My father was admitted to the ER at your Akron campus on Thursday, October 7th at around 9:00PM. There were many things positive about our visit and the start of the visit was going very well. Once he was admitted to an ER room (currently still in the ER) his experience/and mine with your ER nurses (except for Wendy) has been very poor.I brought him to Summa because he had back surgery there in 2011 and our experience was really good. Unfortunately, his current experience (and mine as his sole remaining family member) has been awful.I know that you are battling many things in today’s current climate of health care, but the one constant that has always been important both in your profession and mine has always been customer care and service. When family members can’t even get a nurse or doctor to take their call for an update (especially for a COVID patient)…is that really great patient care and service. No…What you’re really telling the families of your patients is that you’re too busy to keep those loved ones informed…you’re telling them that you could care less. Instead of treating that family member like they’re one of your own, you just cast them off not knowing whether or not they will see that loved one alive again…in this case, me…wondering if I’m going to wake up the next morning with or without my father. Thanks for reading this…even though I doubt you will. I hope things get better with your customer/patient care. Right now, my dad is in excruciating pain in your ER and can’t even get Tylenol or Ibuprofen to help alleviate the pain so he can sleep.Pretty sad for a place who’s mission is “to provide the highest quality, compassionate care for their patients and community.”

Got in a car accident. Guy hit me from behind. Had 3 other passengers. 2 of them struggling with back and head pain. I myself felt my right calf was pulling apart.6 hours of waiting still no check up. People who arrived hours after us already received their check up. When I asked how much more time the assistance at the front desk say they don’t know and could take couple more hours. ALREADY BEEN 6 HOURS!This isn’t the first time. My sister had pain in her kidney. This emergency department made her wait 2 hours and still no check up. Imagine 2 hours of kidney pain. Doctor later diagnosed her with kidney stones. She chose to go home because she had to take care of her child.I advise you to avoid this emergency department.Your welcome.

Don’t go here if you’re looking to get to summa detox and recovery because they don’t care if you’re on your death bed, they’ll still make you wait 5+ hours in ER. My father was told the only way he can medically detox from alcohol & to be assessed was to go to this ER first before they’d see him for rehabilitation. What a horrible place. There were severely sick patients mixed with detoxing patients all waiting in an overflowing waiting room with nurses who didn’t even seem to care about our concerns. I asked why the ER had to be where we waited as my father wasn’t sick, he’s just looking for help with alcohol addiction. Why would anyone want to get help for addiction when you are treated like garbage and forced to wait 5+ hours while actively going through alcohol withdrawal?! That’s inhumane & insane. No wonder addicts don’t reach out for help because this is what happens when they do. We had to leave because it was too much. We’ll never return here. Nobody even cared and brushed us off. Crazy to think you’d have to go to the ER in order to get help.

Four hours to get a dog bite cleaned? Really? No pain medication or help for hours, just being ignored in a waiting room. And dont you dare ask the staff how long they expect it to be. They are clearly severely understaffed and deserve better by leadership at Summa. Just avoid this place if you can until its fixed, good lord.

This place has consistently been decent for me. The only issue I have had is they get very busy, to no fault of their own. This causes care to take a little longer, but they always run tests and keep you updated. They also have nurses come in and check on you every so often. Which is wonderful. This has became the main hospital i choose when I have flare ups, and they are usually always good to me.

Flipping horrible! Dont take your children, your husband your wife, or your great aunt that you hate to this place. You will sit in the waiting room until there finger falls off or theyre dead. Not joking at all. Been here for 4 long excruciatingly painful hours with my boyfriend and not one nurse or doctor has seen us. I asked for a hot compress for him and they were very rude saying we dont have those in the er! What? Then what are you, a band aid station! Insane! Please, if you want your loved one to feel better, do not take them here!

I received exceptional care here today 8 am-2 pm. Went in with excruciating pain, hardly able to walk, and left with good spirits and feeling a bit better. Wait time in the ER took about 20 minutes, maybe no longer. Tests, CT scan, and discharge papers were pretty quick, making everything a lot more bearable for me. Thank you PA K Varian and Dr. McDowell for taking care of me during one of my hardest days.

I had the absolute worst ER experience of my life. I have crohn’s disease and might need surgery, and i have been waiting 7 hours to be seen…so far. it could be another 7 hours before i even get a room. I brought this to the attention of the front desk nurses and they were rude and yelled at me, and the other one started shouting at me, when i used a calm voice. Terrible empathy, service, care, and speed. Just awful.

Arrived at ER at 7 pm on August 10 , 2021 with my son experiencing severe abdominal pain. He has Crohns and was advised by his doctor to appear at the ER as his physician feared a bowel blockage. His pain level has been between 8 and 10.It is now after 3 am on August 11, 2021 and they drew blood and have taken 1 set of vitals!! I have spent a great deal of time in hospitals as all three of my children have Crohns Disease and this is by far the worst ER experience of my life. There’s no communication and with the exception of one lab tech the staff has been indifferent, callous and rude. They mentioned a CT scan 7 hours ago and no action since. I would never recommend anyone voluntarily subject themselves to this facility.

Its unfortunate how almost everyone I came in contact with on this particular day lacked bedside manners and empathy. Not one person was compassionate, except for one woman. I wish I knew her name. I do suffer from crippling generalized anxiety and on this day I needed help with a few things to ease my mind. They did run tests as asked but thats it. I wasnt even assigned a doctor. Though I was in obvious distress, thank God I wasnt then or now suicidal; otherwise the lack of concern or compassion shown/given to me on this day from the staff wouldve made the choice that much easier to go through with. Those with anxiety who may not know how to cope, Its okay. Itll get better. Just dont come to this emergency room if you need any relief for such dark moments.

Wow, for all of the remodeling on the exterior, the interior of the emergency department is kind of a scary place. Was here tonight with my elderly mom for about 5 hours, she had chest pain similar to a heart attack. We waited about 5 hours before they admitted her for some further cardiac testing in the morning. The main things I noticed were that the waiting area is much smaller than it used to be way back in the day. Back in the day, you had ambient lighting, comfortable furniture, space & privacy to wait with your family. A Cozy atmosphere. Tables with magazines & TVs around, etc. Everything now looks very old/dated/harsh/cold/clinical/dirty/disorganized. Cramped. Not enough seats to hold everyone & the seats were very uncomfortable. This place reminded me of being in a combination of the DMV, mixed with the main polling station at Wolf Ledges on Election Day, mixed with the old Greyhound bus station that used to be over on wolf ledges, mixed with the old Barberton free clinic they had waaay back in the day. Almost how waiting around in hell might feel. We moved ourselves over by the vending machines so we wouldn’t have to watch/listen to this very ill man vomiting into a bag. The vending machines look to be about 30 years old & hum loudly like an industrial air conditioner. Everyone would get angry because they’d try the drink machine & nothing would come out, but it would charge you $. The machines were so loud that we couldn’t hear our name being called. There were some helpful people behind the front desk, except for a young blonde girl who I witnessed being mean to the patients. One old man pt walked up & asked her for a drink of h20 & she said no!? “We don’t have any cups or any water.” Another girl chimed in that she would get him water, luckily. But the blonde one seemed to be cruel & rude to people. She belongs in a concentration camp & not a hospital emergency room because it’s not FUNNY or cute to refuse water to an old sick man. Once we got placed in a room in back, things were much more normal. The nursing staff were super considerate & helpful & the doctors were knowledgeable & moved fast to get things done. It was mainly the waiting area that was super disturbing & in need of a major overhaul. We rarely visit the ER but I think in the future we will not be returning here bc of the main entrance experience. We will probably go to AGMC instead.

This is horrible. Don’t get me wrong, we know times are tough right now. I am fully aware and thankful for the sacrifices and risks these healthcare workers are pushing through. The way we’ve been treated by this facility however is unacceptable. Over 5 hours ago I had to drop my grandma off, I wasn’t allowed in which is alright, but since then we’ve called so many times, and been put on hold, disconnected, told we would get a call back, and here we are 5 hours later knowing absolutely nothing. Is she getting released tonight, admitted to a hospital, did they run any tests? We don’t know. It’s a hard time but the least they could do is let a family members know what is going on. I will be interested in seeing If summa is willing to acknowledge this review, all I can say is that I feel terrible for my family and any other family that has to deal with this place.

I took my husband to the emergency Room Wednesday night June 24th. We were there from 8:00 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. The emergency Rome Was unclean actually it was filthy. It was not full but people were coming and going. No one ever cleaned the chairs the door handles in the ER waiting Room or in the bathrooms. There was a young lady vomiting in an emesis bag. When my husband was called back to a room in the ER at 1:00 a.m. the emesis bag was on the floor. After he was seen and we were leaving at 3:30 a.m. the emesis bag was still on the floor. I was appalled and shocked that this hospital does not disinfect per CDC and state guidelines for COVID19. I will never return to Akron city hospital. It is clear they have no concern for their patients and actually was breaking some kind of state mandate. It was deplorable!!!!!

He insisted that my pain wasn’t real and had me tested for strep throat-a test that took an hour and a half to be done (not the realist, just to have the test done) No clue as to what’s wrong with me, and I feel no better than I did coming in. Youre going to wait around for a long time, like at least 3 hours, before youre sent back. Theyre understaffed and though everyone I interacted with (like seven different nurses, two doctors, one resident) was very nice and tried their best to help, a lot of them were clearly overworked and stretched thin. If they dont immediately know whats wrong with you, they dont have anyone available that can spend time to figure it out, so theyll test you for everything and rack your bill up. Better to drive a bit further for a different ER than any in Akron.

I have gone to Akron City Hospital ever since I was 15yrs old and Ill be 40 next yr.I used to swear by this Hospital, I even chose to give birth to all 3 of my children there. Now I wouldnt even step foot on the property to save my own life. The doctors there botched my emergency hip surgery from a motorcycle accident 5yrs ago. Taking away 1 1/2 inches in height from my left leg. Then in April of this yr, because of the difference in height w/ both legs and the constant strain it caused, I shattered my femur from right below where my metal hardware stops (about 5/6 inches above my knee cap) to below my knee (about 2/3 inches). When I went to the emergency room ( which was purely out of habit) they were extremely rude and disrespectful. Not one single staff member knew their heads from a whole in the ground. When I mentioned something to one of the Dr.s about how Ive heard rumors on how the hospital has gone completely down hill within the last few yrs. I also told him how I agreed with all the rumors and that I couldnt figure out if it was the whole hospital in general or just the staff that was the cause of everything. He then got extremely rude, again, and made some snide comment. Mind you I arrived in the ambulance around 10:30-11:00 am and wasnt released til 12:00-12:30am. I couldnt even tell you how many different Dr.s, Interns, and Nurses that came in and out of my room trying to figure out and decide what needed to be done about my shattered femur. They finally decided around 6:00-6:30pm to put me under a local anesthetic to put my whole entire leg in a botched up cast. My cast was so tight around my ankle, that I couldnt even to feel my toes. It went all the way up to below my butt cheek, making it almost impossible to use the toilet. The top half of the cast was so loose that I could put my arm (from finger tips to elbow) inside the top of my cast to where I could put my hand around and below my knee cap. It defeated the whole purpose of securing my shattered femur (knee).

Went here because I lost hearing temporarily in my right ear. I wanted to make sure that nothing was wrong with my ear. The ER doctor looked in my ear, said there was a build-up of wax in my ear, but the eardrum appeared to be OK and then proceeded to flush my ear with a syringe. No wax ended up being removed from my ear. He moved the syringe too far and I felt a sharp temporary pain. Before the the doctor (or ER tech, whatever he was) attempted to flush my ear, he said he saw the membrane (eardrum) and after feeling that sharp pain, he looked in my ear and said he did not see it anymore. Meaning he most likely ruptured my eardrum. Now I need to go to an ENT to verify whether or not he actually did. The picture is the syringe he used to flush my ear. I know my eardrum was fine prior to the ER visit, because I had previously seen an ENT 2 days prior.Update 8/22/19: Suma Health has reached out to me regarding what happened. I saw my ENT today and he said there was some wax buildup, but it appeared that my eardrum was intact. I am still not happy with the concern the ER Tech/Doctor caused for me. After showing the picture in the review to my ENT he said They should not have been using something like that to flush your ear.

RUDE. RUDE. RUDE. My husband and I came into the ER 12/14/18 at 7am. We were quickly escorted to a room by a small, young blonde women. She ushered us and a very old man with a cane through the doors to a room. She ran ahead of us and then huffed and gave SERIOUS attitude to the old man who wasn’t fast enough for her. HE HAD A CANE. Then when the old man asked how to get to a certain unit, she responded very annoyed and inconvenienced saying “she didn’t have access to the doors down there and he had to go himself and follow the signs”. Um, I’m sorry But who taught these people how to treat your elders!!? Walk that man to where he needs to be!!! Our two nurses and male doctor who waited on us in our room were very friendly! I can’t say the same about the lady who took my husbands xrays in our room. She came in our room #32 around 8:50am and was probably in her 40s/50s with blonde hair. Unfortunately we didn’t get her name. She was VERY aggressive and sooooooooo rude with him, barking orders expecting him to know what she was talking about with positioning his foot for the X-ray. I honestly cannot believe how you can be in health care and be so incredibly rude to your patients. This is a place where people come to feel “safe”.
