February 13, 2016I first met Dr. Mark Applefeld in mid-May of 2009. A stress test had indicated that there might be a blockage in a coronary artery. That test result and a family history of heart disease certainly had my attention at that point. I was worried and concerned to say the least. After an examination by Dr. Applefeld, we began the process of scheduling a cardiac catheterization for the next morning. He is kind man. He knows his fellow physicians and their skill sets that are so important in the complete care of a patient. That morning, he asked my preference of hospital for the procedure to occur the following morning. We decided the procedure would be done at Union Memorial with Dr.John Wang. I felt comfortable and secure in his recommendation. I left Union after the requisite not-quite-a 24 hour stay, and a 3 mm x 24 mm stent in my left anterior descending artery.I have seen Dr. Applefeld every 6 months since. He prepared me for more possible blockages to be discovered. He counseled me regularly (and still does) as to best care for myself, I was frustrated at times because I just could not seem to get my numbers where he wanted them to be. I kept at it though, with his encouragement. His kindness is so powerful and I know I am in good hands. My numbers are finally in good shape, and I have had not been back to the cath lab. I plan to do everything I can not to.Dr. Applefeld is phenomenal physician and an amazing clinician. His diagnostic skills are simply the best. He is able to hear far more with a stethoscope than most - if not all these days. He listens, he counsels. He cares for his patients. He will call - yes, on an actual telephone, if test results are concerning. He calls with the good news as well. Dr. Applefeld encourages patients to call him as well - if something does not seem right, let him help figure it out. He knows the best people to recommend for the various coronary issues - whether it is the cardiac cath lab or cardiac surgery - whoever you might need.Wonderful Clinical Physician- wonderful kind and caring man. I hope there are more out there just like Dr. Mark Applefeld.
