Great place to climb, but gets too packed during the weekdays. If you have a membership its nearly impossible to find an open session in the evenings during the weekday unless you book 2-3 weeks in advance. The only open sessions are usually early morning or weekend sessions. Great place to climb but difficult to go to if youre looking to go daily

Really good climbing gym, it has a very large selection of routes that are set very well. They do require that climbers have belay training, even if you are just bouldering, which is definitely an inconvenience for anyone who doesnt know how to belay.

I havent been to many rock gyms but of the few I have, this one was the nicest. Friendly and helpful staff and clean facility. Plenty of options for climbing making it a nice place for climbers of all ages and skill levels. You do have to have a tie in/belay class, or test out of it, before you can climb by yourself or with your kids.

Routes are creative, but dirty. This review is about management rather than the gym itself.Management turns away walk-ins (with signs), based solely on signups (not actual capacity). A signup does not necessarily mean they will attend. Last night, about 70 out of 125 people who signed up, showed up. That reflects a 56% attendance rate for people who sign up.Madison Heights figured this out months ago. Eliminate the we-dont-want-you-here signs and allow walkins up to ACTUAL capacity. Its OUR gym. Dont treat us like chattel.

The gym itself is nice, they do a nice job of changing out routes and everything is well maintained. Now, like many climbing gyms, they charge a $50 new member fee for new monthly members. But if you need to take a few months off (say, you need to leave for the summer...college town and all), you have to notify them 30 days in advance of your last payment (so, effectively, 60 days prior to when you actually want to stop climbing) and then, when you join back again said few months later, they are kind enough to charge you the new member fee AGAIN! What possible purpose could justify this new member fee? What costs are they incurring in allowing you to rejoin less than 3 months after you left? They dont say.In a college town, this is nothing short of bilking college students out of money. This company should be ashamed of itself.

Review №52

Good place to climb in the area, prices are fairly average. Does get busy during the evenings, so Id advise going at earlier times if you want to get a lot of climbing in.The reason I only rate 2 stars is that when it gets busy, the amount of people bouldering kicks up a lot of the chalk dust (from hands clapping, people jumping down onto the mats) into the air, so much so that entering the area from the main lobby you can visibly see the chalk haze. I didnt think it was too bad until I realized 30min in that I felt it was difficult to breathe. Left the area and got some clean air and instantly felt 10x better, but was coughing up that chalk dust for the rest of the night. There definitely needs to be at minimum some sort of ventilation in there to cycle the air (even some box fans will do), but air filters would also be great. I dont plan on ever bouldering during busy times here again purely due to the health hazard it poses.

Thank you PR staff! My son recently turned 14 and was eager to learn to belay. After completing the training and successfully serving as my belay, we returned for another visit today. He was a little nervous, and made an error in his technique, just as I slipped from the wall, causing me to fall several feet to the floor. PR staff responded immediately, assessing my well being and making sure he had the appropriate training and skill set. He was really shook up, and the staff member (Casey, I think) quickly reassessed and allowed me to give my son redirection. She stepped back, and 2 other staff members stepped up, standing quietly nearby, so I could see they were there to monitor my son’s technique without being so close that he felt incompetent. My son then was able to successfully belay me, and he was unaware they were monitoring him so closely until they gave him kudos for a successful belay. I was so impressed that they handled the situation in a way that didn’t crush his confidence, but ensured that I was safe. Thank you Planet Rock for promoting safety and not crushing a young learner’s confidence!

I started climbing here the last year of college (early spring of 17) and fell in love with the sport. Since then I have been to 11 other gyms across the country, but mostly the mid-west. Every time I go to a new gym I end up finding a reason to like this gym more. The staff is always happy to help with any questions ranging from beta on a problem to finding the right pair of shoes to places to go climbing outdoors. On top of that the gear shop has had everything that I have needed so far and can probably order it on the off chance they dont have something. As far as route setting goes, a new bouldering set (10-15 problems) goes up about every week and there is usually a new set for ropes (5-10 routes) in about the same time frame. If not a whole set, at least a couple new routes a week. The routes themselves are usually pretty diverse in style and are always fun and challenging. They also do a good job with the classes they offer. I cant say too much about all of them because I havent taken them all, but the lead class and beginners class are both great. I assume the same is true for the others.Overall I would highly recommend it to anyone at any level. If you are brand new they will take care of you and make sure you know what you are doing to stay safe and you still have a blast. If you are a seasoned climber there are plenty of challenging routes and strong people to climb with.

Planet rock has some 60 foot walls so its a bit more extreme. They also have a lot of space dedicated to free climbing where the highest youll get is between twelve and fifteen feet. The second time I went we only did free climbing and this was a blast I have more fun free climbing than I do when I climb with ropes. I highly suggest coming here if you enjoy adventurous activities.

I started climbing at this gym many years ago, and have always have a good experience. The facility is as clean as possible, which is amazing considering almost everyone has an open bag of chalk. The staff has always been friendly and knowledgeable. Theyre almost always busy at the gym, so be patient and wait your turn! They only way I was comfortable transitioning to outdoor climbing was because of all of the answers they were able to provide to me. They have a good gear selection, and price match, but it isnt always easy to get items, depending on the time of year. However, any time Ive dealt with their sales staff to purchase gear, I never felt they were just trying to sell me the most expensive items. They listened to what I was looking for, and helped find the gear to match my needs the best. The routes at the gym have a good variety, and they have bouldering, top rope, lead climbing, and auto-belays to choose from. Id say about once a week or every other week they close off a small section and put up new routes, so theres always something new to try.

This is a very nice facility. I am a new climber and am very happy with the wide variety of bouldering routes that are at my level. This climbing gym continues to get worse every time I go. The staff provides zero service and will more often ignore me than respond to me. The air is so full of chalk - with zero ventilation - that Im probably getting lung cancer. It has become incredibly crowded, to the point where most of the time Im actually waiting in line rather than climbing. And to make the lines worse half the time some portion of the gym is closed off to the public and reserved specifically for The Team, even though I pay for a VERY EXPENSIVE membership. Oh, and good luck finding parking. If you want to pay a LOT of $$$ to wait in lines and breathe in excessive amounts of chalk, this is your place. If you want to climb, good luck.

I used to be a member before moving out of the area and it pains me to write a critical review of a gym that introduced me to climbing and has been the source of so many positive memories. Visited twice in the last week, and noticed multiple issues that shouldnt exist in a gym of this caliber. The boulder problems have been up for so long that all of the holds are greasy and covered in shoe rubber. A lot of problems either werent graded, or the grade had rubbed off the tape it was written on.We found multiple top ropes with significant flat spots and areas where the sheath had disconnected from the core - when we told a staff member, they checked the rope, confirmed what we found, and shrugged saying it wasnt a big deal as we werent leading on the rope. Also, Im not a fan of their new policy that climbers are not allowed to be boulder only and instead have to pass a belay test simply to enter the gym. Ive never seen that in any other gym before and dont understand the need for such a policy.Still a good gym, but I would like to see improvements made if I were ever to commit to a membership again.

Planet Rock is a Great Facility. I have been going here to the Ann Arbor area since I was very young and keep coming back. I am now part of a climbing club from my university and we go to both facilities at least 20+ times a year. The staff is very helpful and willing to give any advice when I have a question on a route or about a set up. The prices are kind of high but that doesnt stop me from coming back during my down time from school. Also, having a little business background, I know how difficult it is to keep such a great facility clean and safe. The bathrooms/locker rooms are kept very clean and they have a ton of cubbies for people to put their stuff. They also have a little coffee shop inside which is nice to have nearby when on a break from climbing.I can say this. That personally, I have a great appreciation for those who keep this facility clean and safe and, as long as I live in the area I will always be going to Planet Rock because of the great atmosphere and awesome people I have met.
