose here for the birth of your child.

The doctors and nurses there saved my life! Their prompt diagnosis and prognosis is why I’m still alive today(3 years)so I’m forever grateful!

Came in with excruciating pain. I am aware wait times in an ER can be long but this was absurd. I have amazing reviews for the registrar (wish I knew their names), X-ray tech, and guards who were wonderful! However the doctor (Dr. Wilkey not sure if spelling correctly) was extremely condescending. You make enough to at least pretend you care about your patients. I am still in excruciating pain but am unsure if I’d rather cry at home for the next few days in pain than experience the condescension from the Dr. who admitted had seen me in the waiting room (where I was sobbing in pain) and showed the worst patient care I have ever seen. I am a premed student and this experience is one I will remember as what NOT to do as a doctor in the future.

My mom had surgery here, and it went well. However, the nurses are rude to patients and are physically hurting them. I understand that it is a high stress and a tiring job and emotions should be left at home, but empathy and genuine care for the patients should not be left at home. We are going to look for a different hospital if we have future surgeries.

I came here to write a positive review for the doctors and nurses at this hospital, and not so good review for the security lady we encountered today at 11:20am. I took my sister here yesterday for labor and delivery and I am so thankful for the articulation and professionalism of the doctors and nurses. They were very skillful and calm. They had helped my sister deliver a healthy baby and I almost cried watching them in action. I respect all the hard-work from our health care workers. Today, I took my wife back to the hospital lobby and the security lady was giving us a hard time. We came in at 11:20am and we explained to her that my brother-in-law needs to leave for work so we are switching position to take care of my sister. The lady was very rude and dreadful. She was yelling at us and treating us horribly. I would be happy if she explains to us the reason why we cant visit my sister because my brother-in-law has to go to work. I understand that we are in a COVID-19 pandemic and there is a restrictions to enter the building; however, she have to explain to us. She started yelling at us and told us to leave. I was very upset. Any employee at the hospital should not treat a visitors like this. This is a place for resting and soothing, not for having an argument. This security lady has a nasty attitude. I hope she get training again. Its very disappointing that one person can messed up the whole reputation for the hospital staffs. Most of my family members come here for medical reasons and we have never approach this kind of situation. Thank you Dr. Durant and Nurse Vanessa. You guys are awesome!

The in-patient care was good, and a lot of doctors took part in the diagnosis making. The nurses could be both friendly and strict depending on what the situation required. In other words, the healthcare was good. On the other hand, the social worker took several days to reach out with some of my belongings she had and I wasnt even aware she had them so I assumed I had lost them -- this included all my clothes and passport. Also it took more than 12 hours for the doctor to come and discharge me. These were the cons -- not very serious.

Hospital is alright . SECURITY allied Barton not all but some make alta bates name go down the drain straight disrespectful no manners to the patients. Jacqueline needs to be retrained shes as rude as it gets. Waited 30 min in the lobby to be check in for the lab . Gave all of my information and i have been told that they do not work with Sutter Health care plus HMO and i must pay for my lab test . I said ok fine how much will be ? Oh let me call …. Oh i am sorry we don’t do prenatal lab test here ! Ok it’s a freaking hospital I saw probably 5 pregnant women walked in where do you send them for lab tests . I wasted an hour with this incompetent person

The doctors and nurses at both Alta Bates Hospitals are excellent. The social workers are the absolute best. When I was hospitalized with a broken hip, the social worker helped me arrange for my disabled husbands home care, as well as for my own post-op rehab. When my husband was hospitalized for abdominal surgery a few years ago, the social worker got him admitted post-op to the Alta Bates Summit in-hospital rehab unit, which worked wonders in getting him walking again.During the COVID-19 pandemic, my husband visited the Berkeley ER several times, because of a hernia that eventually required surgery. Each time, the ER people helped me get him safely loaded into the car when I picked him up. ER staff made me wait outside, but they were very pleasant, and very clear that it was because of the hospitals strict no visitors policy during the pandemic. The staff kept me well informed of my husbands condition and treatment, by telephone, while he was in the hospital. My husband reported that the staff treated him very well. We are both over-70 seniors.

It’s a horrible experience being here at the emergency room. I came here for nerve and muscle pain and instead Dr. Hirshberg looked at me for skin rashes. After a very long wait (more than 5 hours), he didn’t care to listen to what exactly I came here for. I had written it in the entry form what exactly I was here for and still, it was ignored. It’s very important for nurses and doctors to listen to the patient carefully before proceeding with any diagnosis. No one is interested in listening here. What a great step in patient care. A patient will not go to the ER if s/he doesn’t feel s/he has a serious issue. The lack of empathy and seriousness shown by the doctor and nurse at the entrance was shocking. Will have to report this issue to the California health department.

One of the worst hospital experiences I’ve had. My fiancé and I waited for over 4 hours in a chaotic waiting room while the staff argued amongst themselves about an Instagram post. It was the most unprofessional unacceptable behavior I’ve ever seen in a hospital. The quality of care from the nurses was completely overshadowed by the complete lack of control and professionalism on the front end. If you can avoid this place at all costs you’d be doing yourself a favor.

I was looking through my birth certificate and it shows that I was born in this hospital 13 years ago

Drove 40 minutes with husband for a procedure that took hours; was told by Radiology, that I could wait in the lobby. Security kicked me out because of COVID-19 rules. I had to wait in my car in the parking structure for 7 hours because I wanted to stay near my husband. Security allowed me to use the bathroom once and the supervisor told the front Security lady that I was not allowed to come back into the hospital. I wasnt even allowed to come back to use the ATM to get money for parking. Mind you, I did NOTHING WRONG and Im 60 years old with a limp. The Security lady at the desk was inhumane. Wish I had gotten her name. I guess Ill settle for remembering her as pure evil. Heartless people should never work with patients and their families.

The workers at this hospital saved my life. Every staff member that I encountered was kind and competent.

I was admitted to this hospital ond March 11 with a serious health problem and doctors nurses they did all what they could to help me I just want to thank every one involved they did an awesome work I felt like they really care about me thank God I was able to recover and thanks everyone at Alta Bates that help me

They helped me with my medical issues in a timely way despite the heavy load of visits they were handling. Very good.

Their doctors are just horrible! My baby was in the NICU and the neonatologist (that I have no say over) almost killed her due to malpractice. She was given indomethacin without food when she was deemed failure to thrive. The neos dont tell you that and you are forced to just trust them. When you find out your baby was starved to keep them alive, its too late. They all look out for each other, and certainly not the babies. You try to make a complaint and the hospital says oh we dont care, tell the CA med board, as the doctors just make the hospital money and are contracted workers. I feel bad for all the great nurses that work there.

Nurses were pretty great and kind but some of the staff in the front were rude and didn’t seem to care in any way about patients.

If you want to pay $400 for an x-ray and then be told for 5 months that “the person who sends them to doctors is out” then have fun with this one. Will never return.

Advised and gave me an x-ray for a knee injury after I requested analysis of soft tissue damage. Another time, a friend took too many magnesium supplements, and they tested his blood for sodium and potassium levels. Still charged him for the procedure. Absolutely disgraceful hospital and highly advise driving the extra distance to avoid.

Excellent care I had my baby in 2017 my doctor was Catlyn she was awesome and my nurses were incredible I love this hospital I want to have all my kids here if possible and the food was so yummy and the staff were so nice so sweet and calm and very catering to youre needs

Went here last night and Im fairly certain that two of the dr.s I saw (who appeared to be men), were amphetamine addled. The bedside manner was a joke. It was really stressful. Apparently these Dr.s have never met a trans person and had no understanding of what a pronoun is. Stressful place to be when you feel really sick.

DO NOT GO TO ALTA BATES. Went to the ER with a 104.5 degree fever with chills and a terrible headache, and the nurse didnt seem to care at all. Had to wait FOUR HOURS for the doctor to see me and tell me to just take tylenol. Even though my fever was serious, they didnt conduct any tests or give me any medication. Both the doctor and nurses were extremely unprofessional. After seeing the doctor, I had to wait an additional hour to get my prescription that I got so fed up and left. Social care team, please dont apologize after the fact—the apology does nothing to take back the wasted time, energy, pain, and hope I had for curing (or even finding out) what this virus is. People are in the ER for a reason—theyre emergencies, so please treat them like emergencies. I would advise Alta Bates to do some less apologizing and more reforming to make sure all patients are taken care of as quickly as possible. Extremely disapointed.

My sister had her baby girl here just two and a half weeks ago. Friendly staff. Nurses would hold a nice conversation with all in attendance. Made sure that even the visitors were taken care of. Beautiful gift shop had gifts in all price ranges and for the whole family.

I would make it minus 10 if I could .they spoke to me like I was a 3year old . My husbands brain is bleeding and its been 6 hours and they have only accomplished to tie him to the bed irritate him and give him downers in the attempt to knock him out because he wants to go to a different hospital. They are not doing him any justice by making him scream like a lunatic . And like I said his life is hanging in the balance, because hes still bleeding in side his head. I dont know how its legal to force him to stay were their not helping him.....

This hospital is extremely unprofessional, handling things too slowly, their promises are never correct, one nurse would say one thing and the other will say some other thing, which makes the patient so confuse. I went to took an X-ray a week ago which they said it will be send to my physician on the following day. I have an appointment with my physician 5 days later, yet the X-ray is still not arrive. Visiting the hospital also causing much trouble with all the paperworks and registration and appointment, causing so much trouble that I have to go back and forth before finally the X-ray can be done. I’d recommend that you make an appointment online before going to this place. Not only did the attitude of the administrative nurses are impatient and rude, the waiting time is long too, they do not open on weekends even though they said they do, and wasted my time for coming in the weekends without any department operating. I’d avoid this hospital at all cost, they are extremely unprofessional and bad attitude towards patients.

I had popped my jaw at night and was taken here by ambulance. They had one doctor working and the wait was unbelievable. I sat in pain for 3 hours and none of the staff cared. It was only when I began to vomit that they took notice. Some of them just looked disgusted, but at least I was taken in to finally see the doctor after all this hell. Terrible experience.

Not just because i was born in this very hospital 33 years ago. it has always been a great hospital. maybe ive been very lucky. i just prefer to come here over any other.

The nurses were not only helpful and nice but are genuinely looking after the comfort of their patients and family. We stayed there two nights and the experience helped alleviate the pain of surgery. Even the parking attendant helped in lowering our fee by suggesting to get the weekly rate. It was our first time but I sure will go there as my primary hospital of choice.

This is going to be a long long rant. Terrible experience in the ER in this hospital. First off, the amount of waiting that we had to do in this hospital is just ridiculous. We spent most of our 3 hours there waiting for a nurse/doctor to come and assist us. By the time a doctor actually came, he quickly spoke to us and had to leave mid-talk, I expected him to come back and finish his explanation about whats going on with my boyfriend but he did not come back. Secondly, my boyfriends condition did not get any better after coming here. They prescribed medication that did nothing.Moreover, the staff there are so unprofessional. The only thing separating the room we were in and the hallway outside was a thin curtain. I dont know what the hell they were doing outside, but the staff were shouting and laughing, and I overheard the nurses talking about what their best pick up line is, then they started shouting and celebrating about the arrival of these 2 nurses, I was just overall confused. The nurse told my boyfriend that the fluid given to him will make him drowsy and would be effective if he took a nap. The loud noises outside just didnt make it easy for my boyfriend to rest.This two stars was given because the only thing that this hospital helped with was the major headache that my boyfriend had (and this wasnt the major issue he was having)Ended up going to Golden Gate Urgent Care the next day. Could say they took way better care of my boyfriend and prescribed relevant medication for him.TLDR; Gave wrong medication, unprofessional staff, ended up going to another hospital the next day.

Not good at all in the emergency room came in with an infection in my eye and doctors took long to see me and prescribe me only with eye drops

When I need help and wave my hands, even if someone see me, they have no reaction. And for my test results, at first they told me I need to wait for 30 min. But after 90 min, they told me they don’t know when will I get result. Ridiculous

After an urgent care visit, the doctor highly suggested I quickly visit the ER. There were over 15 people ahead of me. I spent 4 hours in the waiting room. A women came around midnight stating there was no definite time, but there were 7 people in rooms that needed to be admitted. At last. I was given a room. However, no one checked in on me or stopped by to ask if I needed anything for over an hour. The nurse came in and stated I was unassigned, she did not take an vitals nor ask me about my pain, she left saying they were short staffed. She did not seem at all concerned with me, rather the rush of the night. After 2:30 hours in my room with no update, I walked to the desk to see if I was able to go home. There were about 5 nurses looking at computers. Still over 3 hours later no update. I was given instructions almost 7 hours prior not to drink water and to wait to talk to the doctor. There was one doctor on staff. Finally, I thought a doctor was coming to see me, turns out she was coming to materials from my room. I believe I am a patient person, but I feel I have lost my patience after 7 hours with no update if I can have fluids or little understanding or concern about why I am here. I will not being coming back for any future medical concerns. You lost my trust in saving anyone from any future emergncy. May all be safe.

An absolutely horrible hospital. Visit to the ER took over 3 hours, nobody could tell me what the costs would be. Finally after a 5 minute visit a lady with a credit card reader demanded $2800.A month later someone calls and I was asked to pay another $250 doctor fee even though it was only a nurse that attended to me and put glue tape on my wound.What an outrageous and disgusting excuse for healthcare Ive also noticed that someone at Alta Bates works to remove bad reviews from Google.

I got the experience from Alta bates hospital, they really practically apply love n care towards patients. my wife n I love the place n they treat us very well.

I was at the emergency room recently and was astounded to see that staff at the nursing station were not wearing masks and were not social distancing. This is a hospital?

This (the original Alta Bates on Ashby in Berkeley) once was a great hospital. Im assuming that that is why the greedheads at Shutter are using it as the brand for many of (all?) their facilities in the east bay. My 86 year old mother went to the ER recently; the doctor called and said words to the effect that she should be admitted but she didnt test positive for anything that allowed him to admit her. She went back the next day, was admitted (a more reasonable doctor saying roughly, Ill just test her until I can get it past the apparatchiks). Urinary tract infection. In 6 days, despite repeated promises, I never saw or spoke to an MD (I cant get there at 8:00 am for rounds). Her records were bungled. Most of the staff didnt know she had Alzheimers--important because she cant follow directions and because medication sensitivities and recovery times are affected. An MD friend told me that of all the Bay Area medical facilities, Shutter is the worst for lucre-driven, Kafkaesque nightmares. They booted her out with no notice on Christmas day. She had three new prescriptions and their pharmacy was closed--nearest open one we found was in Concord). The doctor had ordered a hospital bed--try getting one delivered on Christmas day. A horror show.

Avoid at all cost if you have an emergency . When you enter the emergency room you are greeted by security guards who have no control over when you’re seen you have no option to speak to a nurse . When you’re finally taken into triage you will wait over half an hour for someone to even check on you . The staff operates with such a sense of neglect and lacks any sense of urgency . I saw the nurses laughing at a patient in pain and rolling their eyes at a patient begging for help. If you have any life threatening emergency you will die here.

Poor experience. They suck. And didnt offer dinner or breakfast. I was staying with my grandma and no one offered a blanket or pillow or somewhere to sleep. So i stayed up all night and couldnt sleep.

In 2018 my daughter was born in this hospital. I really loved it. The care was super good and I am pregnant again obviously my other baby will be born in this same hospital.

A super good attention if you need a translator they offer it to you so that you understand better the nurses are very friendly and in my experience very good humanitarian treatment and they feel affection in the work of the people who work thank you very much work and delivery team my baby and I know we appreciate it !!!

It is a super special experience, I just had my baby and they gave me excellent care from the first day until the last day I was there, which was 8 days, my baby is still in NICU and I can be at peace in my house because they have taken care of it super excellent thank you very much to Dr. Pediatra Espinoza and her team and Dr. Arzou and her team God bless you greatly for everything you do for us to feel our best, the nurses are very professional and very kind love They have for us as patients but my respects for those of the NICU, excellent service and very attentive social worker never refused any help or consultation. Thank you very much to all the team of high bates hospital 👏👏👏😊😊😊
