Great doctors and staff until you get hospitalized at Clifton Rd. Total breakdown in care! My wife was a Winship patents for three months due to stage 4 lung cancer . She suffered respiratory failure and dropping O2 after seven hours in ER waiting room and then in a room ; until I started yelling for help no nurse and no doctor to responding. CT scan that night showed worsening of masses and pneumonia. Solution - one week in hospital with all cancer medication withdrawn. When I asked Dr. Wu, the oncologist on a cancer floor what the treatment plan was -she said there was no plan B and to wait until regular appointment with treating oncologist in two weeks. Said her only concern as the Winship oncologist was getting the pneumonia under control but not the underlying cancer! Same thing after a bronchoscopy was done. Results?- wait two weeks. The treating doctor was right in the next building all of that week and could not come over or consult. What kind of treatment is that?Social worker on floor quit or disappeared from floor after two days so a lot of my wifes questions could not be answered on a floor with many terminally ill patients!

Please don’t waste your time or money coming to this hospital hoping to win your cancer battle. My husband wasted almost 2 years of his life dealing with non-caring doctors who were completely neglectful and incompetent. There are so many examples I could give to describe how the oncology, radiology, and dermatology teams all failed my husband but that would be too painful and frustrating to revisit. I will say that our final straw with this hospital was finding out that they LIED about a treatment option, claiming it wasn’t an available option.A bone marrow transplant is the only known treatment that could potentially cure my husband’s condition. After his initial testing, he was told that he had zero matches in the donor database. Completely frustrated with his care, we sought out a 2nd opinion through Cancer Treatment Centers of Americans. During his evaluation with them, we found out he had 13 potential donor matches in the database. In fact, they feel he could undergo the transplant in the next 4-6 months. Of course we were ecstatic to hear the news but also completely frustrated and vexed to find out Emory had deliberately lied about the option being unavailable. This is a national database that doctors across facilities use; there’s no way this was a coincidence.I’ll never forget at our first appointment at Winship with Dr. Lechowicz my husband was told “We’ve confirmed you have this condition and there’s no cure for it.” At our 1st appointment at CTCA our hematologist shook my husband’s hand and told him “We have a plan and we’re going to get you better. Don’t worry.” He even gave us his work cell number so we could reach him in emergencies or if we had lingering questions later.I thank God daily for helping us find a new care team comprised of compassionate people where the goal is to have their patients heal and move on from cancer. I’m confident if we stayed with Emory my husband would have been receiving continual treatments for the rest of his life and he was only 31 when diagnosed. At least now we have a chance at a normal life. We finally see having children and growing old together as an option again and that’s all thanks to CTCA.So again, please don’t waste your time with this hospital if you’re serious about beating cancer and getting your life back!

The doctors are excellent. There is, however, a serious breakdown of communication from doctor ➡️ staff ➡️ patient. This further stresses and frustrates and confuses the patient. What cancer patient, or any patient, needs more of that!?!? Surely there are practices out there that are better run than these. God help us if not!

Dr. Victor Orellana is the most un professional doctor I’ve ever came across. He doesn’t allow you to ask any questions or to even talk , I feel like he feels like he’s above everyone. Anytime you call him out on a mistake that he has made and realizes it he then tries to talk over you. My father was there at the hospital expressing his concerns about his refusal to provide a follow up scan to see if the radiation treatment helped my mother, once I asked They stated there was nothing they can do which is odd considering that when they did the scan before the radiation a lot of the lymphoma cancer spots were gone , so obviously the chemotherapy is working. I feel like my family is being neglected. and even got security guards multiple times to harass my dad into signing a form that states that he wouldn’t get involved with the care of my mother that has lymphoma. He then states that my father was being aggressive because of my fathers hand gestures and loud voice but I explained to him that we are Cuban and it’s in our culture , it’s how we communicate that my father was not being aggressive and then Dr. Victor Orellana stated that “all Hispanics are the same and that he was being aggressive” I then stated to Dr. Victor Orellana that he was making a discriminatory statement towards me , he then got upset and started talking over me and wouldn’t let me finish what I had to say , and called security yet again to remove my father from the hospital property , I then asked for a phone number to file a complaint which he said we would provide it in which he never did , when I asked a second and a third time he decided to ignore me. My mother has even been left without eating until 6pm, I will not be silenced , something needs to be done about this situation and I won’t have my mother treated like she’s a dog and neglected . I also feel like they were pushing hospice way too much before even doing a follow up scan after her chemotherapy. If you or a loved one are diagnosed with cancer stay far far away from this place.

Winship sets the standards for oncology treatment in Atlanta. Studies consistently show treatment in academic based research hospitals improves outcomes. The new facility provides comfort, and the physicians are excellent. In my experience, receiving treatment here has been a nightmare. Despite an excellent nursing staff and reception desk, my oncologist there is evil. Her subtle way of brushing off/downplaying my symptoms can only be described as gaslighting. Either her ego has blinded her from the possbility her treatment strategy has failed, or she is intentionally trying to stress me out and induce a relapse so she can get more data for her research. Cancer sucks but the cancer treatment industry sucks way worse.

To say that I was unimpressed and disappointed with my experience at Winship is an understatement. Sadly, both of my parents fell ill with highly aggressive cancers. My father lived in Miami, and we enrolled him in a clinical trial at MD Anderson. Although MD Anderson was by no means perfect, it certainly gave me the view of what is considered a top notch hospital. When my mom fell ill, we started her treatment at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. Moffitt was less known and much smaller, and I worried it was going to fall short of reasonable expectations. Boy, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Moffitt knows how to treat patients, medically, empathically, and with provision of resources. I live in the Atlanta area, so when it came time for my mom to move here, we thought we’d have a great experience at Winship, who touts themselves as being top notch. Let me list some of my complaints: 1) Our doctor focused more on unnecessary and repetitive chit chat (meaning, he told us the same stories and anecdotes in every appointment) than anything medical and treatment related. This was a far cry from our stellar doctor at Moffitt who came in to each appointment with a concise and clear explanation of my mom’s health status and next steps, all while showing genuine emotional concern. Our Winship doctor was so incompetent that he literally asked my medical opinion (I am not a doctor) as to whether we should my mother’s treatment based on the symptoms we reported rather than offer his own opinion. 2) At Moffitt, you get your blood work taken, and you have all your results INCLUDING tumor marker results within 30 minutes. At your doctor’s appt, you quickly find out whether you can get treatment that day. At Winship, you wait HOURS for these results in terribly uncomfortable waiting rooms where you’re packed like sardines, sometimes to find out that you can’t get treatment because your blood counts are too low. Also, the tumor marker test takes TWO TO THREE DAYS to come back, where Moffitt’s took 30 minutes. 3) Literally, the rudest nurses ever. I could write a novel on this one. The least of my complaints include how they wouldn’t greet us in the infusion bay, or how they’d disappear with no explanation for over an hour, or never offer to close the curtain (infusion 101), etc. 4) Inefficient and slow. Not only did blood work take forever, but it would take 7 hours for what takes 3 at Moffitt. Such a disappointment for a cancer patient feeling so ill that they just need to lay in bed. I could go on with complaints about parking, the lack of free valet for cancer patients, the patient portal, difficulty in making appts, on and on...but I’ll just stop here. I read many of the positive reviews and was honestly shocked and thinking that either people in another clinic were offered a very different experience, or these people can’t even imagine how a good cancer center like Moffitt operates. I actually believe moving my mother to Winship took time off her life. I’ll just say this, for people who are traveling to Atlanta for GI cancers and who have the means to travel to Tampa or other top notch centers, please consider it. If I ever get cancer, I WILL NOT go to Winship. I honestly feel Winship should be ashamed of the quality of their facility and their staff, and I hope they take this review seriously.

Wonderful facility and staff but the wait times are ridiculous for seeing the doctor and getting into infusion. Always about a 30 min to an hour plus wait for each area. Never on time. Then once in the infusion chair the patient has to wait another hour just to get chemo started. Something needs to be streamlined. Especially frustrating when my family member only needs a 10 min infusion. Takes with wait time in waiting room almost an hour then another hour wait in the chair for the drug. That’s almost a 2 hour wait ...for a 10 min infusion. Once every two weeks.

Their holistic team at Midtowns Winship Head and Neck Cancer center just beat back Stage 4a throat cancer of a loved one facing a lot ofdaunting complications. Their treatment plans are sound, and they really work well together in organic fashion, from radiation to nutrition to chemo to well being to therapy. The team members stayed in constant communication with each other, everyone was there in one clinic, which made the process much easier. There were bumps and twists in the process but they showed great flexibility and timeliness to jump in and adjust as needed, which also made the process a lot smoother. They gave full support and good communication with the patient caregiver as well. They get my highest recommendation if you find yourself, or a loved one, suddenly facing throat cancer.

My family member started treatment at Emory Universitys Winship Cancer Center. To say I have been disapointed with our experience is an understatement. We spent seven hours one day seeing three doctors as the doctors were running behind. The staff that greet you and answer phones are not well trained and spend more time chatting to one another than helping you. They do not seem to care or are not trained correctly. It is very frustrating dealing with them when you need help. Phone calls are not returned, drugs are not ordered as promised, and we are in a life or death situation. We have been waiting for two weeks for the chemo drug to be called into the pharmacy. We were told it was an oversight by a staff member. Really? There is no back-up individual to double check to make certain these kind of things do not happen?I always heard Winship was a top notch facility and am actually sad to realize it is not. Sad for the patients, for Atlanta, and of course, for my family.

This hospital is extremely unprofessional and lacks any sort of urgency or respect towards its patients. My mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and has had nothing but horrible experiences with the medical staff at this hospital. Her health has been at a constant decline ever since being treated here and the doctors have lacked any hope or compassion to help treat her appropriately. Weeks of unreturned calls regarding her care and medicine never prescribed that was promised. Do you have no regard for the well being of your patients? Do you understand that these are peoples lives at YOUR hands. If this was your family member I guarantee you would not be treating them the same way. Unacceptable and extremely disappointed. Strongly advise anyone considering this hospital to look elsewhere.

I am so glad that we transferred to Northsides Hematology department. The nightmare we went through on a monthly basis at Winship is not worth it! Dr Saiid (spelling?) is the most arrogant and unprofessional doctor there he. He isnt a hematology yet had the audacity to yell at and lecture my husband on why he wasnt seeing a hematologist more often than he was even after my husband politely explained that he and his doctor discussed and agreed upon what was his current plan of treatment. He continued to yell after my husbadn down the hall intimidating remarks as he walked out (all in front of other patients).Their clinical team (also a joke) with the assistance of Jim McKay, fixed the problem. They had the doctor correct this note that that date (back in September of 2017, yet the doctor wrote an incorrect diagnosis for my husbands heart condition that he also has which is not only a huge medical error, but it could also be considered medical negligence if my husband is ever in an emergent situation and treated incorrectly because of it.It is now 9 months later and we are still dealing with this mess trying to get it fixed and all we kept being told is, we will look into it and investigate as if that is supposed to mean anything. Patient relations had promised on numerous occasions to call back, yet they dont and end up just passing me around or coming up with an excuse of some kind, so if they comment on your complaint saying they want to look into it, dont put much weight in their words/promises. The only advocating the patient advocacy team does is for the doctors in this case to cover themselves. This is sad because other departments at Emory excel in patient care, but Winship just cares about you keeping quite when they mess up your orders and you try to do something to fix it.

These are the most unprofessional and unconcerned people in the medical community. My husband was recently hospitalized at Emory for rectal bleeding. It took them all day to come see him, and when they decided to he would have a colonoscopy, they waited until after his eating time, and they gave him that solution, which is filled with sodium. His blood pressure was already 210/100, thus he spent the night trying to drink all of the solution while having extreme anxiety about his elevated blood pressure. The next day when they finally decided to pick him up for the colonoscopy, they never once returned to talk to us about the results. The doctor spoke to him briefly right after he came out of sedation but said she would come to his room to talk to us. We waited all evening and kept asking the nurse when we could expect to hear from the doctor. Not one doctor ever showed up! This department treat their patients like cattle. Its all about the numbers - Get them in and get them out! Unfortunately for Emory, I have always believed in standing up for people who are not treated with dignity. This time its my husband!!

After several months of bi-weekly treatments of high dose methotrexate, retuxin and leukavorin I am able to resume my home life in Statesboro and travel to and from WCI for my treatments. I am seeing a bright light at the end of this struggle after being in and out of hospice twice with the wrong doctors here in Savannah and the incorrect diagnosis.

At the time of my diagnosis I was terrified and automatically took the diagnosis as a death sentence. I was informed that I had a 50 to 55% 5 year survival rate under the circumstances. I only asked that they tell me where to go, what to do and what time to be there and underwent full scale radiation treatment and chemo. That was now, 7 years ago and although I was left with some residual effects of radiation to the head/neck area, I cannot complain and feel as though I received near excellent handling throughout the entire almost 5 month journey.

Since my parents lived in Atlanta, I went home with my dad and 3 days later I saw a Neurologist at Emory that admitted me to Emory Midtown the same day. The next morning, I had surgery and Im going through therapy now in my hometown in SC, reunited with my son. AS EMORY UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL TAKES ON THE TWO EBOLA PATIENTS (our hearts and prayers are with them), ID LIKE TO SEND EMORY A SHOUT-OUT AND MY FOREVER THANKS FOR THEIR GROUND-BREAKING WORK AND EXTRAORDINARY PATIENT CARE. HERE ARE SOME OF MY NOTES WRITTEN DURING A VISIT WITH MY DAUGHTER GWYNETH AT THE INSTITUTES CANCER INFUSION CENTER:We have spent the last 2 days in the subterranean regions of Emory Hospitals Cancer Infusion Center -- the place where a few setbacks are patiently accepted in exchange for a few steps forward. We wait for reports, new orders from the lab, refreshed physician instructions, to have vital signs checked, and to greet what seems like an endless rotation of newly arriving patients who join our midst -- like eager guests arriving at a Chemotherapy banquet. The Infusion Center is a world onto itself with its own rules of engagement, and where hopes and fears, triumphs and setbacks, largely go unheralded in the world out there.Brief, but memorable, interactions occur in the waiting room that yield valuable advice, knowledge of new therapies, names of favorite physicians, and heartfelt good wishes. Many of these patients are very open to telling you their stories of fear, hope and sometimes quiet heroism. Many of their stories are about personal triumphs that truly reside within the realm of miracles. We accept the love and encouragement from the caring nurses and support staff with a fierce gratefulness that sometimes defies reasonable hope. We eagerly accept with great fondness the attentions of these caregivers -- many of whom are, themselves, cancer survivors. They offer words of advice and encouragement that emanate from a very wise and visceral place, that are calibrated with almost scientific precision to relate to just what you are experiencing and what you need to know. These caregivers always seem to have the energy to go above and beyond the usual call of duty, as witnessed by everyday heroic deeds (quick clinical observations followed by life saving medical intervention); and personal sacrifice (coming in early and leaving late; half eaten sandwiches at lunchtime).Despite the obvious connections to other worlds and ways of being, this is a place where those of us who temporarily dwell here (either as patients or family members), experience, explore and extract from each moment an acknowledgement that there is a delicate and mysterious equilibrium that exists between life and death...and there are carefully calibrated codes of conduct that exist as a result of this reality. Kindness rules! I witness, with emotion, the warm hugs offered to Gwyneth from the many caregivers who have come to know and love her over the past eight years of her Cancer journey. Sometimes there are even a few hugs for me as Gwyneths mom (it feels like celebratory status by association).I also greatly admire the family members who sit dutifully beside their kin or friend -- sometimes over many hours -- reminiscing about family lore, reading to them, offering jokes, running to the cafeteria for refreshments and talking about everything under the sun. They are here for the long haul; and they are an incredible inspiration to us who are, on one level, total strangers and yet who, from forced association, have instantly become family. We share something priceless and irreplaceable. Despite the fact we are in a place we would not have willingly chosen in a million years, we are here in full presence of mind and heart to give what we can to our loved ones.Sadly, Gwyneth lost her battle with cancer on March 9 of this year. Thank you Winship for your expert and loving care over the past 8 1/2 years. Jill Burrows of Cambridge, MA.

My family member is beginning treatment at Emory Universitys Winship Cancer Center. The doctor is very good and her nurse as well. Very detailed and experienced. I am troubled by the staff who answer the phones etc. Its hit or miss with them. They are not properly trained and tend to get defensive when stretched beyond their script. We have only been dealing with them the past few weeks and already I am frustrated. Major test results are taking two painfully long weeks and because the doctor is on vacation, no one seems to be able to give an answer. The frustration level is rising even more as you can imagine. If thats isnt enough, we got a call stating that she was scheduled to see a pulmonologist - at the same time she is scheduled for her first infusion. We have not been told the reason she needs to see a pulmonologist. I am having some serious regrets. The doctor, her nurse and some of the staff are good, but the support outside of that office leaves much to be desired. I hope they plan to fix this customer non-service piece or find a better trained call-center with folks who leave their attitudes at home.

My mother went in for joint pain, and was diagnosed with acute kidney failure and multiple myeloma. Was told that she could expect a full recovery after attending a trial, after two rounds of chemo and dialysis three times a week, my mother ultimately died of starvation. Despite my repeated cries for help, early on, they refused to give her a feeding tube. In a matter of 5 months, she dropped 100 pounds and no one cared. She died and I received no condolences from anyone at Emory clinic, nor Emory dialysis despite our time that was spent together during this horrible time. After her results werent favorable enough to be counted in the trial, she was thrown away like yesterdays trash. I guess grant money is more important. Winship can look very forward to me being as vocal as possible, to anyone thatll listen!

I cannot say enough good things about Winship Cancer Center. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013. I went to one of the well-know breast care centers in Atlanta, which was a big mistake. I chose Dr. OReagan as my oncologist from a list my surgeon gave to me. She soon left for another position and Im now seeing Dr. Jane Meisel. I love her! She is thoughtful and present, i.e. she takes the time to be mindful of explaining ones options clearly (including possible side effects and outcomes) without any pressure; empathetic; and, as she went to Harvard, highly well-trained and intelligent. I have chronic pain from my surgery and when I was seeing Dr. OReagan, she referred me to a plastic surgeon (whose name escapes me) at Emory. He, too, was compassionate and informed me of all options and possible outcomes. I have never felt like a number at Winship, but a patient. I wish Id gone to the Center immediately after I was diagnosed.

A once-in-a-lifetime coincidence! The alliance of Winship and President Carter, both proven as world champion progressives, and now allied:[1] to gain for us all perhaps a decade or two more of Jimmys and Rosalyns labors of love; and[2] to help them both to learn about, and spread the good word about, an old old truth that we modern medics have long long ago opted to forget:Most tumors contain massive amounts of acid loving fungus -- fungus that grows on all forms of sugars, and shrinks as we abstain more and more from consuming sugars, and shrinks vastly quicker as we consume 2 to 8 quarter teaspoons of acid neutralizing baking soda per day.Hey, cant hurt, right? And might help, right? And along with a nearly 100% green green green veggie diet, with eggs and nuts and seeds instead of meats, AND NO DAIRY, and generous doses of the fresh wheat grass juice that our immune systems love, and along with following the below advice***, Winship just might save our blessed Jimmys happy life by the very same forward thinking that saved my wifes life.*** [Advice from our North Woods very own W.T. Johnson, circa 1882] Eat like a rabbit, and exercise like a rabbit, but DONT do romance like a rabbit. Many thanks to Winship -- for life saving help to us in the past, and for all of your progressive ways in the future.Tikkun OlamRen Thelp, Frank Johnson, and Slim Pickins

Its a comedy of errors with my husbands life. We went down in Oct, met with a surgical doctor and an oncologist, all was good. Went for two treatments of a new trial in Snellville. Another petscan was done in early Dec. We didnt hear from anyone the Dr in Snellville called down and was told they never received the scan. WE drove it down Jan 5th. HAND CARRIED it to the receptionist on their floor, per there instructions. Still no response. Husband called and made a Dr appt. Day before DR appt we got a call asking us to get a copy of the scan and send it down. NO we took and handed it to the Dr at our appt on 1/21. Was told we would receive a call Wed night at the latest. Nothing. . Finally a call back saying it had been to long from the petscan and he needed another. So we get to pay again due to their mix up???? Then we were told they would call on Monday 2/1 to schedule the scan. We received the scan back from them (the one 1/5) that they never received. We called again Monday afternoon. Finally nurse called back and had no idea what petscan needed to be scheduled.....You cant even get a person to complain to. We are checking out other avenues. This is there job, and my husbands life. He was diagnosed with aggressive nodular melanoma and all this time has been lost, because of them.
