They don’t follow their own stated COVID procedures. When making an appointment I was told that stylists would wear masks if social distancing wasn’t possible and that they would ask if I’d like them to wear a mask if they saw I was wearing one. Despite the tiny salon being packed, several stylists did not wear masks and despite me wearing a mask my stylist (MacKenzie) did not ask if I would like her to wear one.I also received one of the worst haircuts I’ve had and felt like MacKenzie didn’t listen to what I was asking for, but I’ll chalk at least some of that up to poor communication on my part.

Ive always wanted to do something wild with my hair, and the prospect of dying has both seemed really exciting and nerve-racking. Im SO happy I came in. Fantastic staff that go out of their way and take the extra mile to give you the best experience possible. Answered all of my questions and more, I feel confident I can maintain this! Stephanie was so kind and we had great conversations, and soon enough I was finished and I couldnt be happier. Thanks again!!

I was in town for a wedding and as a treat scheduled to get my make up done. I will admit that I cant see well without glasses or contacts so I did not say anything specific to the provider as I didnt notice, and think more about it, until I returned to my room. The foundation was heavy on a 90 degree day and settled in any fine lines as no primer was used. My eyes had dark circles and the lipstick wasnt lined. I felt that I could have done better myself. Very disappointing particularly for the cost.

I went to Douglas J after I got a terrible balayage done somewhere else. They were able to schedule me for an appointment that same week. Ali G took care of me and she rescued my hair. She made sure I was happy with the results in every part of the process and made me feel like myself again. Her balayage work is beautiful! I will def recommend her. I went in to get my hair from its natural medium/dark brown to blonde, and I was not disappointed! The appointment started right on time. I saw Caitlin, and she did an AMAZING job! My hair still feels really healthy considering how much it was bleached yesterday, and I LOVE the color she got it to! It was exactly what I wanted! She also included a shadow root so that it doesnt look bad as my hair grows out and my natural color comes back in. She trimmed it up afterwards, and it is PERFECT!!! I cannot say enough about how wonderful my experience with her was!!!

I called to ask before I made appointment at the Ann Arbor Douglas J salon . Neither COVID vaccination nor masking is required of staff at the salon. Masking of customers at required. They need to get with the times. At the very least, there should be mandatory masking. I will not enter a business that does not have, at least, mandatory masking in this time if COVID Delta surge. They are close to University of Michigan campus that requires vaccine AND masking of all students, employees & contractors. Anyone else entering campus must be masked. This should be the norm.

Great haircut and bliw dry with Alyssa. She is great. Made sure I was completely happy. Would highly recommend.

They were so awesome and got us out of a pinch when my teenager thought she could cut her own hair 😆

EDIT: could not reach the manager who commented below.Went for an easy dye job - just some blue and purple dye. Stylist messed up my hair the first time so it came out green, and dyed much less hair than I wanted too. Then did a do-over for free (which was nice) but messed it up again where the blue was so dark it looked black. Now, 2 months later, my hair still looks BLACK and the purple has already faded out. So disappointed, I paid $200 for this??I even went back to try and get it corrected, and they said it would count as a whole new dye job (so another $200?)

I went to the Aveda Salon in Ann Arbor 2weeks ago, right after graduating from Douglas J! I was so excited to be done with school, and wanted to look great for the celebration dinner my boyfriend planned for me. I made a same day appointment, and I was placed with Ashley. She’s new to the salon as she just recently finished her program at Douglas J as well. Ashley was awesome from start to finish, very professional. Extremely diligent, especially in making sure she was providing me a service to meet my exact needs. We discussed everything before she did it, she was very informative, and the things she didn’t know, she found out about to make sure I was educated prior to leaving the salon. I received the botanical damage treatment, and it was amazing! She did a blow out which has become my favorite style to say the least, then she gave me some really girly curly curls! I loved it! I’ll definitely be going to see Ashley at least once a month! Most def worth the drive! Not to mention she handled my 4c hair with care and prestige!!! Thanks Ashley!!! You’ve got a client for as long as you stay in Michigan!!!

I just had a wonderful haircut with Cam today. She was super caring and asked a lot of detailed questions to make sure that I was getting precisely what I wanted with my hairstyle, yet was not afraid to put in her own professional advice for me. I love how it turned out, and I look forward to seeing her next month for my coloring!

Excellent procedures in place that made me feel very safe and comfortable during my visit. These included hand sanitizing and temperature check at door, 10 feet of physical distance between chairs, plastic barriers between hair washing stations and sanitizing them after each client and all employees and customers being required to wear masks. One customer walked in without a mask and was not allowed to enter.

I called and was able to get in for a haircut with really short notice. My stylist Stephanie did an amazing job on my hair. I showed her a picture for reference and she nailed it! I’ve never been to an Aveda salon so i was pleasantly surprised when we started off with a scalp massage. Stephanie made this such a relaxing experience ! She was very sweet and took great care of me. This wasn’t necessarily planned but I’m happy i chose Douglas J and Stephanie to do my hair. I will be back :)

I highly recommend Douglas J. Salon for their treatments. I had an amazing massage with student Amber Steiner who gave one of the best massages I have ever had. She helped work through muscle tightness and provided really helpful tips for stretching to help recover faster from exercise!

The whole experience was very friendly and professional! I appreciated the extra measures they have taken to be safe in this pandemic: temperature taken at the door, masks required by everyone in the salon, and masks and hand sanitizer available for guests.Cam, especially, was great and my hair looks exactly the way I wanted it to be! This is my first salon experienced so I am allowed to say that this is the best one I have ever had. I came in for a haircut with a face frame and I was amazed with all that my hairdresser (Caroline) did. I was given a scalp massage with essential oils and and a shoulder massage. Then I was taken to the back for a shampoo and she was very thorough. After my hair was cut and see how focused she was on giving me exactly what I wanted. I was given a hair dry accelerator and gel for my hair before it was dried. While it was being dried, I received a hand and arm massage from another staff member. When my hair was dry, she cleaned it up to make sure it was even. I also talked to her throughout my appointment and she was delightful. I highly suggest this salon.

Ive been coming to this salon for years, and typically end up with different stylists because I always seem to be making appointments last minute. My last visit I saw Lindsay, and she was amazing! She implemented my ideas perfectly and gave me some great tips for things Ive been struggling with concerning my hair. I always hate judging people in the service industry by their personalities, but Lindsay was very kind and chill, which was extremely appreciated after a busy day at work. I would recommend everyone see her.

I have been going to this salon for facials since last summer. The service is great. Leanne was professional, knowledgeable, and gave a fabulous facial. Wow! Made an appointment online for 3:15 today, they called and said theyd have to reschedule due to the fact that I havent been there in 3 years and theyd need more time to consult me to cut my hair? Seriously? They canceled my appointment and told me to pick another day to spend more time consulting in the haircut I want - an hour isnt long enough? Id thought Id re-try them, never again. When I made the haircut appointment, the system said it would be $85 for a haircut. Not a big deal, they used to be worth it. So, now they have an open appointment slot for 3:15 today that I cant have.

I went to Leanne for a 90 minute facial and it was amazing. I was surprised at how much was included. I got a warm bubbly foot soak while she asked questions about my skin and skin care, and then the facial...there were probably 7 different treatments on my face and each one had a massage, warm towels, relaxation...so awesome! Also included in the 90 minutes are 2 other massage areas - scalp, shoulders, neck, hands or feet. Leanne has a gift with doing facials and I will definitely be back!

I just came in for a trim and had an amazing experience with my stylist, Aisha! She started with a relaxing scalp massage with scented oil. Then I had a wash, cut, and blow dry. She also used some products to help keep my hair (long, fine, susceptible to breakage) protected from the heat of the blow dryer and the humidity outside. Afterwards, I received a hand+arm massage. Overall, she was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about her craft, hair care, and the products she used. Would definitely recommend to others to get their hair cut by Aisha!

I got my haircut from Samantha. She was amazing. I wanted a shorter cut for summer, and kind of let her run with it. It turned out way better than my expectations. She and I were able to talk through the whole appointment, and she made sure to let me know to come back if the cut needed tweaking (it didnt, but I appreciated the offer). I will definitely be going back to her. She is by far the best stylist I have had at Aveda.

I received a gift card for Christmas 2017 from hubby to get nail care. I have bitten my nails down to the quick since young. I went to Renee and began with gels and changed to dip gel in early Spring. I have the most beautiful nails now and have quit biting them. For me a miracle, and Im surprised how much its raised my self esteem. Thanks to hubby and Douglas J.

Very happy with my summer cut and color with Sam (as usual) but extra pleased with their COVID precautions. Everyone gets temp checked at the door, everyone must wear masks while inside (no exceptions), and stylists wear an additional plastic face shield at the wash stations while they have to be close to you.

Alright, yall...this place is fantastic. Front desk staff is superbly nice and welcoming, the salon itself is beautiful and clean, and those scalp/hand massages are to die for. But above all, my stylist Crystal T. made my visit spectacular. Crystal is a hair goddess, making just a trim look and feel like a million bucks. Definitely recommend, definitely going back. :)

Took my 11 year old daughter for a haircut. We have always done Great Clips in the past and I wanted to give her a special treat. Crystal was her stylist and was so friendly and did a great job! She listened to my daughters request and made her feel very pampered. My daughter cant wait to go back and it is definitely worth it.

I came in today feeling pretty discouraged about my skin health and walked out feeling encouraged knowing it was actually healthier than I thought. And just sooooooo relaxed.I get my cut and color done by Sam and Cam and have nothing but compliments for them both. They work really well together as a team as well.I love my Aveda team and have no desire to go anywhere else.

Mackenzie is amazing! Shes really great at working with you to develop a plan for a style that really suits your face AND lifestyle, which is so rare in stylists! You can tell shes not only skilled and extremely smart, but also passionate about what she does, and that makes the world of difference. Shes not afraid to offer suggestions, and follows with explanations, which is extremely helpful! My only complaint is that I have since moved away from Ann Arbor, and no other stylist compares. She is truly gifted!!

I have gotten my hair cut by Crystal T. twice now, and both times I have left the salon BEYOND pleased. Crystal really takes the time to listen to what you want, and she takes those things into account during your appointment. She always tailors the service to what you request, puts 100% of her effort into each cut, and gives tips as to how you can improve your look at home on your own. On top of her talent as a stylist, she is extremely friendly and great to talk to. If I can help it, I will never go to any other stylist! I would highly recommend scheduling an appointment with Crystal.

Looked for an aveda salon in Ann Arbor and found this one. I did a major chop and cut 10 inches off my hair! Looks fantastic and I couldnt be happy. Totally recommend! Cant recall her name but she was wonderful and recommended a place to donate my hair.Went back about six weeks later, got a trim from Crystal and it looks fantastic. SO pleased with both experiences and will continue to bring my service there! If I could give it more than five stars, I totally would.

I just had my hair cut and styled by Crystal T! She is so patient and really takes time to make sure every aspect of the cut is working well. I loved my experience, and I would highly recommend this salon. Prices are not too bad, especially because its a non-tipping salon. However, be sure to write reviews and refer friends in order to off-set the lack of tip.

Enjoyed having my hair styled by Caroline, one of their newer staff members. She was excellent and Id definitely go back for another blow out. It took about an hour start to finish, including a scalp and hand massage.

Special thanks to Haley and her supervisor who were both great, friendly and professional when we had to go back a second time to get my daughters color treatment fixed. This was a very positive experience. I have to say that the first experience gave us a negative impression due to the supervisors comments to my daughter which were gruff and unprofessional in my opinion. The stylist was nice, but made some pretty big mistakes in the coloring and left a large line on the back of her head after it was not blended properly. Glad we could go back and have a positive experience and a job well done the second time.

Just had a cut from Amanda who is beyond fabulous! I have super curly hair and I have to be very careful about who cuts my hair. Joaquin took my hair type and how I normally wear my hair into account and included some tip and tricks such as where best to part my hair for my face shape and the best products to not weigh my hair down due to its fine texture. The beauticians do a great job and its a relaxing atmosphere, but my French Manicure looked great, but chipped after one day, and my daughters hair was uneven. It was a neat experience, inexpensive and great training for the students, but its a gamble on what youll get. If youre short on cash its a great option/deal.

Also, this was my first time to an Aveda salon, and learning about their principal and how they work as a company made me respect them even more. Totally coming back here.

Great first experience at this Aveda salon... Justin listened to myconcerns regarding past color mistakes... suggested proper corrections and the whole process turned out looking incredible!!!Kristin was very attentive ( very gentle washing out the toner ) and asked the right questions about my cut.... she was able to give me the perfect razor cut without me even showing her a pic.

Im really happy with the great experience I had with Justin and Joaquin. They took great care of me and my teenager and we left with amazing hair cuts and styles. Very impressed with this salon.

I got a very short haircut when i asked for something Medium length. I even brought a picture. I give you 3 stars, because I usually get my haircut with Lindsey and she is great.

I changed my color but wasn’t completely sure I was happy with the results. My stylist told me to sleep on it. The next day I called back and they quickly scheduled me to come back in. I walked out with the exact result I wanted and the staff members were very polite and courteous.

Kristin and Krystal helped me out with the situation and I left glowing. Im a guy that normally goes to barber shops. But the service here -- scalp and shoulder massage, wash and dry, attentive and detailed cut, friendly service, and most importantly a great haircut -- left me blown away. Lauren (Level 3) was fantastic! She fixed a terrible hair dye job that I received from another salon in Ann Arbor, that I didnt think was fixable. She boosted my self confidence and made me feel pretty again. She took the time to make it right. That was HUGE for me. All I have ever encountered in the past with other salons was hairstylists rushing to get the job done because they were booked with another client in an unreasonable short time frame. I will definitely be going back to Lauren for all of my hair styling needs.

I asked for the best stylist for curly hair and got Tess. She is wonderful. She took time discussing style, gave a great dry cut and good advice for maintenance. I was very pleased.

I found myself searching for a new hair stylist right before my sisters wedding (poor planning on my part.) Wedding photos are around forever and when you’re a part of the ceremony, everyone is going to see your hair. I’ve had great experiences with Aveda salons in the past in different parts of the country so I took a shot and was fortunate to be able to make a haircut appt with Tess on short notice. Hands down, Tess gave me the best cut I’ve ever had. She’s a true artist. She was really wonderful about making sure to give me the cut I wanted. I also had a blast chatting about our dogs. I took a gamble and won, ha! Everyone else at the salon that morning was equally genuine and sweet and it was a really lovely experience before heading into a hectic event weekend. I’m very appreciative (and stoked to be heading back in for another Tess cut his afternoon!!)

I went into this appointment knowing that this is an educational process, so I can’t blame anyone specific. If you’re going to get your hair highlighted, I would go somewhere else. I spent 6.5 hours in the chair to get brassy blonde highlights. I came back two days later for them to “fix” it. After redo highlights and two toners, they were still unable to fix my brassy hair and I left with soaking wet hair. My hair is patchy and it looks ridiculous. I spent more money than I do at my professional stylist (who was fully booked which is why I had to go elsewhere). Good luck to anyone who gets their hair done here.

Not only does Crystal give the absolute best scalp massages (and a fantastic haircut with the elusive perfect amount of chatting and also time for you to just relax and be pampered), the front staff frequently spends 5-10 minutes with me playing what Im sure is a frustrating game of Tetris with my schedule to find the soonest time to get in for a long overdue color. Accommodating, comfortable, and friendly. What more could you ask for?

Literally my ONLY chance to do something for me nowadays, is a hair appointment. Living far away from family and any type of support system, I depend on my husband to watch my 3 kids on a Saturday to get my hair done every once and awhile. Because my husbands job has been very demanding lately, he has had to work some Saturdays, causing me to cancel hair appointments for the last 4 months. My mom is in town visiting and granted me the opportunity to get my hair done today and watch my two older kids. My sleeping baby was strapped to me in a carrier when I happily went into my long awaiting hair appointment. In which case I was told to leave bc I had my baby with me (who was asleep in a carrier- i did not bring in a kid who would be running around and being crazy). I left nearly in tears because this very special moment and time for myself that Ive been waiting for months for, was denied, simply for being a mom. This is the kind of thing that makes the balance of remaining yourself and being a mom so difficult. I will be finding a different salon thats more accommodating for different people and lifestyles. This establishment is not family friendly, baby friendly, or mom friendly. Being a mom with no support system is hard enough- give her a break and let her get her hair done.

Bethany was nice and professional. She tweaked the cut as we went per my feedback, and I am very happy with the final result. I would come back!

Been looking for MY stylist in Ann Arbor for 3 years. Tess is it! I like very short, stylish cuts, and it seems that most stylists are affraid to cut women’s hair short. The first time, Tess gave me a picture perfect style cut. Second time she heard me and gave me the same cut even shorter so it had room to grow. I’m a happy customer.I was initial put off by the $, as Tess is their top tier,, but learned they don’t take tips, so in reality I’m at break even with other salons. So happy all around.

Have always had a great cut, whether given by a level one or someone more experienced.

Kristen is amazing! Shes thoughtful and pleasant and fixed the debacle of a haircut I had when I met her! The bonus is the hand massage you get while youre getting your hair cut~!

Every experience at Douglas J Salon is amazing. Its only an hour but I feel like I have been away on a 3 day weekend.

My first Aveda experience! I didnt know what I was in store for, but I must say it was a VERY pleasant surprise. Essential oil scalp massage, aromatherapy and hand/arm massage, not to mention a beautiful haircut and style; I couldnt be more pleased. I will be back, and I will definitely recommend to everyone. OH! I almost forgot! The price was very reasonable and less than I expected. #Winning!
