I went to Dr. Wilmer for the first, and only times, back in September 2020 to ensure my heart is still in check due to some unexpected flare-ups of my chronic issue. Both times I went there, he was incredibly delayed for the appointment. The first time was passable as he had an important phone call to answer, but on the follow-up appointment I was waiting for over an hour just for him to come in, look at my charts, and confirm what I already knew. During both appointments he had the tendency to mansplain (and I dont like to use that word, but couldnt think of a different descriptor) to me about how to handle a condition Ive known I had and handled well since 2016. I kept trying to tell him that I was already aware of the specifics of my condition, I just wanted to make sure everything with my heart was still OK because of the flareups, but it seemed he didnt hear me.The biggest reason Im writing this review, however, is on that second appointment and once I got the official clean bill of health from him, he randomly asked me what my goal weight was as I was about to walk out the door. I was a bit shocked and thrown off guard as this was not at all what the appointment was about and it had seemed like the appointment was over. I told him about five pounds less than I am currently, and he told me how about you aim for at least 10 pounds lower - following up with how I should technically aim for 20 pounds lower but as some people are bigger boned, 10 pounds is acceptable. Now, Im a 57, 28 year old woman whose weight has been maintained in between 160-170 pounds since high school. I exercise for 2 hours a day, I eat pretty healthy, but my body just tends to hang out around that weight. Not that this is an acceptable thing for a doctor to say to any patient who got the official all clear and was walking out the door, but as Im a pretty healthy person and he knew my exercise habits especially, this felt quite out of left field for me.I clearly struggled with the idea of writing a review about this for awhile. Based on the online reviews, people seem to really like Dr. Wilmer. However, as someone who has struggled with body image issues my whole life, I cant imagine how Id feel if I had heard such a comment when I was younger and more susceptible to criticism about my weight. So for those of you who are not stick thin, and/or who have struggled through eating disorders or body dysmorphia, Id suggest steering clear of Dr. Wilmer. I feel pretty confident in my body these days and still am now haunted by his words pushing me to lose 10-20 pounds.

Dr Wilmer was a very informative and thorough doctor. He listened to my concerns, asked me questions, gave his medical opinions, based on his professional knowledge, and also included me in the final decision. It was a breathe of fresh air to not be dealing with a highly regarded specialist who did not feel the need to be arrogant.

I have been under the care of Dr. Wilmer for many years. He is one of the absolute finest doctors I have ever encountered, regardless of area of expertise. Among other episodes, in 2011, he arranged for and supervised then-cutting edge open heart surgery done by a thoracic surgeon in New York to repair my mitral valve and tricuspid valves - very successful outcome. In more recent times, he was at the controls of the cardioversion machine that got my sinus rhythm going again when I was in atrial fibrillation; he pulsed me twice with just the right amount of energy to make that happen, perfect touch. He treated my wife successfully when she suffered a flap in her right anterior descending artery, and prescribed a perfect course of treatment for success. I have sent many friends and family to him over the years, because I completely trust his advice and I know that he really cares about his patients. And because I am totally comfortable that in Dr. Wilmers hands, they will receive the finest care possible. He earns the highest level of recommendation in my view, and he does it every day.
