Dr Kotlow and staff are nothing less then amazing! All three of my kids have gone to him from birth. He has done all three kids lip and tongue revisions. We continue to go to him now for dental work and drive over an hour because he is simply the best. Yesterday we had their cleanings. I was not able to have anyone come with me to help with my 1 year old,2 year old and 5 year old. The staff was so friendly and helpful even went as far as helping me to the car to make sure everyone got in the car safe after the appointment. Thank you again Dr Kotlow and Staff

Super frustrated with this practice. Kotlow stopped taking our insurance and seemed to get frustrated that we decided to move to a different practice. We requested his office send our records 4 times to a new practice. We NEVER heard back from them. When we got someone on the phone they assured us they would take care of it and never did. Our new practice had to re do services due to lack of records which has now cost of $350 due to insurance frequently denials. I guess once you are making money you dont need to worry about how your consequences effect others. Decent dentist. Terrible chairside manor as well as terrible customer service from staff.

Words cant explain what kind of impact Dr. Kotlow has had on our familys life. We were told our sons tongue tie didnt really need to be revised - for his entire first year of life. It wasnt until my mama intuition kicked in regarding the concern that we took him to get another opinion. We ended up at Dr. Kotlows office and are so glad to have been lucky enough to have him work on our son. Our sons tongue and lip ties were Class IV - the tightest level possible. We had no idea the impact these ties were having on our sons life. Since the procedure has occurred, he is making so many new sounds, communicating more, and sleeping through the night! We owe all of this to Dr. Kotlow and his crew! Thank you from the bottoms of our hearts!

Brought my two year old son to his appointment for a cleaning. He was checking my sons mouth and my son was crying and trying to get his hands out of his mouth. We obviously took his hands away so th4 doctor could finish checking his mouth. After the doctor checks my sons teeth he asked if my son throws tantrums a lot. We said sometimes he is two years old. He then proceeded to tell my boyfriend and I that something is wrong with our child that he has autism and isnt a normal child. Then proceeded to give us a card to get him evaluated. Very unprofessional wont be back!

We brought our daughter to Dr.Kotlow this past month. She had just turned 9 months old. Our pediatrician told us she didn’t show any signs of being tongue tied. Recently someone pointed out that our daughter was a bit tied. Dr. Kotlow was highly recommended to us by several people. Everyone we talked to on the phone we’re wonderful and so accommodating. We made an appointment and went in. We found out that our daughter was indeed tongue tied. (Upper lip as well). Kotlow is so informative and really is passionate about helping parents with all their tongue tied needs. We found out that she was level 4. The procedure itself didn’t take more than 5 minutes. As soon as we got home we noticed an improvement. Kotlow is very Thorough, showed us how to do all the Exercises. He answered any questions we had and really cares about your child’s well being. We are just so happy. It’s has been two weeks and she has healed beautifully. Over all her whole well being is better from eating, smiling and even sleeping!!! We are so beyond pleased! And a special thank you to the ladies in the office! My printer ran out of ink that morning we lived about an hour away and I explained to her the issue. She was so kind to meet us at the door and let us fill out the paper work there!

For the first 7 months of my daughters life she struggled with slow weight gain, inability to take a bottle, gagging constantly. I struggled with severe nipple pain, engorged breasts, and constant frustration with breastfeeding. This was especially hard after having such an easy time breastfeeding my first daughter. I knew it shouldnt hurt and something was not right.   We were misdiagnosed with thrush and both took multiple medications for MONTHS with no relief.  By 6 months, my daughter dropped from the 50th percentile at birth to the 3rd percentile and then failed to gain weight for several weeks, falling off the chart.  Attempting to introduce solids just exasperated the problems.  Every food caused gagging and vomiting. My pediatrician was stumped and could only point to a GI issue. Thankfully an IBCLC recommended checking my daughter for tethered oral tissuss. She referred us to Dr. Kotlow and we made an appointment right away.  My daughter was diagnosed with a tongue and lip tie and it was corrected within minutes in his office.  Immediately after the procedure my daughter latched and it was pain free for the first time.  That night she began nursing like a newborn again!  Only now she was emptying my breasts, feedings were lasting 20 minutes, and her little belly was full and soft and she was content.  Within days she gained 3 ounces!  She is now taking solids without gagging and will take a bottle for the first time ever.   A month after the procedure, she continues to gain weight steadily - she is happy and healthy. I am so incredibly relieved and only wish we had checked for ties earlier.  Thank you Dr. Kotlow for the work you do and for continuing to try to educate our pediatricians and professionals.  I am so grateful to have found you!

I went to Dr.Kotlow when I was a little, and now that I’m 19 I can see that he did what was needed in order to make my smile better. He is very knowledgeable, however now I am literally terrified of the dentist to the point where I cannot even get a filling without sedation. I was a very anxious kid. I couldn’t even be in the open cleaning area because I could not stand the noise of gag reflex’s. The good thing that this place allowed was for me to choose to be in the private cleaning room. However, I had almost every baby tooth pulled and it was very traumatizing. I still remember the sounds of the teeth as they left my mouth and me sobbing. He even pulled some adult teeth with nothing but novocaine, even though he knew I was terrified and He would tell me to stop crying or he wouldn’t give me laughing gas. He never offered to prescribe me any medication before procedures to relax me and he never called to check up on me. He also never allowed my mom to be with me during procedures even though I begged. He saved my mouth, however I would never recommend this place or bring my children there because I know there are dentists out there that will be able to provide good dental care while making my children feel comfortable and safe. I now go to smile zone and they are finally getting me to trust a dentist again. I would recommend bringing you’re kids elsewhere, either to “where smiles grow” or “the smile zone”, and save them the traumatizing experience.

Where do I begin. Besides the fact that my 13 year old son (a patient of Dr. Kotlows since 3 years old) was removed from his practice because of his height, I am HIGHLY disappointed. I just got home from my sons new family dentist, where we were shocked to find out that he would need to get 6 cavities filled. The cavities are deep close to the root (possibly requiring root canals) and would have taken closer to year, or at least longer than my sons last 6 month appt to get to the point theyre at. The dentist was baffled as to how these could have been missed in January X-rays or a thorough exam by Dr. Kotlow.I always overlooked Dr, Kotlows arrogance and terrible bedside manner, because I thought he was skilled, and the best dentist around. And here I am, LITERALLY paying the price, 11 years later.

I feel compelled to write a review after reading all the negative comments as well. Overall taking your child to the dentist is a daunting task for parents. No one likes to hear that their 3 year old has 4 cavities or needs teeth pulled etc.. As a parent we take this personally because overall we give our children sugary snacks and we are sometimes too tired or busy to ensure the brush/floss 2 or more times a day. Sometimes it’s not our fault and its genetics (which is still our fault) .. So with that being said we are already stressed once we get to the office. Is Dr Kotlow super warm and fuzzy, no.. But he is professional and he cares for his patients. When my son was about 5 years old, he had a spacer in his mouth, at about 9pm on a Saturday night, the spacer broke- the metal part was sticking out and it wasn’t safe for us to just let it go. I called the office and left a message with the answering service. Dr Kotlow called me back within minutes and when I asked if I should take him to the ER he said, No, they will never know what to do. I will meet you at t the office in 15 minutes. So right there tells me he truly cares for his patients and that’s what is important to me. I believe the office staff is competent and they do stay on top of appointments and from an administrative stand-point they are efficient and do an excellent job. If you want an honest, competent dentist I would choose this office.

I was referred to Dr. Kotlow from a pediatric dental office that used to do lip and tongue ties but no longer does. I was very satisfied with how fast they got us into the office, literally two days after I called, the amount of information Dr. Kotlow and his secretary had given us, and how he answered every question I could possibly ask before I could even ask it. My daughter got her lip and tongue tie lasered, she was 12 weeks old, she came back to me not crying, and Dr. Kotlow said she loved him lol. The procedure was quick and he gave us a number to contact if we came across any concerns later, and when I did text him, he got right back to me. I’m excited to go back to his office in a week for our follow up to see how my daughter is healing. I highly recommend Dr. Kotlow!

My 3 yr old twins have been going there for 2 years now. Both were lip tied, one tongue tied. Dr. Kotlow explained how each condition would affect them in the future (space between front teeth & speech). The very quick laser procedures (literally seconds!) to correct these were also explained. The whole staff is great with both children and adults. My kids are a little shy about new experiences, so the staff showed them the room they would be in next time (kids move up to a bigger room at the age of 3) and let then walk around. Oh, and youll never forget to make a regular appointment because they email & text you reminders to set them up. I would definitely recommend.

I took my 6 month old for a consultation with Dr. Kotlow regarding possible lip/tongue ties. I was referred by many fellow mothers who couldn’t say enough about him as an expert in the field of ties and promoting breastfeeding journeys. My husband and I were very pleasantly surprised at how patient and kind he was. He was thoughtful in his examination process, and actually referred me to a lactation consultant, and suggested chiropractic care and other therapies to try and mitigate the situation prior to jumping right into the surgical procedure. This was exactly what we needed to hear from the expert in the field. Bottom line- we trust his opinion and the man is clearly not ‘laser happy’. I think he takes the whole situation into consideration and makes a plan for your child specifically and you as a parent have the authority to decide what’s best.

Ive taken both of my children to him. If feeding baby isnt going great or your child seems colicy or gasy. Then take him to Dr Kotlow because it is usually a mouth problem. I was told by 3 different pediatricians and a lactation consultant that my son was fine and only had a slight lip tie. I took him to dr kotlow and he had a tongue tie, lip tie, and cheek ties. I trusted my instincts something was wrong. Best decision i ever made. My daughter had a lip tie and without going to dr kotlow she wouldnt have been able to eat solid foods off of a spoon. The only thing that was a little scary to me was that they take your children downstairs without you, but it was a less than 10 minute procedure and my babys (9months at the time of her lip tie and 3 weeks old at the time of his corrections) never came back crying. And he was always very clear with what they would do for the procedure. So the 10 minutes of worry was worth how well his work is.

I was visiting my parents in Albany over the summer and one day my 7 year old pulls back her cheek and there is a MASSIVE lump on her gums (turned out to be an abcess but seeing a lump that was not the first thing I thought). It was a Friday a little before noon and I called our dentist is Boston who said to see someone in Albany immediately. We called my familys dentist in Delmar but their office was closed on Fridays and then started running down the phonebook. By the time I got to Lawrence Kotlow I was barely able to keep it together with the receptionist imagining the worst for my daughter and not being able to find anyone. The receptionist was so kind. Their doctor had just left for the weekend but she got my information and told me that she would find a doctor for us to see. She called around other practices and got us an appointment for that afternoon in Clifton Park. That was so above and beyond and I am so thankful for her kindness. Having support staff with that level of commitment and compassion is very telling about a practice.

I’m 23 now and remember going there when I was younger very fondly as my primary dentist. I had multiple teeth pulled and while I admit I was a nervous child Dr. Kotlow’s bedside manner was not one meant for children. I have one experience that was particularly painful-I had gotten the numbing liquid (just the rub to numb the gums for the needle) and typically I would remember he’d walk away for a few minutes to let it activate and then start sticking me with the Novocain. This time though he rubbed it on and waited maybe a few seconds (he didn’t even get up from the chair he sat in this time) and started going in with the needles. I remember starting to tear up and him saying things kind of brushing it off like I was being dramatic. He probably waited another few seconds and started pulling my (back) teeth. This was incredibly painful as I’m assuming the Novocain hadn’t kicked in all the way yet. When I screamed out in pain he said “oooh stop it that didn’t hurt” & then proceeded to keep repeating it as I was sobbing. Looking back I know he was a very knowledgeable dentist and I do have to thank him for finding a tooth that I had by my nasal cavity.

Ive worked for Dr. Kotlow & his staff now for over the last 4 years. Peoples perceptions and interpretations of things can often be misinterpreted and misconstrued so I would like to clarify a few things. First off, I can honestly say Ive never heard Dr. Kotlow or his staff use any language even remotely close to ripping teeth out. In fact, he often corrects parents jokingly when they mention pulling teeth or any similar wording and says I dont pull/rip/yank teeth, I gently remove them. His job is not to scare children, it is to make them as comfortable as possible so that they are at ease when returning to the office. Anything else would be counterproductive and hes not trying to make it harder for the children or himself in using such language. Secondly, Dr. Kotlow prefers to start seeing children at 1 year of age in order to prevent children coming in when they are older as an emergency with a large amount of intervention needed. Dr. Kotlow does everything he can with the best technology available to save childrens teeth. Sometimes due to the extent of decay, fillings or crowns may be necessary but the absolute last resort is for him to remove them. The removal of teeth is the last option because they are important for the childs oral & facial development however, if a tooth is no longer viable then for the safety & health of the child he will suggest it. I hope this helps to clarify some of the misinformation.

My four year old was at a recent cleaning in January when dr kotlow said he needed a pulpotomy (aka root canal) on his front tooth because it had abscessed from an injury. Dr Kotlow took an X-ray without informing me beforehand or asking permission. He explained nothing of the procedure to me, other than that he would be cutting through his tooth. I asked what he did for pain control to allow a 4 year old to tolerate this, he said “it doesn’t hurt” I did not feel comfortable with this, so I sought a second opinion and tried to get the X-ray sent( to avoid further radiation exposure that I never gave permission for in the first place ) which the office never did. The new office called for a second attempt to obtain the X-ray, dr kotlows office stated they had none. The whole practice seems very sketchy with parents not being allowed downstairs..things being done without consent..Needless to say we are not returning.

Dr. Kotlow is my daughters dentist and corrected her tongue and lip tie when she was 4 days old in 2013. The procedure helped me succeed in nursing and I weaned at 15 months. I felt compelled to write a review after googling his web page to forward it to my friend. I was saddened to see some negative reviews on this practice. Full disclosure I am a medical professional who has known Dr. Kotlow for five years personally and professionally. I know him to be an extremely caring and attentive individual. His staff is wonderful and always very helpful and kind. I suppose his no nonsense and frank approach could be misconstrued as cold and uncaring, but those terms are the last I would use to describe Dr. Kotlow. He is an exceptionally compassionate and empathetic man and practitioner. His straightforward approach comes from a place of wanting to help the patient and family immediately. It is understandably terrifying to have your newborn taken from you and brought to the procedure room without your supervision. I remember feeling frantic when that happened, but it is obviously unsafe to have people wandering around laser and radiology areas. Expect that your newborn will cry, expect that you may cry, expect that it may be emotionally difficult to stretch the surgery sites (much harder on me than on my daughter). It is a stressful and sleep-deprived time and emotions can run high if breastfeeding is not working or if your baby has reflux. It was an ugly time for me, but Dr. Kotlow and his team made everything much less stressful for our family by offering us reassurance, education and guidance through the whole process.

Dr. Kotlow and team are great. I have been taking my children to the office (an hour drive from my house) for 15 years. My kids LOVE to go to Dr. Kotlow, and never have any bad feedback about their experience with dental care. Dr. Kotlow is very experienced and friendly, the hygienists are great with the children, and the office and waiting room are pleasant for everyone. (The waiting room is especially fun for kids, with ipads mounted on the wall for kids to use and trains driving around the room on tracks.). It is easy to make and change appointments, and for emergencies I can always get right in to see the Doctor. I highly recommend this practice!

I met Dr Kotlow at a Solea dental meeting and he presented information on lip and tongue-ties. I was completely amazed and also so disappointed that I had never known this information before. Thank you for continually and tirelessly putting the information out to mothers and health care providers. I feel so blessed to have been part of your audience. On a personal note. I have two boys that are 4 years and 18 months. My 4 year old was such a “difficult” baby. It was a long labor and we needed the vacuum to help him out. Right away he was gaggy with nursing so they thought he swallowed a bunch of amniotic fluid, suctioned him 3 times without much improvement and the third time they suctioned him they suctioned up some green bile. They were worried he had an obstruction or infection, so he was in the NICU for 7 days, NPO for 4-5 of those and ended coming back to us with Acid reflux diagnosis and two medications. The medications did not seem to be helpful, he was very fussy, gassy, and wouldn’t sleep unless he was held upright, and I couldn’t get him to latch for nursing. Our first pediatric visit a week later, I told him of these symptoms but he said I was just a new mother and wrote a prescription for a third reflux medicine. I was appalled but didn’t want him to suffer so we had him on 3 reflux medications. Our lactation appointments involved 4 hands, nipple shields, and syringe and tubing of breast milk in the shield to get him to latch and nurse. It was horrendous. At home I couldn’t coordinate all of that. Lactation just said he was so used to bottle and pacifier from NICU, that I couldn’t compete with that so just to do formula and pump. Which I tried for 7 weeks, then quit because I felt so defeated. None of the medications helped, so I quit those within another couple of weeks, switched pediatrician, and was so depressed. I felt like I had failed my baby, couldn’t provide him the basic necessity of food and immunity. When you were review all the symptoms of the infants with TOTs, I think my jaw dropped to the desk. I had never thought he “looked” tongue tied nor had anyone else. So when I made it home tonight and was brushing and flossing his teeth, I asked him to open as big as he can and touch the roof of his mouth. Sure enough he can barely raise his tongue. I think Class 3 lingual frenum and might be tethered on maxillary frenum too? Wow did you open my eyes!!I hope to learn from you to better diagnose and treat these infants and mothers who are struggling. I will be over the moon if I can help other mothers not have the same experience that I did.Thank you and look forward to seeing you again.

I have been bringing my girls now 3 and 6 to Dr. Kotlow for nearly 5 years now since my eldest needed a minor surgery on her frenum. Since this first consult visit we have been so impressed by the pleasant professional environment focusing on oral care for real young dental consumers. The environment is set up for kids from the waiting room to the dental chairs. All the staff connect with and are trusted by our daughters and are a pleasure to interact with. Dr. Kotlow is an unbelievably capable dentist that our daughters trust and feel so comfortable with. We recommend this pediatrics dental service to all our family and friends and do so now to all those that might read reviews before selecting dental services for their children. This is an important health need for everyone and having the experience for children be so pleasant has the two girls looking forward to their next visit. This is a double thumbs up review for this wonderful group of professionals.

My husband and I took our daughter to Dr. Kotlow in September of 2014 for a lip and tongue tie revision. We drove over two hours with our 2 month old baby for the procedure because wed heard he was the best. Upon arrival we were put into a room to watch a video on what the procedure would entail. The doctor came into the room after the video was finished and said, so, do you have any questions? I felt this was a very impersonal and unprofessional way to treat new parents who were handing over their infant daughter for a scary procedure. Our daughter was then taken to have the procedure and we had to remain in a separate room to wait. She was returned to us with a mouth full of blood and crying hysterically. Dr. Kotlow shared a few instructions for at home care and then he left the room. We were not contacted again for any sort of follow up on how our daughter was doing. I would not recommend this doctor and if I had the chance to do it over I would consult with my PCP on what other options I had. Also, it is now February 2015 and I am still dealing with this dental office and my insurance to pay for the procedure. The procedure IS covered by my health insurance but Dr. Kotlows office has billed them incorrectly multiple times which has delayed the process. They have also billed me for late fees that have accrued while they wait for the insurance payment. The insurance payment that they are responsible for holding up the process on.

Dr. Kotlow was dream come true for my son and my family. Sadly we found out really late ( My son is 2) that my son was lip tied. His severe upper lip tie was either missed and or ignored by every health care professional to date including 2 nursing coaches at the hospital. In my opinion all nurses who are coaching or helping women to nurse should be educated in the field of both upper and lower lip/tongue ties. I had painful nursing and eventually had to give up and manually express my sons milk for 8 months till my supply ran out. I diagnosed my sons upper lip tie myself after being ignored by my sons primary care provider who merely provided excuse after excuse for trouble nursing, Delayed speech and decaying upper front only teeth. I was told he would nurse better as he got older. I was told that it would just become less painful over time. Ladies, nursing should NOT be painful. I was told his speech was delayed because hes a boy, and buys simply talk later than girls. I was told the brown tint on his front 4 teeth was from sippy cups and juice and pacifier use. None, I repeat NONE of these brush offs were true. My son had upper lip tie. The brittle decaying teeth were from breast milk and other food and drink being stuck between his upper lip and upper teeth creating a breeding area for bacteria. Had I not been so lucky as to stumble across a Facebook post mentioning lip ties and nursing pain, I would have never found out my son had a upper lip tie and subsequently found Dr. Kotlow. We drove 6 hours to Dr. Kotlows office for his frenectomy and I would do it again in a heart beat! The office was on a very nice end of town. Very clean and professional. I swear the waiting room was designed for my son! He was entertained the entire wait. With a motion activated floor mat and interactive train station it was a little toddlers dream. My son was very comfortable with Dr. Kotlow and they always say children are the best judges of character. He allowed Dr. Kotlow to look in his mouth without much resistance at all. He allowed Dr. Kotlow to give him the sedation mediation without any issue what so ever. My son even while waiting the hour for the medication to take affect continually asked for the doctor. He had taken a liking to him and that eased a lot of fears for me. My son, because of all previous inferior medical care required 4 porcelain veneers on his upper front teeth hence the sedation. I was nervous but I had no reason to be. My son wasnt even scared. He gladly went to the doctor when the time was right and returned on pretty uplifted spirits and in minimal pain. I have a very sensitive boy and had he been scared or in pain, He wouldnt have been shy to show it. Once the doctor mentioned ice cream, He was all ready to go! Dr. Kotlow really took to our story and was very social and informative. He was smart and kind and these may not be attributes most look for in a doctor, but I dont like to feel like herded cattle in any doctors office. Dr. Kotlow really made us feel like we mattered and that he cared for us and our child. He provided me with all the papers needed for care and even told me to text him if we needed anything. Thank you so much Dr. Kotlow for taking such great care of my son. For providing excellent dental care. For saving my sons teeth. For almost INSTANTLY improving my sons speech. Its only been 1 week and already my son is finding his voice! His words are more clear and hes isnt struggling to express thoughts vocally. I think my son had all but given up on speaking because of the upper lip tie. Once the frenectomy was done, Its as though everything came to him. He went from barely saying 2 words together which were not clear or crisp, to now putting entire phrases of words together and talking up a storm! Dr. Kotlow, You are a blessing to our family. Time, Travel and money well spent!

My daughter had the similar experience with Ryan Hayner. This was not a patient dentist for kids.

I want to share my experience to any mother considering Dr. Kotlow for a lingual frenectomy. I went to 4 dentists that were known to do frenectomies in Chicago. All of them said that they didnt think my son was tongue tied. He continued with swollen tonsils and a speech delay and I knew something was wrong. I am also a myofunctional therapist and TMJ head and neck physical therapist and knew that my son was posterior tongue tied but needed someone to diagnose him with it and release it. I went to Dr. Kotlow and spent the time and effort to go because he was recommended by many of the top lactation consultants and myofunctional therapists. In the matter of 1 minute, Dr. Kotlow confidently showed me how to diagnose the posterior tongue tie and successfully released it within 10 more minutes. My son is doing fantastic... he now is talking much much more. I am so grateful that Dr. Kotlow is performing these frenectomies because there are very few dentists or doctors that understand how to diagnose and release these posterior tongue ties. Thank you so much for helping me with my sons health because I am very aware of the effects of having a tongue tie. Now, my son can grow and develop normally. I am forever grateful for Dr. Kotlows skill and dedication. I highly recommend spending the money to travel to see the best of the best. I am so satisfied and at ease. Thank you.
