I went to see this practice to set up a new primary care relationship as I am new to the area. I was asked to sign a poorly written controlled substance agreement which basically said that I lose all say in regards to medication options for any controlled substances, would require making her the primary person responsible for dispensing said medications because I am too stupid to know what’s good for me, would need to submit to random drug testing (who pays for that?) and basically be treated as if I was a criminal without any reasonable suspicion of drug abuse.I do not believe in being guilty until proven innocent unless there is reasonable suspicion that a drug is being abused. In addition, a clearly worded process needs to be spelled out that includes details regarding who receives what information should something in the process go wrong. I.E. Who are the “necessary authorities” they refer to in this agreement that are notified if I am violation?I refused to sign the document during the in-take process which is where things went south. A very rude young woman (reminded me of a sales closer) came into the exam room and shoved the controlled substance agreement in front of me and asked me to circle all the things that I disagreed with.Instead of allowing me to have a reasonable conversation with the doctor, she became aggressive and demeaning as if I was doing something wrong. I had enough and said that we are not going to have a debate over this. She then stated that their practice had been utilizing this form for over 15 years which was a lie. I have seen numerous physicians for well over 15 years and this issue wasn’t even an issue until the opioid crisis hit. You can tell this document was drafted recently. By the way, this was my first time I had ever seen an agreement like this.I asked what the bottom line was and was told unless I sign, I would have no access to controlled medications. The young, snooty nurse or whoever she was said we could either continue the in-take process or stop. I chose to stop and walk out.If this was “hello”, my thought process was it should also be “goodbye”. These doctors think they are God and can hold your healthcare needs hostage unless you agree to sign their “cover the doctor’s butt” form.BTW, their office was filled with patients and in my opinion, was a patient mill “next”, “next”, “next”!I also have to laugh at their motto “care is our middle name”.If you would like to be an informed patient, search the Internet for sample controlled substances agreements and decide for yourself.
