My sister and I accompanied my Mother to look for an independent living retirement apartment. We looked at several different floor plans and received a tour of the Montebello from Britni. She was kind and helpful, allowing us plenty of time to look at the available apartments. Moving was a big decision and we appreciated Britni giving us the opportunity to visit several times to be sure the Montebello would be right for my Mom. It was a pleasure working with Britni, she was helpful throughout Mom’s move and remains a resource to all of us. I continue to enjoy interacting with all of the staff that I encounter when I visit Mom.

The lunch greeting we had for my mom was excellent, just getting to know some of the employees and some of the residents. We had a lovely tour of the various room layouts available. All questions we asked were answered and we just felt welcomed there. The whole layout of the campus is beautiful and all of the residents were beautifully dressed and groomed. Naturally, the closing on her new apartment was lengthy, but again, all questions were answered and we were more at ease toward the end. I think its going to be a great fit for my mom and will certainly enjoy visiting her.

My father moved to Montebello Independent Living 8 months ago and our experience was wonderful. MaryAnn Stadley and Britni Lujan made the transition to his new home practically seamless, even under the COVID restrictions. Communication with me was great, expectations known, and his apartment home well prepared for him on moving day. Dad loves the food, the friendly and supportive staff, and we believe he’s in a safe, secure, and supportive environment. I receive a weekly update and newsletter from the facility leadership and I’m kept well-informed of changes in restrictions, updates, and pertinent news. The staff really do care. They made Dads 96th birthday special when I could not enter the facility during Covid. They took Dad’s cake to his apartment, sang Happy Birthday, and sent me photos!! This is just one example of how the staff cared about my Dad during COVID! I’m grateful to each of them! I highly recommend Montebello Independent Living.

It was an absolutely horrible experience. They are completely non-communicative. They do not return phone calls. They were supposed to email us a plan for my mother-in-law’s care. We received nothing from them. They were supposed to set up zoom calls. They never returned our calls, to set them up. They returned her glasses to us, completely mangled. I don’t believe they bathed her. We have absolutely no idea what kind of physical therapy, if any, that they did. All they told us was that she could walk 25 steps, so they were discharging her. Thank goodness she was only there, for a short period of time.

A couple years ago, my elderly mother and I toured several Independent living facilities in Albuquerque. The Montebello on Academy was her first choice and we soon put ourselves on the waiting list. Last week she finally moved in and the support she received was phenomenal. As with many seniors, she was anxious about the move and a bit reluctant to leave her home of 20 years. Since moving into the Montebello she has called me several times to rave about the apartment and the professionalism of staff. Britni Lujan has been our contact there and she has been extremely responsive and caring to both me and my mom during a very stressful process. We are both very pleased.

My sister, Virginia Silva was recently admitted to an assisted living apartment at Montebello on Academy. The level of assistance provided by the staff, Maryann Stanely and Britni Lujan in particular, was exceptional. Because of COVID there was significant complexity transferring my sister from the hospital, to the skilled nursing center, and ultimately to Montebello assisted living.MaryAnn worked diligently and tirelessly assuring Ginnies smooth transition among these facilities. Britni Lujan dedicated several days of her time, caring enough to assure all of Ginnies possessions were properly accounted for , and placed with great care in her new assisted room.Britni Lujans efforts on Ginnies behalf were extraordinary, and my sister could not be happier. Our father was transferred from the Hospital to the inpatient rehabilitation facility Montebello. He had been evaluated and deemed too weak to be able to walk. He was evaluated by OT as he was having trouble swallowing and was declared a risk for aspiration. Additionally, he is diabetic. Shortly after he got to Montebello he was found alone in the bathroom alone. He had gotten out of bed and walked to the bathroom and stated that he had asked several times for assistance but was ignored. On several occasions, he was found by family members and friends to be walking around the facility ignored by staff. On a daily basis any family member and or friend who visited remarked on the lack of timely care our father was receiving. They reported finding him in dirty depends on several occasions as there was no adequate attention. He was left wearing dirty clothes although there was clean clothes available. He was left sitting alone in a wheelchair in a dark room. To the staff, everyone remarked on the neglect, as no one ever seemed to come in to check on him or answer his call bell. Everyone complained about the person next to our father blasting the volume on his television so loud it negatively affected our father getting adequate rest. Although a room change was requested the first day, but as was the pattern, the request was ignored. The overriding concern and of most importance was the unprofessional and incompetent treatment regarding our father’s health care. He was expected to get himself to the dining room even though he wasn’t supposed to be walking without assistance. He was given large pills to swallow (uncrushed) even though he at risk for aspiration, prescribed a soft diet and his dietary requirements were not addressed as he was expected to eat whatever was being served in the dining room and given orange juice to drink (no acknowledgement of diabetes or swallowing difficulties). It was clear his physical and mental health declined day by day so had him discharged.

My mom has made so many friends and just loves the social aspect of living there! Its like a great big home where everyone knows your name! My parents have gotten to know so many interesting people- they love getting to know everyone and hearing their stories and theres so much for them to do! They love the Wednesday happy hour - its a big event and they look forward to that weekly social hour! Theres always some kind of special event they can attend. I never worry about them - I had been constantly worrying about them not eating properly and getting to the stores for their necessities when they were in their own home and Montebello took all that worry away! All the folks that work there are just the greatest! Theyre always planning something to keep the residents happy. We are just thrilled - ALL of us!

Montebello on Academy was negligent and irresponsible in their care of my 85 year old father who was sent there for rehab. The day after being admitted, we were informed that two patients at the facility had tested positive for COVID-19. When asked if my Dad had any direct contact with anyone who’d had contact with these two patients, I was told that the two physical therapists working with my Dad had also worked with both covid positive patients. I asked if they were both sent home to be quarantined and I was told that they were not. They told us that they were taking extreme precautions with incoming patients like my father, and he received multiple negative COVID test results while staying at Montebello. As soon as the insurance company determined that my father no longer needed their care, they became impatient to have himremoved from the facility, despite us agreeing to pay out of pocket (which we did immediately upon receiving a bill).I moved my father from Montebello to an assisted living facility, which required a negative COVID test prior to the move. Montebelloperformed a test and shared the negative results, and shortly afterwards my father was moved out of Montebello. Two days after themove, Montebello called me and let me know they had received a positive COVID test from my father. For all previous tests, they hadasked me for permission as his Medical Power of Attorney, however for the positive test, I was never informed that they were testinghim. Its my belief that they suspected something, and tested without discussing with me. They then moved him into an assisted livingfacility without sharing their suspicions, and only informed us once they had a positive COVID test. While in their care, my father contracted COVID-19. I believe that this happened as a direct result of their extreme negligence and serious lack of professional judgment. My father has since been moved from the assisted living facility into the hospital, who has told us he has a 50% chance of survivingCOVID-19.I am furious with Montebello, and regret sending my father there for his rehab. Montebello’s inability to do the appropriate thing in this circumstance may very well have cost my Father his life.

This is the worst facility in Albuquerque to place your loved ones. The CNA’s do not answer call lights in a timely fashion as they’re very understaffed. My father was constantly falling and on one occasion, did not receive any of his medications. Ever since Amy (Administrator) came to The Montebello, the place has steadily declined. It used to be a very reputable facility. We had our mother there 3.5 years ago and it was a much better experience. Why hasn’t corporate conducted audits on her employee satisfaction/retention rates? Shouldn’t red flags be flying? When me and my sister talked to the nurses, we were made aware that she runs all the good staff off, leaving mostly agency nurses to work the floor. There seems to be a very toxic administrative/nursing environment and the patient care suffers for it. I don’t blame the nurses for leaving.

When and how much medication has she received when it was as needed. We are paying a high rate for this care and we the family have no idea what and if the standards are being met. They say that they check every two hours but there isnt a way for families to know when was the last check. Many residents are parked in front of a tv in front of the nurses station during the day. My Grandmother stayed at Montebello Independent Living for 2 1/2 yrs from 2013 - 2015. During this time, she also used the nursing and Assisted Living facilities. I am her primary caregiver, and handled most of her day-to-day affairs, including all of her business and special needs arrangements, and became closely involved with the people at Montebello.Id give it 4 1/2 stars, (but didnt see a 1/2 option.)Pros:- Good people who routinely make an extra effort for our needs.- Price. The Independent Living apartments were priced below average for similar facilities.- Apartment. Our Independent Living Apartment had a small enclosed patio with a small rock/dirt area. Maintenance installed a pet door so my grandmother was able to keep her small dog, who could come and go at will. I found no other facilities with this type of pet set-up. The rooms are well insulated for sound/heat/cold.- Facilities. The dining room is very nice. The food was average but abundant and wine is served. There is a nice bar area adjacent to a library/reading room with free daily happy hour. There are several nice community areas. The Hair Salon was one of her favorites.- Shuttle. Very good at taking her to various appointments on time. We usually met her at the appointments and brought her home. Personable friendly drivers.- Physical Therapy. Terrific folks, Terrific facilities and equipment. In hindsight, I wished we had used them more.Cons:- Parking is sometimes an issue for visitors. They have too many reserved for residents, and not enough for visitors.- Size. The place is so big, that my Grandmother usually didnt have the energy to take advantage of many of the facilities.- Shuttle. Wont go to the west-side. (where we live)Nursing - We had 3 stays in nursing, averaging 3 weeks each. Like every other nursing unit that Ive seen, this Nursing unit seemed understaffed. If anyone finds one thats not, Id like to hear about it.Assisted Living - We spent a week here. Although the facilities seemed in need of a remodel, the staff was personable, responsive and very good in every way that I could gauge. Assisted living was priced slightly above average. In a nutshell, my Grandmother and I have been very satisfied here. I recommend Montebello for Independent or Assisted Living.

Our family has a great deal of experience with Elder Care. On behalf of our family elders, over the past eight years, we have worked with 8 Elder-Care Facilities in Missouri, Arizona, and New Mexico. The facilities have ranged from Independent Living to Assisted Living to Health Care/Rehab to Skilled Nursing Facilities.Without a doubt, Montebello on Academy is the very best facility that covers the full range of care. Our current elder, my 100 year-old father, enjoyed Independent Living at Montebello for 5 years. Last year, after a brief illness, he was admitted for the second time to “Health Care” (Skilled Nursing). He was well cared for and recovered both times. Last year, he moved from Health Care to Assisted Living. He absolutely loves the care he receives. The beauty of Montebello is that he continues to see all his friends from Independent Living as often as he wants and is greeted warmly on a daily basis by the staff members from Independent as well as Assisted Living. The receptionists from both levels of care have known him for a long time and always have a kind word for him. He loves the care and personal attention. Every time we return to Montebello after an outing, he exclaims, “Home, Sweet Home!”Dad loved the beautiful dining room in Independent Living. The move to Assisted Living was “different”, but he has his spot in their dining room and always reports that his meals are varied, well prepared, and beautifully served. The care staff on Assisted Living does an excellent job day in - day out. They know Dad well, appreciate him, and allow the maximum of independence without sacrificing the care he needs. Twice daily, they make sure his thermal ice water mug is filled with fresh ice and water. The housekeeping staff knew him for years on Independent Living, so they are like family when they come to his room on a daily basis to clean. He marvels at the number of people it takes to run an organization such as Montebello. He had a long executive career as a Maj General, USAF, and then as the manager of the Hilton Hotels in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. He knows a good organization when he sees it.Montebello coordinates care with Ambercare Hospice. As of late last year, due primarily to his age, medical issues, and fall risk, Dad has benefitted from this additional level of service at Montebello. His nurse is exceptional. She visits at least twice weekly to check his vitals, note his cognitive status and orientation, inspect and care for any new physical problems, and request medication adjustments as needed. She works closely with the Ambercare Aide who visits twice weekly for showers and hygiene care.Last week, we celebrated Dad’s 100th Birthday. Our family worked for 4 months with the Montebello Activity Director and her staff members and the Chef. The party was attended by about 75 guests. The Activity staff members helped with every aspect of the party – they set up and decorated the room, worked with the Chef to coordinate hors d’oeuvres, serve beverages, and cut the cake. It was one of the best parties ever! And if you know Dad, you know this man knows how to party! So, if you’re considering Elder Care, look no further for the best organization there is: Montebello on Academy in Albuquerque, NM.

I dont know about the senior living part but the rehab portion has not been helpful. Its very difficult to talk to the doctor or physicians assistant. Doctors dont call family for updates. Nurses always trying to give dad laxatives and he has diarrhea now even though we have asked many times not to. Berated by tech for not having enough pants even though one pair disappeared the first day and there was no dirty laundry for 5 days then in a matter of a day most of his clothes were dirty. Put super sticky bandages on his wounds that stuck to his wounds and thin skin and took an hour to remove 4 bandages. Tech complained about him bleeding on the sheets and having to make the bed. Has taken almost two weeks for them to approve home health to come in to assess him. Positives: food is good and physical therapists are good.

As is the case at most nursing homes, there is no accountability for stolen articles of clothing. I guess I foolishly expected better at this facility. Unmarked items are sent to the lost and found but if it isnt there, its considered a mysterious act of DE-combustion. You get the well, thats just tough treatment with no offer of compensation and no accountability for the thieves on their staff who are the ONLY ones handling soiled laundry. My advice---if youre taking a loved one to this facility take only cheap, second hand nightgowns you dont care about losing because its unlikely youll ever see them again. And DONT take anything of value whether its clothing or any other type of personal item. The fact that the items went missing wasnt as much a surprise to me as the attitude of the management. There was no good will offer of compensation or any other measure of good faith. It was just gee, thats tough--its YOUR loss and that was it.
