I had a great time taking the guitar building class. The instructors were insightful and very helpful. Most days did not require the full 8 hours to accomplish what was set for the day, the course could be more condensed. Overall I found the course very fun and now I have a handmade guitar! I would be interested in taking more courses from the school.

The acoustic guitar building class was an exceptional experience. Learning from a world class Luthier as we constructed high quality Martin guitars was an enriching experience. Gary is an accomplished craftsman and mentor with a calm demeanor that promotes confidence in novice woodworkers like me. Still hard to believe that I could build a guitar in four days, with a week of sanding in between, that actually plays and sounds great. I look forward to enjoying this guitar and the fun of building it, the rest of my life. An added special benefit was taking the class with my son. Great memory! I recommend the class highly. 👍

Had an awesome day. I took the womens empowerment course with Sheri. We had a great group of 6 women. Sheri taught us how to use hand tools, drills and drivers. She taught us how to measure accurately and how to use a square and she taught us how to use a table saw, a band saw and a miter saw. Sheri is a great instructor and an awesome person. She made the class both informative and fun. I cant wait to take another class with her!

I took a week-long Continuous Arm Windsor Chair class at the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute, (SBWI). This was my first experience at the SBWI and I was impressed with the programs SBWI brings to the southern Michigan community of Adrian. There are programs for veterans, youth, and woodworkers of all ages and experience. Luke Barnett is a gifted instructor and an experienced chair maker. He is also the capable visionary who wears many hats leading SBWI. The class was small with three students so there was plenty of personal attention. This would have been true even if COVID had not scared students away as the course was limited to five. I enjoyed riving the wood from a white oak log. Hard work, but there is no substitute for hands-on experience. And the satisfaction of riving the wood from a log that you then fashion into the arm and spindles, wow, very special! Ive taken other Windsor chair courses from other chairmakers, and for the most part, Windsor chairs are made the same. Though the process can be a little different, in the end you have a chair! I appreciated the process Luke taught because it was all very straightforward and, well, easy. When I make another chair, I will keep most of the processes; some things I will do differently. That is all part of the fun of taking courses from different instructors. I count Michigan and Adrian very fortunate to have SBWI within its borders. The school and Luke are a wonderful resource and a gift to the community.

I took the Farmhouse table class recently. I had allot of fun.I am an amateur / weekend woodworker so using the tools in the shop was not an issue for me. If that concerns you, dont let it stop you, Luke takes the time to teach proper use and safety for all the tools. The feeling of pride and accomplishment from building something by hand is unbeatable.Note: You will build the table top, finish it, build the frame and legs, and assemble it all together, but because of lack of time you will not finish the frame and legs (usually paint). Thats homework for latter.Take the class, youll enjoy it!

I previously had made a fixed blade knife. This class was to make a sheath in which to secure and carry it. Pat, the instructor of both classes, is a master of his crafts and of teaching it to a wide variety of persons. Pat had the challenge of introducing us to leather working techniques and using the tools that go with the process, of which there are many. He did a really good job of demonstrating methods and making sure that each participant knew how to do the work with the tools. Pat generously brought his own personal set of woodworking tools to share so that the work didn’t have to wait for an in-use tool to circulate before it came around to you. I found the class a valuable, well constructed, learning experience.

Excellent experience with the table build class. Didnt believe it could be done in two day, but it is true, without taking shortcuts of course.I recommend the farmhouse table build class with Luke Barnett. They have everything needed for the best joinery. Sanding is the most tedious activity of this build, but they have the premium equipment you would never buy for yourself or have access to. I got to process my own hardwood for the table top which was a fun experience. Just completed the two day Intro to Woodturning Class at SBWI in Adrian. This was a very informative and fun class in which we were introduced to the basic concepts of woodturning with emphasis on Safety, Wood selection, Lathe nomenclature and operation, along with helpful instruction and hands on experience in lathe tool sharpening. The small class size (5 students) ensured lots of personal attention from Luke, our instructor. He shared keen insight as to what mattered most in lathe selection, along with many personal anecdotes of his early experiences turning Windsor chair legs and spindles. Most of my fellow students in this class were considering purchasing their first machines, and so found this very helpful. Day 1 we were introduced to spindle turning, we learned the proper use of the tools and practiced proper technique to gain the best results. Each student by the end of the day had gained increased confidence and we each made some handy hard maple mallets!. Day 2 we stepped outside the shop to hand split some hard maple logs and then stepped back inside to learn the basics of bowl turning. This was a really fun project and so encouraging to see such beautiful bowls completed by each student. I would highly recommend this class to anyone wondering if this woodworking skill is for them. I believe they would likely feel the rewarding sense of fulfillment and time well spent in taking this class just as I did! Thanks Luke Barnett and thanks SBWI for a job well done.

Andrew was a good instructor and took the time to make sure that we understood how to use the machines in the shop. The main reason I took the class is to familiarize myself with the band saw, jointer and planer. The part a about how a make a board be square up was helpful. By seeing how each piece of equipment work is going to help determined which one I should buy for my shop. The booklet and the test we took will be a good resource for future projects I do. The one thing that was a concern was the supervision when operating the machines. We worked by ourselves on some machines. A second person a that time I think would be good, because some people had had no experience with these machines. Over all I would give the course for me a five star rating. I would like to take a class on hand planers. I know nothing about them or how to use them. Thank you and I will be looking forward to attending other classes!

My daughter and I attended and had a good time, we learned they offered many different classes. She and I took the knife making class and had a great time. I then signed up for the architectural carving class and that kick started me into pursuing a long desire to learn to carve. I had chisels and gouges that I bought 30 yr ago and never had time to learn, I dusted them off and took the classes over several Sundays. It was very enjoyable and I have continued learning to carve. This last weekend I attended the build a ukulele class, and for me this has been the best one yet. I absolutely really enjoyed the process of building a concert sized ukulele. I am in the process of putting a finish on it now, and did a little carving on the headstock too! I am looking forward to the guitar building class scheduled for January too! I am so glad we found this place and plan to continue taking classes here. Luke and Dena are providing a valuable service to a lot of people wanting to experience diverse creative activities and I hope they continue for many years to come. My only complaint is it is 200 miles from my home so it is a long drive, but well worth it as far as I am concerned.
