The REI in Bends Old Mill District occupies the historic power house with its iconic triple smoke stacks. Not the largest REI, but well stocked with good varieties of outdoor gear, knowledgeable staff, and excellent bike technicians. REI supports many sport and conservation events, and hosts classes for members... a dedicated community partner.

A previous review noted this wasnt a very big store but I was rather impressed with the size and selection. Its obviously not their flagship but there were plenty of options for each item within the various sections.there are a lot of different options for outdoors equipment in the bend area but if youre used to buying things at REI and thats the type of product and service youre looking for then I recommend this store and any of the others within the chain.

The curly haired kid that sells shoes here is one of the best salesmen I have ever experienced. Someone get that kid a raise!!! I wish I could remember his name but compared to any of the other sales people he was like a god level salesmenand super detailed when selling me my shoes. And I own several companies and would love to hire him for my sales departments. Lol. Also the kid that works on the bikes helped me out finding a good bike for me, very professional. This place is just all around great with an amazing staff and the prices are decent.

There are always a million friendly employees just waiting around to help you. If youre not familiar with REI they only sell serious high quality outdoor gear and their store brand is good. This is a large, 2 story REI which happens to be the most iconic/recognizable building in Bend. Pretty much appropriate for a town that is basically like if REI designed a town.

This is the worst REI location of them all. I had another horrible experience here this weekend. Jesse, cashier, refused to give me cash or put my refund of a $400 tent, with tags and a receipt, on my new debit card. He said he could only put it back on the card which I used to purchase it, which I informed him was stolen. When I questioned him about this policy, he said, they dont pay me enough to deal with this stuff. Absolutely horrible customer service. Ive never been treated so poorly by an employee of this organization. Pathetic

Very kind and knowledgable employees. My only real gripe is it can feel that they dont have a variety of items per category to choose from. Its fine. Just spendy, with the price attitude of it all, it works out really well for Bend. Its one of those love-hate things. I really wish they would fix the whole thing of “go inside that store and get bombarded with employees asking if you need help”. I do some outdoor sports on the professional level I’d say biyearly. It’s funny when you go in there and you know everything about the sport yet the employees try to tell you everything wrong about the sport or what you’re trying to buy. It’s kinda like one of those blank stare things, where you just nod and say OK man I don’t feel like explaining this to you so I’m just gonna walk away and say Namaste bit** haha

I made a visit today at Bend REI around noon. I usually love to go to this place , but today I was very disappointed at the experience. I know we have rules on how we are to interact in businesses these days. But, when I walked up one of the flights of stairs today the wrong way, an honest mistake, I did not see the song. One of the REI employee, said to me “ next time you need to go the right way up the stairs “ Are you kidding , I was so disgusted by how see talked to me. There are right ways to make someone aware of their mistake , and that was very wrong. I will not be back in REI Bend ever again!

Member since 2012, things are always very smooth here. Recently though, bought a backpack that had a manufacturer defect. REI replaced it, and the second bag had the same defect. REI replaced it again, but this time I was in a hurry and bought a womens pack (it had nice colors). REI replaced it again! Amy in camping made sure I wasnt leaving the store without the perfect pack.Point being: doing business with anyone for most of a decade will bring the occasional hiccup. Normally I’m a pretty big fan of this location, but their handling of CoVid stuff, while thorough, is sub-par in the customer service department. I had a return and was excited to browse around and spend that money on something else, but they didn’t have a returns/customer service desk open, so basically I have to wait in a line outside for 15 minutes, then wait in a line inside for 15 minutes, then look around for 20 minutes and if I find anything I have to wait in a line inside again for 15 minutes. An hour later and all the joy of coming to REI has been sucked out of the experience. I’d just skip it for now, honestly.

I love this store, so naturally when my wife needed ski boots we came to REI. I snowboard, so I know absolutely nothing about skiing or their boots. We spent an hour with one of the REI employees getting my wife fit for her first pair of ski boots in 20 years. The employee didnt seem very interested in helping us, but we still decided to trust him when he told us that we had found a pair of boots that fit her well. Once we hit the mountain my wife would always complain of terrible calf pain. I naturally dismissed this, assuming her pain was due to her being rusty at skiing. I could only drag my wife up to the mountain a few times last season because she said she hurt too bad. This year we started skiing again and she was experiencing the same pain. We decided to stop in and see the boot fitting people at Mt. Bachelor because we had heard they were really good. After a quick sit down with them they found that she was wearing a boot that was 1.5 sizes too big and it was too wide as well. We decided to purchase new boots from Mt. Bachelor and her pain went away the first day. We then returned to REI in hopes of getting a refund despite being outside of their 1 year return window since their employee had sized my wife incorrectly. We were unfortunately told that they only allow a year for returns no matter the circumstance. I still love this store, but I would not go in for ski related equipment without knowing exactly what you want/need. I did give them a 2 star rating because the boots we got did seem to be really good quality... just the wrong fit/size entirely.

I walked in this morning looking for a few things and had a backpack with me (from REI) that I had been using for work but it wasn’t quite cutting it. I saw a backpack that was better suited for me and the woman at the counter was super helpful and patient with me returning the old pack (through the REI guarantee return policy) and getting the new one. I had a bunch of stuff in the old one and she was so patient and kind as I transferred my stuff to the new pack and also double checked for me to make sure there was nothing I missed when I gave her my old one. All while there was a line of people behind us. Thank you so much, the patience and helpfulness of REI is always a thing I look forward. Not being rushed in that situation was the best start to my morning.

I have typically had good experiences at the REI back home. THIS REI, however, was terrible. I told a sales associate that I like to cross country ski (classical and skate) and that I might be in the market for a set since it has been a while. In other words, all I wanted to know was the price of some cross country skis. This seemingly simple question was apparently interpreted as, I am a complete idiot and I dont know anything about anything, because thats how I was treated. This lady talked DOWN to me for a good 15-20 minutes. And she really put in the effort to make me feel like a total imbecile because I mentioned I use my skate ski boots in my classical skis. Even after I tried to explain TWICE that I almost EXCLUSIVELY skate ski and I spend a very limited amount of time (about two hours of an entire season) in my classical skis AND that I have never had ANY problem with my feet or my boots or my skis. This apparently meant nothing to her and only served to prolong the onslaught of perceived ineptitude as she went on a very lengthy rant about how I was ruining my feet and my boots. Keep in mind, I NEVER EVEN ASKED ABOUT BOOTS. Long story short, I left the store feeling small and VERY upset. I will NOT be going back to the Bend REI. That is, unless I sadistically WANT someone to make me feel like an utter moron.

Still great customer service, but dont understand the outrageous prices for foreign-made goods. As a long-time member (since the early 70s), it just bothers the hell out of me that they have essentially become Eddie Bauer (also an outdoor store that lost its way) with technical gear thrown in.I purchase American-made clothes and gear online or in secondhand stores, and pay no more than some Indonesian-manufactured undershirt seems to cost new at REI.Its a damned shame. I have a huge amount of loyalty to REI. I want them to be better, a better American company. They do so much right as a company, I just wish they would fix this glaring weakness in their purchasing.
